BANGKOK: -- Two teenagers have been fined Bt1,000 each for riding a motorcycle on an expressway, police said.

The two were caught on video riding their bike on the Bang Klo-Chaeng Wattana elevated expressway without wearing helmets. They were seen smiling at the camera.

The clip was posted on Facebook on Tuesday afternoon. Within about 22 hours, it had received more than 331,000 views.

Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Pol Maj-General Jiraphat Phumichit said on Wednesday that police had managed to trace the two young men, who were taken to the expressway police station to face fines for not wearing helmets and violating the ban on motorcycles on expressways.

Jiraphat quoted the two as saying they had accidentally entered the expressway while they were riding on a frontage road on Soi Sukhumvit 62.

Jiraphat said police had been assigned to work with expressway officials to locate areas that motorcyclists might use to sneak onto the expressway.

It is good the police actually caught the driver and made him pay a fine..

What i can not understand is what law did the passenger break to be made to pay a fine also?

Or was he made to pay to up the ante on the police collection plate?

Since when is a passenger made responsible for a drivers actions?

Wouldn't have to spend the money to put up barriers if they spent a little effort on enforcement.  Back home, they put up a $50 sign to say "No scooters on this road", and it's rare to see one.  Here, they build an entire string of  dodgy $5,000-20,000 barriers, and there's still scooters on the road.

Great to see they caught one, but this wouldn't be news if they were actually doing their jobs.  They'd be catching them by the dozens- at least until word got out that the odds of getting caught exceed the time saved by breaking the rules.

I'm always amazed that they don't harvest the revenue source of traffic violators instead of spending big bucks building barriers in a game of whack-a-mole.
