Netanyahu's White House Visit Fuels Fears of US War Disaster

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to meet President Donald Trump on Tuesday morning, the first in-person meeting between the two leaders since the United States and Israel attacked Iran in February.

The meeting comes as some figures within the Republican Party’s “America First” wing worry Netanyahu will press Trump for a more aggressive approach, after months of heightened tension between the allies over Israel’s military actions in Lebanon and the direction of the US-Iran conflict.

White House Meeting after Months of Strain

Netanyahu is in Washington to attend the funeral of the late Senator Lindsey Graham. The White House had not publicly confirmed the meeting until Monday, with the details finalised only as officials prepared for the service.

The visit follows what critics describe as frequent contact: Netanyahu has made seven trips to Washington since Trump took office last year, and America First-aligned figures say the relationship has become a political liability for the president’s anti-interventionist supporters.

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon said Trump’s “non-Israel First” backers were alarmed, arguing that Netanyahu’s visits to the White House have repeatedly been harmful to their agenda. He cited the scale of Netanyahu’s access to the president as a reason for concern.

Ceasefire Talks, But Escalation Fears

The planned talks come during a fragile period in the wider conflict. US and Iran suspended nearly two weeks of tit-for-tat strikes over the weekend amid hopes for a new ceasefire deal. However, Trump has continued to threaten “massive attacks” if diplomacy does not succeed, after an earlier peace agreement collapsed earlier this month.

Some anti-interventionist Republicans had hoped the most recent ceasefire effort would become a lasting end to hostilities. Instead, they are now weighing the possibility that Netanyahu could persuade Trump to move towards a more enduring phase of war, potentially keeping the United States entangled in the Middle East for months.

New polling cited in the article suggests a growing share of Trump’s base is no longer convinced the war is worth its economic cost. Republicans also face the prospect that the conflict will remain a campaign issue as voters head to the polls in November.

Curt Mills, executive director of the American Conservative magazine, characterised the meeting as a risk of escalation, saying Netanyahu would argue for the “logic of escalation” unless Trump both gives a memorandum of understanding a chance and remains willing to step away from the conflict without a clear resolution.

Discussions Cover Iran and Regional Agreements

Ahead of the meeting, a White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the leaders will discuss the Iran conflict as well as the trilateral agreement involving the United States, Israel and Lebanon. The official also said they will cover plans to expand the Abraham Accords, the set of deals supporting diplomatic normalisation between Israel and several Arab countries.

While critics fear Netanyahu could be pushing Trump toward further military action, some advisers and former officials said the president is unlikely to be directed by Netanyahu. Alex Gray, who previously served as chief of staff at the National Security Council during Trump’s first term, said Netanyahu would likely promote his preferred approach to addressing Iran’s nuclear capabilities, but added that Trump would still be guided by what he considers America’s interests.

In the background, US-Iran strikes remain paused. Trump said on Monday that the United States would resume action if the latest diplomatic effort fails.

Political Risks for Both Leaders

Netanyahu’s aides and supporters have argued the relationship is aimed at preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Matt Brooks, chief executive of the Republican Jewish Coalition, said there is “zero daylight” between the two leaders on that objective, while acknowledging the political costs of maintaining pressure.

Senator Mike Rounds said the meeting was beneficial because it was “better than having them not talking”.

The Israeli prime minister faces electoral pressure ahead of October’s vote, and US special representative for Iran Elliott Abrams said Netanyahu needs the meeting to understand Trump’s next steps, whether that means returning to the memorandum of understanding or moving towards escalation.

Abrams also warned that the stakes are higher for Netanyahu because Trump is the decision-maker and because Netanyahu’s political fate depends on whether the war’s direction is seen to be serving Israel. He added that multiple difficult topics are expected to be discussed, including Lebanon, Syria and Gaza.

If it weren't for Trump and a lot of Republicans, the USA would be heading for a Muslim caliphate such is the sycophantic behaviour towards them by the Democratic Party, who are giving in to all their demands, in the hope of votes.

You cannot negotiate or expect honourable treaties or agreements with fanatics such as Iran. They only make such deals to regroup.

They only understand force.

I would welcome the USA being a Muslim caliphate... the chance that they would be exporting terror like they do now all over the world would actually be diminished.

And it was the USA who killed the leadership during peace negotiations. Until I have seen Iran doing the same, I would not be very loud talking about honor as an American, you have none.

Really could have done some great work for humanity and the world if given a decade or two.

The Western world and Middle East would certainly be in a much better place than it is now. 🙂

Yup. because Israel is still in the Old Testament, "an eye for an eye", forgetting that whenever biblical figures actually lived by that code, from Samson’s escalating vendettas against the Philistines to Simeon and Levi’s bloody revenge at Shechem, it invariably unraveled into catastrophic ruin rather than justice.

History never repeats, but it always rhymes. One could and should learn from it.

Oct 17 was a horrible thing to happen, but it is just part of an endless cycle of mutual distruction. Somebody needs ot make a break from it... I guess it is not unschooled little children rummaging for food in bombed out houses.

This is rather a job for those self-righteous modern Phariseans sitting in their villas on the other side of the border to finally take this supposed god-given responsibility for their Garden of Eden seriously (or is this another instance where somebody demands the whole cake -- the "holy" land -- while telling the hungry to feast on air? Nobody talks highly of Phariseans nowaydays, do they!).

Managing one of the new resorts in Gaza would be good. He'll be dead before that will start though, plus the resort would soon be operating at a loss.

Yes, Israel hasn't been found guilty of war crimes in an Intenational Court

It's still to come, only because the proceedings are not finished. That Israel will be found guilty of war crimes is as certain as death itself. Why do you think an international court issued warrants for Netanyahu and his little helper?

Why do you think they accepted jurisdiction and found there is a possibility of war crimes?

Israel has acted lawfully

if so why there are arrest warrants for him and his defense minister... sure Israelis officials will deny.

The warrants said there was reason to believe Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant have used “starvation as a method of warfare” by restricting humanitarian aid and have intentionally targeted civilians in Israel’s campaign against Hamas in Gaza

Bombing everthing to dust and then wondering why kids who have never seen a school in their life, but having lost mutliple family members in fornt of their eyes, can easily be taken in by propaganda shows how little foresight there has been in Israel foreign politics over the last 75 years.

That's an exceptionally good post and a fitting reply to a statement that sounds like it was taken verbatim out of the Hasbara playbook.

"For the first time, Hamas officially has committed to an actionable plan for relinquishing all its weapons, which will be followed by Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

Iran paid to bring legal actipon aginst Israel in the International Court .

Its an attempt by Israel's enemies to win the war .

You don't seem to have understood the announcement .

The USA and Israel have come to an agreement .

The agreement was that Hamas will completely be removed from power .

The agreement doesn't involved Hamas themselves , they werent part of the discussion .

Looks like they agreed to a final solution to the Palestine problem 😉

You have stuck two sentences together to give false report.

This sentence comes for a different report previously , rather than the current report .

The full sentence is

Earlier this month, Hamas announced that it would dissolve its government in Gaza, a move that experts say put pressure on Israel as progress from the US-brokered ceasefire plan stalled. Their statement on the move made no mention of disarmament.

Hamas havent agreed to the agreement in question
