What makes you think I don't read the news? I read the news. Even CNN, ABC, Politico and AP (among others). Admittedly, I still can't get through MSNOW without gagging. But then I take the facts they present and do some searching for alternative analyses. And I also read "unapproved sources", then do some searching to see if their analysis washes.

You have a lot more confidence in them than I do. So we'll have to agree to disagree about the rest of your post. Especially this part: Most professionals are not only knowledgeable in their given field but also have a sense of civic duty and responsibility. They do what they're told, by the people paying their salaries and funding their studies. If they don't, their salaries stop and their next study won't get funding. That's how it works in the real world.

I’m not saying that conservative journalists are necessarily stupid -- there’s a long tradition of respectable conservative journalism following William F. Buckley, George Will, and many other brilliant people. But watching a far-right-wing journalist (Natalie Harp on One America News?) twisting themself into a pretzel trying to justify Trump’s latest atrocity is a sad spectacle to watch.

Believe it or not, I appreciate the polite discourse. It's refreshing.

Later in my career, I became a "Subject Matter Expert" in an oilfield engineering capacity. I was the guy doing the studies to see what equipment worked best and how to make it last longer. If the results of the studies didn't show our equipment to be better, we never published. We'd use it internally to see what we could do better, but the study never got presented at the symposiums or in the technical papers. The only studies that the public got to see were the ones where our product looked better. That's where my skepticism about "The Science" comes from. I lived it.

Regarding the media (and especially MSNOW), I'm going with this guy. From today. Because I couldn't say it better myself:

There is a difference between opinion pieces and news articles. On the opinion pages, the owner is free to advance things or subjects he believe. But of course, the serious media still fact check what is written in the opinion pieces and they bring corrections when they made a mistake.

That said, I stopped my subscription of Washington Post when Bezos began to meddle in what had traditionally been an independent section of the paper.

To those that don't like (read: understand) the traditional media, ask yourself why a paper like New York Times is highly regarded amongst journalist all over the free world. And ask yourself if your preferred news media has a correction page or a mean of bringing correction. And if it doesn't, then ask yourself why not.
