Swedish MP Condemns Brexit Deportations of Elderly Britons

A Swedish MP has criticised the deportation and removal of elderly British citizens from Sweden over Brexit residency rules, saying the cases are harming relations with the United Kingdom as both countries seek to improve ties.

Häkan Svenneling, an opposition lawmaker for Värmland, said he had written to Sweden’s migration minister, Johan Forssell, after Joyce Thomas, a 78-year-old British widow, was given four weeks to leave Sweden following 21 years living in the country.

Letter Sparks Questions Over Deportations

Svenneling said Thomas was ordered to leave after an appeal failed a week earlier, and he asked Forssell what steps the government plans to take “to stop the deportations”. Svenneling is due to meet Thomas on Wednesday.

Thomas moved to Sweden in her late 50s to live nearer one of her sons and her grandchildren. Her husband, who did administrative work in their household, died of cancer in 2023. Thomas said she and friends had checked whether they needed to complete forms to remain after Brexit, and were told they did not.

She later submitted a late application in 2023, several weeks after returning from the UK, but missed the deadline of 31 December 2021. Thomas told the Guardian that she is in “shock” and said her situation has left her feeling unwell, with her removal imminent.

Withdrawal Agreement And Missed Deadlines

Svenneling argued that British citizens who were legally resident in Sweden before the UK’s exit from the EU should retain their existing rights under the withdrawal agreement. He said the EU-UK treaty was not intended to strip people who had lived in Sweden for decades of their right to remain due to a missed deadline or alleged shortcomings in an application.

His intervention also adds to growing pressure on Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and his centre-right minority coalition to address concerns about how Sweden is applying the legally binding withdrawal agreement.

Svenneling said the UK had long been an important partner for Sweden and described the removals as damaging bilateral relations.

Another Elderly Case Highlighted

The MP also cited another case involving Horace (George) Mason, 74, who has dementia and Parkinson’s disease and is in full-time care. Mason moved to Sweden 25 years ago to be near his son Carl and grandchildren and was also given four weeks to leave.

Mason’s family tried a second legal route to remain, arguing that European human rights rules require him to be able to stay close to relatives who rely on him. The migration court of appeal ruled against the request, saying the state’s interest in regulated immigration outweighed Mason’s interest in continuing to reside in Sweden.

Writing in the Guardian, David Milstead, who leads the campaign group Brits in Sweden, said the group had raised concerns about Sweden’s approach as far back as 2020 and said the safeguards were “untested”. He said that among cases of genuine late applications brought to the group, it could not verify an instance where Sweden accepted the reasons for applying after the deadline.

UK Says Sweden Takes Stricter Approach

The UK Foreign Office said it had repeatedly raised concerns with the European Commission that Sweden takes a considerably stricter approach than other EU member states to late applications, with a disproportionate number of refusals. It said that in practice people were unlikely to have their grounds for a late application accepted.

Sweden’s migration agency said it could not comment on individual cases. It added that not knowing that a Brexit-related application needed to be made to remain in the country was not considered a reasonable ground.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone try and spin Brexit quite like that. Top marks for imagination.

The truth sometimes hurts, Nauseus. You need to find a way of dealing with it.

I'm always open to learning something new, so why don't you explain to me how Brexit could (and should) have been a success.

After all, Brexiters such as yourself are always claiming that it's not Brexit that was the problem, merely the way that it was implemented (by Johnson of all people, lest we forget).

It's not one incident though is it.

The rape gangs have been operating for decades, covered up by Labour and a racist police force.

I thought that rape gang members were all recent illegal Muslims arriving by boat and that such things didn't exist until the last few years?

Of course, who could forget that Blair's first act as Labour PM was to instruct the police to be anti-white🤦

If you want an example of a racist police unit then look no further than the SPG which operated in Brixton in the '70s and '80s. However, I doubt that you will have heard of them given your lack of knowledge about London.

Who told you that? It's well known that many are second gen immigrants.

Not sure. Was that before his illegal war in Iraq or after?

Bit before my time Raymond, I moved to London in the 90's.

But with your continued adherence to the left's "anti-racism" (a euphemism for anti-white racism) agenda which declares the answer to historical racism is equal and opposite racism, you are only making things worse. It just continues the cycle of racial hatred that you promote with your attempts at ethnic erasure of white ethnicities, in particular the English.

I'm fine with the truth, Ray. I'm not fine with your fantastic version of it, though.

As for your question, how many times do we need to repeat this process? It's a waste of our times.

Why should we who didn't want to leave, and were negatively effected by it, simply 'get over Brexit' and ignore and passively accept the negative consequences of it?

Why should you? Because the remoaners put up a pathetic case for remaining and you were out voted. I agree we should have stayed in but blame Cameron and the Tories, it was their fault.

And that sounds a lot like the rhetoric used by the NF in the '70s.

At least, they admitted that they were racist.

It's a very pertinent question, Nauseus.

A starting point for ending this process would be for you to say something along the lines of, for example, "One way to have mitigated the problem caused by the increased checks on UK exports to the EU under the TCA would have been to have implemented/ agreed <X> (Note: I have no idea what this alternative <X> might be).

I can't promise that I wouldn't have any supplementary questions but sadly you haven't ever got as far as describing<X>.

The UK has regained its sovereignty and no longer has to clear its laws with the EU regualtory bodies.

Member states do not have to clear domestic law with the EU regulatory bodies, it merely has to be consistent with it.

The EU can only function if there is compromise. Having said that, EU member states have input into the development of EU law. If they don't want it then then, in most cases, they can effectively block or stiffle it. This is why Orban was such a thorn in the side for the other EU members.

What practical benefits has regaining this 'lost' sovereignty meant for the UK?

Being in the EU doesn't make you any less "English" by the way. You should find a less harmful way to deal with your internalized bias. It's too late for you to be all "cosmopolitan". You can drop the 'Euro-chic' fantasy. Those socks and sandals look tragic, and that ponytail at the back is doing absolutely nothing to hide your bald spot.🙃

Just trying to help for whenever you're next able to visit Thailand.

Ray, you've asked similar questions of me at least once a year for the last decade. From those exchanges, it is obvious that you will never accept my points of view and answers. Therefore I see another round of this same old as being pointless. The only argument you ever put forward is economic. If the EU had prioritized economics and not politics, then the UK might well have remained in whatever alliance that turned out to look like.

Nauseus, It is not a question of not accepting your point of view. You and others continually say that the reason that Brexit has not delivered the promised economic benefits is because it was not implemented corrected. I simply ask you to elaborate on this point and explain what this difference implementation would look like in practice. To date, you have been unwilling or unable to do so.

The economic argument is central to the Brexit discussion so I don't see how it can be disregarded, however notwithstanding that fact, how have we (the UK) benefitted in practical terms by regaining our 'lost' sovereignty?

Imo many Brexiters had an unrealistic vision of the UK's position in a post-Brexit 21st century world. There was a yearning for - and a belief that? - a Britain which would regain its' position on the world stage and, once again, project power just as we did in the 19th and first half of the 20th century. Whether that was/ would be a good or bad thing is irrelevant; it is a Britain that no longer exists and will not exist again.

The concept of sovereignty is a myth: Sure, we can now have as many bendy bananas as we want, but the truth of the matter is that in 2026 the UK is a rule-taker and not a rule-maker. The US, China and the EU (probably in that order) are the world's economic, political and diplomatic superpowers. As the second or third most powerful individual member of the EU, the UK had a voice on the world stage; outside of it we are barely heard and we effectively do what the three major powers tell us to do.

Your hatred of the white English/British is so transparent. 😄

You think if we rejoin the EU you can start sipping lattes in road side cafes, buy a Vespa and when asked about your nationality, reply "Oh, I'm European darling, it's absolutely fabulous".

Not gonna happen Ray. You're English born and bred. Get on your flat cap, make yourself a chip butty and a milky cup of tea and start singing God Save The King. 😄

I don't know how many times I have to explain the same thing to yo:

  • I am English born and bred (at least you got one thing correct)

  • I am white

  • I am rational (mostly)

  • I do not loathe myself

  • Ergo, I do not hate the white English/ British

Lattes and Vespas banned in the UK as a result of Brexit? It's worse than I thought! I was in Bologna a couple of months ago; no wonder I got a frosty welcome from Italian immigration.

Something that would go a long way to curbing my nagging would be a reply of substance from you which describes how Brexit in practical terms should have implemented.

Personally, I don't think it unreasonable for someone to challenge any of my statements and then expect me to defend my position with facts and a logical argument.
