August 16, 20178 yr Fares on new trains set to rise 20% from August 21st Picture: Thai Rath BANGKOK: -- Fares on the State Railway's four new rolling stock routes out of Bangkok are set to rise by around 15 to 20% from next week. The fares relate to the first and second class carriages on the 115 trains to Chiang Mai, Nong Khai, Ubon and Hat Yai from the capital. The increases will add about 100 to 200 baht depending on the route and the class. The State Railways told Thai Rath that the new trains were being well used since their introduction last November. Capacity was between 75 and 80% compared to around 70% on other services. The trains feature such more modern features as LCD screens and self cleaning toilets sealed against insects. August 16, 20178 yr Hmm, the overnight sleep trains are pretty good.... but they were already slightly more expensive than early booked flights. I never saw LCD screens though? Do they talk about something else? Otherwise you are going to pay 30% more for 13 hours vs 1 hour journey.
August 16, 20178 yr The new trains are pretty good. Took one to nong khai recently. However, the food is now prepackaged junk worse than 7/11 and no alcohol. I am guessing it's like this to keep the cabins clean.
August 17, 20178 yr i found the new trains to be very nice, with meat locker air conditioning and improved sound insulation from external sound and a smoother ride... but now they play videos on LCD screens with the audio blasting out... repeating the same thing over and over for hours. so if you are going to ride the new trains bring a hoodie or sweat shirt and ear plugs.
