KORAT: -- About 300 inmates of Nakhon Ratchasima Central Prison, both male and female, have been diagnosed with tuberculosis, a senior public health official said on Wednesday.

Dr Thirawat Walaisathien, director of the Ninth Disease Control Office based in the northeastern province, said 3,000 inmates had had their lungs X-rayed after several cases of tuberculosis turned up.

About 300 were found to have abnormalities in their lungs indicating they’d contracted TB. They have been isolated in separate zones and are being treated, Thirawat said.

The physician believed the respiratory disease spread through the prison after being brought in by newly arriving inmates.

He said inmates of other prisons under his office’s jurisdiction would all be checked for TB.

Central Prison inmates were also found suffering from diabetes as well as stress, hypertension and similar ailments, Thirawat said.

This doesn't surprise me in the least and I do not buy for one minute the claim that new inmates brought it in. I visit several prisons every month and all of them are full of inmates with TB and a host of other nasty diseases and infections. When you cram people in like sardines, any infection that one has, spreads like wildfire. Medical care, while improving slightly, is still an absolute disgrace, with countless numbers unnecessarily dying every week.

While I love my dog to bits, I have often said I would shoot him out of mercy rather than let him try to live inside these pestilent places. Thai prisons are a disgrace and no amount of lies and excuses will change that.

If you spread opinions via the web the junta dislikes, you go to jail. When you are released and spread all kinds of diseases you caught in prison, to the family or an entire village nobody cares. But call this glorious nation with underpaid, and non-contracted nurses and 1.600 well paid generals a Banana Republic, you are a Thai basher.

Thailand has more Generals than China & USA combined!

I'm sorry I have posted this before by Nelson Mandela:

It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones.”

...because every jealous nation in the neighborhood has plans to invade the prospering, rich, educated, morally stable, 4.0 hub of everything and free the population from military rule.
