Chief Rabbi Warns ‘Visibly Jewish’ People Not Safe in Britain

Britain’s chief rabbi has warned that people who appear visibly Jewish are no longer safe in the country, after two men were stabbed in a north London neighbourhood that has seen several recent antisemitic incidents.

Get today's headlines by email image.png

Ephraim Mirvis said the attack had intensified fears among Britain’s Jewish community. Speaking to the BBC, he said the incident demonstrated that those who can be identified as Jewish in public are increasingly at risk.

“I’m sad to say that today’s event proves that if you are visibly Jewish, you’re not safe, and far more needs to be done,” he said.

He added that many people had been asking themselves where the next attack might occur.

Stabbings in north London

Police said the attack happened on Wednesday morning in the London neighbourhood of Golders Green, an area with a large Jewish population. Officers are treating the stabbings as a terrorist incident.

One of the victims was attacked at a bus stop while putting on a kippah, a traditional Jewish skullcap. The second was stabbed while walking along the street.

Both men were taken to hospital and are reported to be in stable condition. Police arrested a 45-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder.

Authorities later confirmed the suspect had previously been referred to the government’s Prevent programme, which is designed to identify people at risk of becoming involved in extremism.

Threat level raised

Following the attack, the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre raised Britain’s terrorism threat level to “severe” from “substantial”. The level, the second-highest on the UK scale, means an attack is considered highly likely within the next six months.

The centre operates within MI5.

Head of counter-terrorism policing Laurence Taylor said Britain had been facing a growing terrorist threat for some time.

He said both Islamist and extreme right-wing extremism were contributing to the risk and warned that Jewish and Israeli individuals and institutions in the UK were facing an elevated threat.

Series of antisemitic incidents

The stabbings follow a series of antisemitic incidents in London’s Jewish community in recent weeks.

Last month, arsonists set fire to four ambulances belonging to a Jewish charity in Golders Green. A synagogue in the area was also attacked two weeks earlier.

The rise in incidents has prompted warnings from senior officials. Government terrorism adviser Jonathan Hall described the situation as the most serious national security concern the country has faced since a wave of attacks in 2017, including the bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester that killed 35 people.

He told the BBC that many Jewish residents, particularly in London, now fear they cannot live normally because of repeated attacks.

Government response

The UK government said it was treating the recent incidents with urgency. Interior minister Shabana Mahmood described the attacks as an emergency, though she stopped short of calling the situation a national emergency.

Police are also investigating claims of responsibility made by a group said to be backed by Iran, though officials said it was not yet clear whether those claims were credible.

The government announced an additional £25 million in funding to strengthen security for Jewish communities, including synagogues, schools and community centres. The funding comes on top of £33 million already pledged earlier this year.

Prime minister Keir Starmer said the attacks had left many Jewish people afraid to openly practise their religion or reveal their identity at work, school or university.

He said policing would be increased in affected areas and pledged faster legal action in antisemitism cases. Starmer also warned that Britain must strengthen its ability to counter hostile actions from states such as Iran.

Despite the measures, anger remains within parts of London’s Jewish community. Protesters gathered during Starmer’s visit to the area, calling for stronger protection.

Some commentators have argued the government should consider measures similar to those taken in France after the 2015 Charlie Hebdo attack, when thousands of soldiers were deployed to guard Jewish sites.

Sadly, it’s not only Jews in the UK.

Around the world, minority communities of all kinds are experiencing higher levels of hostility.

A lot of this traces back to how certain people now in government and their supporters have normalised aggressive rhetoric.

When so-called leaders promote division or treat minorities as convenient targets, it creates an atmosphere where prejudice becomes easier to express everywhere.

The result is that many groups are finding themselves less safe, less accepted, and more frequently singled out.

Which minorities in the West?

I don't think it's just minorities. I think it's the result of allowing unfettered immigration by groups that don't understand, much less adhere to social norms that have historically made the West a nice place to live.

Kiss that goodbye.

An apt time to bring up this book:

In the video before it was brought up that when people march against racism they aren't including hatred against Jews as part of the racism they oppose.

That is so true.

People who are not visibly Jewish living in Israel or neighbouring countries are regularly targeted by the Zionist Israeli government. Just ask the people of Gaza, Palestine and Lebanon, for example.

And if you are living in the USA, if you are not white, Trump's Nazi storm-troopers, aka ICE, are hunting you.

Do you mean the Jews should remigrate to their promised land?

Took this rabbi a long time to realize this. Same applies in many other western countries. All preplanned by the leaders of one specific group. Eventually they will form their own political party and anyone who doesn't believe in Islam will be targets then. Incompetent immigration officials for ages.

Surely, there are some Palestinian refugees in England that can offer them some protection.

Nope. I think that the fact that a few of the recent victims have been Jews is incidental to the bigger picture.

For example, did you notice that the most recent stabbing attack (on the 2 Jews) was perpetrated by a Somali immigrant? Because the MSM is sure loathe to report that tidbit...

I see the Jews wish to have special treatment again and set their group up as being more important than anyone else's. The same theme seems to have been running for millennia.

What we have to do is stop allowing any nutter into the UK unvetted, the nutters who are mainly muslim and are attacking the Jews.

Our free housing, free hotels by the sea are attracting all the wrong types of people.

The same people are raping young white girls, killing non Jews as well as Jews but there is no outcry for that group as they do not control the media as the Jews do in many cases.

Cases regarding women and girls have been well documented in the news over the last few years yet no outcry, this is not an opinion it is documented fact.

But now they are killing Jews it is now seen as a national tragedy.

I am not against immigration as many make great doctors in the national health system but we can not just have an open door policy.

That hopefully will change at the next general election in 2029 when the two main parties who have messed up the country will be voted out.

A pity you edited your post. I was in agreement previously, but your edit makes it a bigoted post. It's not immigration that's the issue, it's the targeting of minorities that's the issue.

And as usual...

Was it Fox News or the NYPost telling you that MSM did not report it, or did you make that up by yourself? 🤣🤣🤣

In an update Wednesday night, police said the suspect “is a British national, born in Somalia.” He was initially taken to a hospital but was later discharged and is now in custody at a London police station, they said.

https://edition.cnn.com/2026/04/29/uk/north-london-stabbing-jewish-community-intl

The BBC understands the suspect is a 45-year-old Somali-born British man, Essa Suleiman. Shloime Rand, 34, and Moshe Shine, 76, are in a stable condition in hospital.

Shock and anger in Jewish community in Golders Green

There is a fundamental difference between migrants and asylum seekers.

Sure, not everyone should come. Therefore a stringent selection is necessary in a most short time. Those who are not accepted have to leave.

So far everybody would agree.

Now the pinching obstacle.

Those who should leave have to be accepted by their home countries. If this will not happen.....what to do? You want to kill them???

The reason for having so many foreign unwanted people in the UK is now much clearer, I hope.

Exceptionally good post.

Well balanced and spot-on.

However, I would disagree with your last statement about the next election.

The UK - like the USA - has long past the point where any positive change is possible until the Augean Stables have been flushed out.

The power brokers have been exposed. Now they have to be eliminated.

I believe that this concept is known as blowback and when the Jewish Nation becomes a terrorist state it has to be assumed that there are going to be consequences for Jews throughout the world.

I'm not saying it's right, and I certainly don't condone it on any level. I despise racism and religious hatred, but Israel is dispensing a lot of it these days and it seems to be coming back to haunt both Israel and Jews around the world. Israel is most certainly giving Jews a bad name.

If racist stabbed a few Black people for the sole reason they were Black it would have received similar amount of publicity

There are and there have been consequences for Muslims around the world for decades now, as they are despised by many communities. Despite the fact that the vast majority do not support terrorism.

I wonder if you did a polls of Jews around the world how many Jews would be supportive of Israel's extremist behavior?

The rapidly deteriorating racial, ethnic, and religious relations in the US and many countries in Europe, the blame for which lies squarely at Trump's and Netanyahu's feet, I believe likely also played a role in the most recent attempted assassination of Donald Trump.

The shooter was biracial and was likely highly sensitized to the deteriorating racial and social climate in the US. His sense of well-being was likely highly dependent on being able to function in and bridge inter-racial divides.

Posters who argue that these tensions and resulting incidents can be eliminated by more restrictive immigration policies ignore the reality that perceived injustices can be avenged anywhere in the world, as these scattershot incidents in Europe appear to confirm. The goal should be to eliminate injustice not to eliminate immigration.

I have Nick on ignore, so didn't know he wrote this. He seems to be forgetting the claim from Israel, being the homeland of the Jews.
