Transfer my passport stamp to the new passport, or show both at border?

Featured Replies

I have to renew my visa soon and just received a new passport by mail, totally blank. I also received back my old, stamped passport, and a letter telling immigration to transfer the stamp to the new one.

I don't have a car (making the trip to local immigration a bit more hassle) and would like to just show the border immigration my old and new passport if possible. Is this an option? If so, will it cause extra hassle?

Moved to Thai visa forum. Similar question surfaces there from time to time.

Sound like you have a multi entry visa and intend to do a border run in the near future? ("renew"?)

In this case you can use both passports. The visa remains valid.

But "renew" and "transfer stamp" does sound like an extension of stay.

Please clarify.

I was accepted for my advanced thai course, currently in intermediate. Not sure what that would qualify as.

What do you have in your passport?

One visa obtained abroad or extension obtained at immigration in Thailand?

Sounds as tho' you have an extension of stay obtained from immigration.

Ask at your school or post a scan of your latest immigration stamps here.

Your visa and your re-entry permit are two separate things.

You should get both transferred to your new passport.  Immigration will do this for you with very little hassle, and if I remember correctly at no cost.

If you only get your visa transferred you can get a lot of hassles at the border trying to get back into Thailand even if you have the old passport with the re-entry permit.

Visas are not transferred. If he has a re-entry permit he wouldn't have a valid, unexpired visa.

If he does have a re-entry permit he would have an extension of stay. Immigrations will transfer the extension and re-entry permit to the new passport and make a notation about the original visa he used to enter Thailand.

If he actually still has a valid unexpired, multi-entry visa issued by an embassy or consulate then he should present both the old and new passport when exiting and returning to Thailand. The visa will not be transferred, but they will stamp him in on the new passport.

Since entering Thailand have you gone to an immigration office (or did the school on your behalf) and get an extension of your permission to stay?

If you are here on an extension of stay you can get the extension stamp (and re-entry permit if you have one) transferred to your new passport at your immigration office.

If you mean you will be leaving Thailand to get a new visa (visas are not renewed), then at border hand over both passports when exiting (they will stamp you out in the new passport) and have the new visa put in your new passport at the embassy/consulate and use that when you re=enter the country.

Quite possibly they will write a short note (in Thai) in your new passport detailing your old passport number (if it changed) and details of your previous stay.

I just asked immigration (Jomtien Pattaya) to transfer the stamps to my new passport. Told me to come back the following day, no charge and an excellent service.

Back in 2009, I had a multi non o obtained in October. Stamped in till jan 2010. Received new passport December 2009. Immigration put three stamps in my passport with visa number, expiry date and admitted to. Left country as normal every 90 days with just new passpirt.

  • 2 weeks later...

Go yesterday to SAMUI immigration to make the transfer from my old passport to the new one i just received.
Prepares copy of old pages first, fullfilled a form, gave the package to the "nice" lady who the ask me in french :

Her : cinq cent,
Me : Sorry ?

Her : cinq cent.
Me : Sorry, i really dont know what you are saying.

Her : five hundreds bahts
Me ; ohhhhhh, ok, i thought it was free !

Her : No.
Pay and come back in 3 hours and gave me ticket number "555"
I get it 2 hours later, after going to lunch in Bophut.

SAMUI IMM is allways full of surprise, when they cannot charge you in one place they find another one.

So for those who are gonna say, you should not have pay, you should have do this and that, dont need to waist your time, i have to go there again next month to renew my 1 year extension and i dont want to have any problems with them.
