Three Suspects Fire At Party In South Africa, Killing 11

Three assailants shot at least 11 people to death during a mass shooting at a house party in South Africa on Tuesday night, police said on Wednesday.

Police said three other people were wounded in the attack in the KwaMakhutha township, about 30 kilometres (19 miles) south of Durban on the east coast. One of the victims was a woman believed to be pregnant, police said in a statement.

Attack At KwaMakhutha Township House

Police said the victims had gathered at the house for a party when the suspects entered and opened fire.

The shooting happened in KwaMakhutha on Tuesday night, according to police.

Victims And Injuries

In total, police reported 11 people were killed and three were injured. Police gave no further detail on the condition of the wounded.

The statement said one of the dead was a woman thought to be pregnant.

Police Search For Suspects

Police said they were searching for the suspects and that no arrests had been made as of Wednesday.

They also said the motive was not known.

Some of the people present at the house were known to police as part of investigations into criminal activity, police said. They declined to provide additional information about those investigations.

Feud Between Rival Groupings Cited

Police said the motive for the shooting could not yet be confirmed but added that a feud between rival groupings could not be ruled out.

The incident is among a series of mass shootings in South Africa in recent years. Police pointed to an earlier case in June, when multiple suspects killed 12 people in a poor neighbourhood in Johannesburg.
