Netanyahu's White House Visit Fuels Fears of US War Disaster

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to meet President Donald Trump on Tuesday morning, the first in-person meeting between the two leaders since the United States and Israel attacked Iran in February.

The meeting comes as some figures within the Republican Party’s “America First” wing worry Netanyahu will press Trump for a more aggressive approach, after months of heightened tension between the allies over Israel’s military actions in Lebanon and the direction of the US-Iran conflict.

White House Meeting after Months of Strain

Netanyahu is in Washington to attend the funeral of the late Senator Lindsey Graham. The White House had not publicly confirmed the meeting until Monday, with the details finalised only as officials prepared for the service.

The visit follows what critics describe as frequent contact: Netanyahu has made seven trips to Washington since Trump took office last year, and America First-aligned figures say the relationship has become a political liability for the president’s anti-interventionist supporters.

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon said Trump’s “non-Israel First” backers were alarmed, arguing that Netanyahu’s visits to the White House have repeatedly been harmful to their agenda. He cited the scale of Netanyahu’s access to the president as a reason for concern.

Ceasefire Talks, But Escalation Fears

The planned talks come during a fragile period in the wider conflict. US and Iran suspended nearly two weeks of tit-for-tat strikes over the weekend amid hopes for a new ceasefire deal. However, Trump has continued to threaten “massive attacks” if diplomacy does not succeed, after an earlier peace agreement collapsed earlier this month.

Some anti-interventionist Republicans had hoped the most recent ceasefire effort would become a lasting end to hostilities. Instead, they are now weighing the possibility that Netanyahu could persuade Trump to move towards a more enduring phase of war, potentially keeping the United States entangled in the Middle East for months.

New polling cited in the article suggests a growing share of Trump’s base is no longer convinced the war is worth its economic cost. Republicans also face the prospect that the conflict will remain a campaign issue as voters head to the polls in November.

Curt Mills, executive director of the American Conservative magazine, characterised the meeting as a risk of escalation, saying Netanyahu would argue for the “logic of escalation” unless Trump both gives a memorandum of understanding a chance and remains willing to step away from the conflict without a clear resolution.

Discussions Cover Iran and Regional Agreements

Ahead of the meeting, a White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the leaders will discuss the Iran conflict as well as the trilateral agreement involving the United States, Israel and Lebanon. The official also said they will cover plans to expand the Abraham Accords, the set of deals supporting diplomatic normalisation between Israel and several Arab countries.

While critics fear Netanyahu could be pushing Trump toward further military action, some advisers and former officials said the president is unlikely to be directed by Netanyahu. Alex Gray, who previously served as chief of staff at the National Security Council during Trump’s first term, said Netanyahu would likely promote his preferred approach to addressing Iran’s nuclear capabilities, but added that Trump would still be guided by what he considers America’s interests.

In the background, US-Iran strikes remain paused. Trump said on Monday that the United States would resume action if the latest diplomatic effort fails.

Political Risks for Both Leaders

Netanyahu’s aides and supporters have argued the relationship is aimed at preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Matt Brooks, chief executive of the Republican Jewish Coalition, said there is “zero daylight” between the two leaders on that objective, while acknowledging the political costs of maintaining pressure.

Senator Mike Rounds said the meeting was beneficial because it was “better than having them not talking”.

The Israeli prime minister faces electoral pressure ahead of October’s vote, and US special representative for Iran Elliott Abrams said Netanyahu needs the meeting to understand Trump’s next steps, whether that means returning to the memorandum of understanding or moving towards escalation.

Abrams also warned that the stakes are higher for Netanyahu because Trump is the decision-maker and because Netanyahu’s political fate depends on whether the war’s direction is seen to be serving Israel. He added that multiple difficult topics are expected to be discussed, including Lebanon, Syria and Gaza.

Lol. History not your forte, is it? Canaanites, Natufians, Philistines all predated the Jews and were there before them.

You're clueless.

Modern Jews aren't claiming to descend only from one ancient tribe, either.

Genetic and archaeological evidence shows substantial continuity between ancient Levantine populations, including the Canaanites, and later groups such as the Israelites.

If you're going to lecture people about history, at least get the timeline right.

That's rather debatable if you look at the Proms or an England football match. Britain just doesn't have the means anymore. But the response to the Falklands nonsense by Argentina seems to suggest that the British empire mentality is alive and kicking. Britain is still occupying the Falklands, which it defended with violence in the 80s, Gibraltar, and many, many other territories around the world are still occupied by Britain. If it had the means, Britain would no doubt be as violent as it was not so long ago. It just can't be.

Here we go,

It's coming out now, a British hater, go away silly man.

You hardly need brainwashing when you can see you live in a land stolen by an occupying, vicious, criminal army, the IDF, that treats you like an Apartheid class. Yes, their minds are poisoned against Israel, but because of the actions of Israel and Israelis. Israel reaped what it sowed. If I were a Palestinian kid, which thankfully I'm not, I too would be carrying a gun looking for Israelis. The Israelis stole their land. They started it.

Get back to cuckooland, you can't debate, you're not intelligent enough.

Bye, bye.

The Philistines don't support your argument.

They arrived in the southern Levant around the 12th century BC, probably from the Aegean, at roughly the same time the Israelites were emerging.

They certainly weren't an indigenous population that "predated the Jews" in the way you're implying.

😂OK Mr clueless! 😂

We were talking about whether war crimes were committed , the above is a different ruling .

The above doesn't show Israel committed war crimes .

Israel didn't get found to be guilty in that trial .

You are mixing up two different Court cases

I am afraid you are misinformed. Proceedings are still ongoing.

International courts have taken monumental actions regarding alleged war crimes by Israel, operating through two separate international tribunals in The Hague.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued formal arrest warrants for top leaders, while the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is currently trying a case regarding allegations of genocide.

Pre-Trial Chamber I officially ruled that there are "reasonable grounds to believe" that war crimes and crimes against humanity were committed.

The ICC issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

The court cited criminal responsibility for the war crimes of using starvation as a method of warfare and intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population. It also included crimes against humanity such as murder and persecution.

Current Status: Because Israel is not a member of the Rome Statute, it rejects the court's jurisdiction. However, all 125 ICC member states are legally obligated to arrest Netanyahu and Gallant if they enter their territories.

On a separate note - The ICJ case.

The Ruling: In the ongoing case brought by South Africa accusing Israel of violating the 1948 Genocide Convention, the ICJ did not issue a final definitive verdict on whether genocide has occurred. However, it ruled that South Africa’s claims that Palestinians face a plausible risk of genocide are valid.

The court issued several binding "provisional measures" ordering Israel to take all actions within its power to prevent acts of genocide, allow unhindered humanitarian aid into Gaza, and halt specific military offensives, such as the one in Rafah.

Current Status: A final, definitive ruling by the ICJ on whether Israel legally breached the Genocide Convention is a lengthy judicial process and is expected to take until roughly 2028.

I don't hate the British at all. In fact I felt a bit bad for them that they didn't make it to the World Cup final, losing, of all teams, against the criminal Argentinians. Which must have made it even worse. I was of course rooting for England. See, I have the ability to distinguish between who commits acts of criminal barbarism and everyone else. Hence I have no problem to be friends with Brits, American Jews, Spaniards, Frenchmen, Belgians, Thais and Russians. You, however, want to use these acts of barbaric cruelty, which are found in every nation's history, as a reason to fuel hatred of ALL Muslims, no less, which is kind of sick in the head. Pure incitement to hatred, that list of Nigerian and other crimes you published. Really quite despicable.

There has never been an actual criminal trial of Israel for war crimes by an international tribunal, though active legal proceedings and investigations exist at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) handles disputes between states rather than individual criminal trials. It is currently adjudicating a landmark case brought by South Africa (South Africa v. Israel).

The case is still in its preliminary, written pleading stages. The ICJ extended deadlines for legal submissions, granting Israel until March 2026 to file its Counter-Memorial, followed by a deadline of November 2027 for South Africa to file its reply. A final judgment on the merits of the case is not expected until 2028 or later.
