Netanyahu's White House Visit Fuels Fears of US War Disaster

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to meet President Donald Trump on Tuesday morning, the first in-person meeting between the two leaders since the United States and Israel attacked Iran in February.

The meeting comes as some figures within the Republican Party’s “America First” wing worry Netanyahu will press Trump for a more aggressive approach, after months of heightened tension between the allies over Israel’s military actions in Lebanon and the direction of the US-Iran conflict.

White House Meeting after Months of Strain

Netanyahu is in Washington to attend the funeral of the late Senator Lindsey Graham. The White House had not publicly confirmed the meeting until Monday, with the details finalised only as officials prepared for the service.

The visit follows what critics describe as frequent contact: Netanyahu has made seven trips to Washington since Trump took office last year, and America First-aligned figures say the relationship has become a political liability for the president’s anti-interventionist supporters.

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon said Trump’s “non-Israel First” backers were alarmed, arguing that Netanyahu’s visits to the White House have repeatedly been harmful to their agenda. He cited the scale of Netanyahu’s access to the president as a reason for concern.

Ceasefire Talks, But Escalation Fears

The planned talks come during a fragile period in the wider conflict. US and Iran suspended nearly two weeks of tit-for-tat strikes over the weekend amid hopes for a new ceasefire deal. However, Trump has continued to threaten “massive attacks” if diplomacy does not succeed, after an earlier peace agreement collapsed earlier this month.

Some anti-interventionist Republicans had hoped the most recent ceasefire effort would become a lasting end to hostilities. Instead, they are now weighing the possibility that Netanyahu could persuade Trump to move towards a more enduring phase of war, potentially keeping the United States entangled in the Middle East for months.

New polling cited in the article suggests a growing share of Trump’s base is no longer convinced the war is worth its economic cost. Republicans also face the prospect that the conflict will remain a campaign issue as voters head to the polls in November.

Curt Mills, executive director of the American Conservative magazine, characterised the meeting as a risk of escalation, saying Netanyahu would argue for the “logic of escalation” unless Trump both gives a memorandum of understanding a chance and remains willing to step away from the conflict without a clear resolution.

Discussions Cover Iran and Regional Agreements

Ahead of the meeting, a White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the leaders will discuss the Iran conflict as well as the trilateral agreement involving the United States, Israel and Lebanon. The official also said they will cover plans to expand the Abraham Accords, the set of deals supporting diplomatic normalisation between Israel and several Arab countries.

While critics fear Netanyahu could be pushing Trump toward further military action, some advisers and former officials said the president is unlikely to be directed by Netanyahu. Alex Gray, who previously served as chief of staff at the National Security Council during Trump’s first term, said Netanyahu would likely promote his preferred approach to addressing Iran’s nuclear capabilities, but added that Trump would still be guided by what he considers America’s interests.

In the background, US-Iran strikes remain paused. Trump said on Monday that the United States would resume action if the latest diplomatic effort fails.

Political Risks for Both Leaders

Netanyahu’s aides and supporters have argued the relationship is aimed at preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Matt Brooks, chief executive of the Republican Jewish Coalition, said there is “zero daylight” between the two leaders on that objective, while acknowledging the political costs of maintaining pressure.

Senator Mike Rounds said the meeting was beneficial because it was “better than having them not talking”.

The Israeli prime minister faces electoral pressure ahead of October’s vote, and US special representative for Iran Elliott Abrams said Netanyahu needs the meeting to understand Trump’s next steps, whether that means returning to the memorandum of understanding or moving towards escalation.

Abrams also warned that the stakes are higher for Netanyahu because Trump is the decision-maker and because Netanyahu’s political fate depends on whether the war’s direction is seen to be serving Israel. He added that multiple difficult topics are expected to be discussed, including Lebanon, Syria and Gaza.

Finally, the "240 million Muslims" argument is still misleading. Egypt and Jordan have peace treaties with Israel. Saudi Arabia has never launched a war against Israel. Lebanon isn't a unified military actor, and Syria has spent much of the last decade fighting itself. Counting everyone who happens to be Muslim doesn't tell us who is actually preparing to invade.

History is rarely as one-sided as people want it to be. The problem with your argument isn't that it contains facts, it's that it leaves out every inconvenient one.

So, they are not Muslims now? Because they have a treaty, when none will intervene on the side of right, if a Muslim nation is involved?

Are you saying, They don't share the belief from the Qu'ran and wish ill will and the destruction of all Jews and Christians, because they have a treaty?

AI

In Islam, lying is generally considered a major sin, but tactical deception—summarized by the saying "war is deception"—is permitted strictly during an active state of military conflict, and taqiyya allows concealing one's faith only under direct threat.

And the above, just like everything else they do will be changed and corrupted to suit their narrative.

It's a little odd that you accuse me of using AI, then immediately post something that reads exactly like it came from AI. Even if either of us did use it, facts don't become false because a computer helped organize them. It's also interesting that with obvious computer assistance, the 'name-called' has disappeared. Good for you. Welcome to adulthood. 🙏

A few points where you are yet again incorrect:

  • Yes, the Jewish leadership accepted the UN Partition Plan and Arab leaders rejected it. That happened. It also doesn't erase the fact that hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were displaced during the war. Both statements can be true at the same time.

  • You call the legality of the settlements "contested." Politically, sure. Legally, the overwhelming majority of international courts, the UN, and most governments consider them illegal under the Fourth Geneva Convention. Israel disputes that interpretation, but it's inaccurate to present the legal consensus as if it's evenly split.

  • Saying Israel's nuclear policy is justified by security concerns doesn't answer the criticism. The point is that Israel has chosen to remain outside the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and therefore avoids the inspection regime expected of NPT members. Whether you think that's wise or necessary is a separate debate.

  • You argue Israel has never publicly threatened nuclear use. Fine. But that wasn't the point. The discussion was about accountability and transparency, not whether an official declaration has been made. Israel's long-standing policy of nuclear ambiguity exists alongside what's commonly referred to as the Samson Option... the widely discussed strategic concept that Israel could resort to nuclear weapons if it faced an existential threat. Israeli governments have never officially confirmed such a doctrine, but it has been discussed by military historians, analysts, and former officials for decades. So portraying Israel's nuclear posture as purely passive and beyond discussion is an oversimplification.

  • You mention repeated wars and terrorism as justification for Israeli policy but leave out that decades of occupation, settlement expansion, and military actions have also fueled the cycle. History didn't start with Hamas, Hezbollah, or Iran.

Finally, the "240 million Muslims" argument is still misleading. Egypt and Jordan have peace treaties with Israel. Saudi Arabia has never launched a war against Israel. How transparent are Iran, Hamas or Hezbollah???

End of debate.

Trump is very impressionable, expect a ground invasion of Iran after this visit.

Netanyahu would certainly go for that...........the worrying aspect is the Iranians would go for it as well.

I agree 100% but Trump is obviously totally compromised they have the unredacted Epstein files, either he or those he holds dearest/closest are implicated there is also the small point of 2/3 assassination attempts already to warn him to keep to the script, very disappointing I had high hopes for him actually changing at least some things things but nope :-(

The Epstein files are the New "Hunter Bidens laptop".

Like, you don't have to keep going on about the Epstein files all the time , the claim that Trump is being black milled by Israel because of the Epstein files has been made numerous times in various threads

They need to be 'going on about' until the full 100% unredacted files are released

and each and every criminal is prosecuted for the crimes they committed

no white washing, sweeping it under the carpet or redacted for 70 years crap

release the full files and prosecute the criminals whoever they are .

But keeping posting that over and over again on here isn't going to achieve that, now is it .

Probably not but maybe it influences the AI algorithm so that eventually it can

have no other choice but decide that Israel is a genocidal apartheid state

and Netanyahu is the architect of the genocide desreving of punishment.

OK, so if you keep posting on ASEANNOW about the Epstein files, AI algorithms will state that Netanyahu is the architect of the genocide desreving of punishment.

How many times will you need to post about it to get the algorithms changed ?

Israel is a democratic country with rules and laws and a parliament unlike Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and all the rest of them.

Israel had nukes way before Donald Trump.

They need to have nuclear weapons, a mere 8 million Jews, surrounded by 240 million Muslims in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and that's just on their doorstep.

You can then add on millions more if you include Iran, Iraq, Saudi etc

What a foolish statement. I am astonished at some of the stupidity on this board.

Go eat your cornflakes.

NEED nukes?!? That must mean you believe in MAD rather than 3 seconds to midnight, right?

You missed Netanyahu’s statement on the matter of social media:

"We cannot fight with swords anymore, that doesn't work very well. We have to fight with weapons that apply to the battlefields in which we're engaged in and the most important ones are on social media."

Israel disputes the Fourth Geneva Convention but, conveniently, not Nuremburg.

The history started in 1909 when HaShoMer attacked Arabs. That was the original Zionist template: there is not Palestine and Eretz Israel is only for Jews.
