BANGKOK: -- YELLOW-SHIRT LEADER Sondhi Limthongkul, who is serving a jail term for forgery, is blind in his left eye as the cataract he has suffered for a long time has become worse since he was jailed, said his son Jittanart yesterday.

Sondhi, 71, was sentenced to 20 years in prison after a court found him guilty of forgery relating to a bank loan deal in September last year.

“My father has been suffering from cataract in his left eye for a long time before he was sentenced to the jail term. The condition has worsened because of the conditions in the prison. Now the cataract has caused him [to lose the sight of] his left eye, he can no longer see,” said Jittanart.

Jittanart said that his father’s health is poor partly because there is a bullet fragment left in his skull from an attack in 2009.

“My father has suffered from severe headaches as a result of the presence of a bullet fragment in his skull. Doctors can’t give him an MRI examination because the fragment is metal. The only way to remove it is an operation,” he said.

He said his father collapsed once because the shrapnel moved from its original position. Any treatment on Sondhi will have to follow Corrections Department regulations.

Sondhi, Thai media mogul and founder of Manager daily newspaper and ASTV satellite broadcaster, was a core leader of People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) that was involved in a series of political crises in Thailand.

He was once a supporter of former PM Thaksin Shinawatra but turned to be leader of the anti-Thaksin movement or PAD.

In April, 2009, gunmen in a pickup truck ambushed Sondhi's car at a petrol station in the Samsen area and fired M-16 and AK-47 assault rifle rounds at the car. The attackers escaped when Sondhi's followers in another car opened fire on them.

Sondhi suffered a serious head wound and underwent emergency surgery in hospital. He survived the surgery, which involved removing several bullet fragments from his skull.

Despite the jail conditions, Sondhi has a strong and good spirit and will continue using his experience and knowledge to teach other inmates, Jittanart said.

Thaksin, Yingluck, Sondhi, their greed caught up with them in the end. He should have been jailed for the airport takeover anyway.

Ah, the see no evil publisher and takeover artist is now blind in one eye. One more to go! :wai:

Quite obvious you have no idea at all what it means to loose the light in your eye or eyes.

Shame on you.

Glad he has a headache because that's exactly what this pr!ck gave me in 1989 in a publishing deal that he poked his nose into. What a glorified a$$h0le he is sitting on his throne-like chair promoting his power at the time.  I say "rot in hell Sondhi, you are in your rightful place you deviate. Now where are all your supporters? MM will not be able to save you and what goes around comes around.

Pardon me. Shame on Sondhi. YOU have no idea the trouble this man has inflicted on so many people. I for one was one of them. Let him be blind in both eyes and lose his mind too.

Missing word

My Dog is blind in one eye and has no problem seeing, so this corrupt politician will have no problem doing his time with one good eye!

I am not not sure he was ever a politician.

In my opinion one of the forerunners for all the problems over the last 10 years. I was a victim of the airport takeovers and remember the climate very well at the time The Government House takeover and all the armaments found there after the yellows were removed. Peaceful my @rse.

He turned bandit on Thaksin after the latter refused to lend him money and used the political climate to oust his now enemy.

good for him, hope the junta gets more criminals before they leave, seems like sorayuth is the next high profile figure to be jailed

Nothing that a cataract operation can't fix....

I think he wished a long time that the assault would have killed him.
A "short pain".

Why was he allowed to have armed followers acting as bodyguards?

That should put an end to his forgery antics...

He knows as much about cataracts as he does about honesty. Cataracts form and progress regardless of ones living conditions. The only situation that will affect the outcome is if the person can afford and has access to an ophthalmologist, who can remove the cataract...Which happens to be a quite simple procedure these days. Let him get the surgery and be able to see the four walls around him. Perhaps his mind will clear up as does his vision.

isn't karma great . .. no sympathy from me as you cost me my business when you shutdown the airport..

Say anything you want about the befallen Songhi, the 20 years for forgery was outrageous just like Boonsong ridiculous 42 years. It is all about political injustice and the legal justice has largely been ignored. People like Suthep legal wrongdoings are compensated by his political deeds to the establishment.

Is he broke ?If so surely his supporters can cough up the money for a Cataract operation.?
