Netanyahu's White House Visit Fuels Fears of US War Disaster

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to meet President Donald Trump on Tuesday morning, the first in-person meeting between the two leaders since the United States and Israel attacked Iran in February.

The meeting comes as some figures within the Republican Party’s “America First” wing worry Netanyahu will press Trump for a more aggressive approach, after months of heightened tension between the allies over Israel’s military actions in Lebanon and the direction of the US-Iran conflict.

White House Meeting after Months of Strain

Netanyahu is in Washington to attend the funeral of the late Senator Lindsey Graham. The White House had not publicly confirmed the meeting until Monday, with the details finalised only as officials prepared for the service.

The visit follows what critics describe as frequent contact: Netanyahu has made seven trips to Washington since Trump took office last year, and America First-aligned figures say the relationship has become a political liability for the president’s anti-interventionist supporters.

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon said Trump’s “non-Israel First” backers were alarmed, arguing that Netanyahu’s visits to the White House have repeatedly been harmful to their agenda. He cited the scale of Netanyahu’s access to the president as a reason for concern.

Ceasefire Talks, But Escalation Fears

The planned talks come during a fragile period in the wider conflict. US and Iran suspended nearly two weeks of tit-for-tat strikes over the weekend amid hopes for a new ceasefire deal. However, Trump has continued to threaten “massive attacks” if diplomacy does not succeed, after an earlier peace agreement collapsed earlier this month.

Some anti-interventionist Republicans had hoped the most recent ceasefire effort would become a lasting end to hostilities. Instead, they are now weighing the possibility that Netanyahu could persuade Trump to move towards a more enduring phase of war, potentially keeping the United States entangled in the Middle East for months.

New polling cited in the article suggests a growing share of Trump’s base is no longer convinced the war is worth its economic cost. Republicans also face the prospect that the conflict will remain a campaign issue as voters head to the polls in November.

Curt Mills, executive director of the American Conservative magazine, characterised the meeting as a risk of escalation, saying Netanyahu would argue for the “logic of escalation” unless Trump both gives a memorandum of understanding a chance and remains willing to step away from the conflict without a clear resolution.

Discussions Cover Iran and Regional Agreements

Ahead of the meeting, a White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the leaders will discuss the Iran conflict as well as the trilateral agreement involving the United States, Israel and Lebanon. The official also said they will cover plans to expand the Abraham Accords, the set of deals supporting diplomatic normalisation between Israel and several Arab countries.

While critics fear Netanyahu could be pushing Trump toward further military action, some advisers and former officials said the president is unlikely to be directed by Netanyahu. Alex Gray, who previously served as chief of staff at the National Security Council during Trump’s first term, said Netanyahu would likely promote his preferred approach to addressing Iran’s nuclear capabilities, but added that Trump would still be guided by what he considers America’s interests.

In the background, US-Iran strikes remain paused. Trump said on Monday that the United States would resume action if the latest diplomatic effort fails.

Political Risks for Both Leaders

Netanyahu’s aides and supporters have argued the relationship is aimed at preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Matt Brooks, chief executive of the Republican Jewish Coalition, said there is “zero daylight” between the two leaders on that objective, while acknowledging the political costs of maintaining pressure.

Senator Mike Rounds said the meeting was beneficial because it was “better than having them not talking”.

The Israeli prime minister faces electoral pressure ahead of October’s vote, and US special representative for Iran Elliott Abrams said Netanyahu needs the meeting to understand Trump’s next steps, whether that means returning to the memorandum of understanding or moving towards escalation.

Abrams also warned that the stakes are higher for Netanyahu because Trump is the decision-maker and because Netanyahu’s political fate depends on whether the war’s direction is seen to be serving Israel. He added that multiple difficult topics are expected to be discussed, including Lebanon, Syria and Gaza.

Completely confused.

Not being found guilty is a lot different than being innocent.

The Vietnam War was a decolonization war, a civil war between North and South Vietnam, and part of the wider Cold War. It was primarily communist North Vietnam, supported by the Soviet Union and China, against South Vietnam, backed by the United States. It was also a clash between a rising communist world and a declining colonial order replaced by American power.

True. And we still managed to exterminate more than 2 million civilians in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Noble America? Hardly.

of course that figure is up for debate and include civilians murdered by the communists, but even if true its far less than the toll of death inflicted by your heroes

Israel is a democratic country with rules and laws and a parliament unlike Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and all the rest of them.

Israel had nukes way before Donald Trump.

They need to have nuclear weapons, a mere 8 million Jews, surrounded by 240 million Muslims in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and that's just on their doorstep.

You can then add on millions more if you include Iran, Iraq, Saudi etc

What a foolish statement. I am astonished at some of the stupidity on this board.

Go eat your cornflakes.

Being naïve I fail to see the problem with nukes, they will never be used even by a mad dictator, the resulting reply would be too devastating : Iran nukes Israel, USA and Israel nuke Iran, it's a lose lose situation. Nukes are just 'nice to have', they are a good virtual deterrent and gets one taken seriously. Even Russia wont use a nuclear weapon on Ukraine. NK has the right idea, have nukes and you will never have to fear an attack by America even though both sides know they will never be used which is why I call them a virtual deterrent.

Netanyahu has laid out his plans to launch a massive attack with US at Iran key infrastructures and Trump has agreed but has yet to given the green light. Meanwhile Saudi Arabia has sent the their top officials to Washington and cautioning escalating the tense situation. Trump’s allies in US signaled similar message. Iran warned severe retaliation.

This weekend will be a tinder box if Trump will follow Netanyahu’s lead to strike Iran and set the world on fire. Fate of US and the world economy is in the small hands of a demented narcissist.

You have stuck two sentences together to give false report.

This sentence comes for a different report previously , rather than the current report .

The full sentence is

Earlier this month, Hamas announced that it would dissolve its government in Gaza, a move that experts say put pressure on Israel as progress from the US-brokered ceasefire plan stalled. Their statement on the move made no mention of disarmament.

Hamas havent agreed to the agreement in question

Hamas hasn't agreed to anything, they know how Israelis work and can't be trusted, a couple hours later the moron PM of Israel declined to leave Gaza and that's tells the all story, can't be trusted

we all know for quite a while that Trump's move in Iran was/would be a disaster, now he can't find a way out and it starts to look more and more like Vietnam, funny how history has a tendency to came back and hitting some big mouth guy. The below statement does sound like the grifter finally came to terms and acknowledged defeat

"Well, you never know, most people would have given up by now," as he acknowledged that Iran maintains some ability to launch attacks.

Prior to the war, more than 100 ships passed through the waterway on an average day, transporting about one-fifth of the world's oil.

As traffic in Strait of Hormuz drops, Trump says he doesn't know when US can loosen Iran's grip

Israel never agreed to leave Gaza in the first place .

So your "Israel declined to leave Gaza and that's tells the all story, can't be trusted" claim isn't true or correct

The situation changes daily, but your post is a pretty good summing up of how things stand today, Saturday, August 1st.

Give it up.

The Hasbara narrative is no longer credible in any way, shape, or form.

Really, then please point out where Israel stated they would leave Gaza (without Hamas being removed from power)

Israel's object has always been to remove Hamas
