BANGKOK, 11 August 2017 (NNT) - The Ministry of Transport and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) have decided to expand the single-track Saphan Taksin station to a double track.

Transport Minister Arkhom Termphitthayaphaisit disclosed that the Department of Rural Roads will transform the single lane on Taksin Bridge into a dual lane and expand the platform of Saphan Taksin station. Saphan Taksin station will remain at the same place.

Scheduled to commence from 1 September 2017 onwards, the entire construction process is expected to take 27 months. It requires a budget of about one billion baht 1,000 million and it is expected to be completed in 2019.

Saphan Taksin station, currently capable of servicing 800,000 BTS passengers each day, will continue to operate while undergoing renovations. Passengers' waiting time at the station will be further reduced once constructions are complete.

This was always the most practical solution.

Just more costly in the short run but the idea of a single track on a dual track line seemed impractical.

The bridge was built 2 lane anyway.

The stupid people just put a single lane station in when the train terminated there to save money & get it open quickly.

A Thaksin idea like opening Suvarnabhumi 6 months before it was ready

I think will need a 2 storey line & station now. Don't recall enough room om the sides but could be wrong

Saphan Thaksin Station was not capable of accommodating the 800,000 passengers per day stated in this press release. The reporter is confused with the whole BTS system which currently peaks at 800,000 passengers/day. Saphan Thaksin was originally the end of the line with much lower passenger numbers but now that the line has been extended and will be extended further, the station must be rebuilt to accommodate dual tracks and more passengers and alleviate the overcrowding from Siam Station on the Silom line.
