Trump Faces Scrutiny Over Personal Financial Gains

Legal and ethics experts and senior Democrats have raised alarm after Donald Trump’s second term, saying his administration has allowed him to expand his personal wealth while oversight of potential conflicts of interest has weakened.

They point to financial disclosure filings showing that Trump generated unprecedented returns from crypto-linked activities and used political and media platforms tied to him to monetise access. Trump’s allies and advisers dispute that he has breached conflict rules, arguing he is complying with applicable laws.

Crypto windfalls and investor losses

Trump reported revenue of about $2.2bn in 2025, according to the filing cited by critics, describing a rise driven by his cryptocurrency holdings and related business activity. In disclosures submitted in June, he reported earning at least $1.4bn from crypto ventures.

Critics also highlighted harm to investors. They said roughly one million people were exposed through a Trump-linked crypto scheme and collectively lost nearly $3.8bn as the value of volatile holdings fell.

Trump’s embrace of crypto has been central to the scrutiny. Critics noted his earlier remarks warning that the sector was a “scam” and a “disaster waiting to happen” in 2021, before he later backed efforts to promote the US as a hub with less regulation.

Truth Social access for a fee

Democrats also focused on Trump’s Truth Social business. They say it is pushing a scheme offering wealthy buyers special early access to his posts for $100,000 per month, raising potential conflict-of-interest and corruption concerns.

In July, Senator Mark Warner, a Democrat, wrote to six major Wall Street industry groups urging them to reject a new Truth Social product branded “Truth API”. Warner argued the proposal would “sell privileged access” to presidential communications that can move markets, benefiting Trump’s personal finances.

Virginia Canter, chief counsel for ethics and anti-corruption at Democracy Defenders Action, said the approach represented an escalation in using office for private gain, and warned that providing high-speed access to non-public information could encourage conduct resembling insider trading.

Truth Media & Technology, the company behind Truth Social, said on 10 August that it lost $238m in the three months through June, after expanding into new businesses including crypto.

Deals involving the justice department and foreign interests

Beyond media and crypto, critics said Trump has also pursued transactional decisions that favour himself and his family.

They cited concerns that Trump’s justice department helped shape a settlement of a $10bn lawsuit Trump brought against the IRS over a leak of his tax returns. Critics said the agreement could grant him and his family immunity from audits of prior tax years and potentially save $100m.

Other scrutiny involved foreign-related assets. Critics said Trump sought to circumvent the constitutional prohibition on foreign emoluments by accepting a $400m plane as a gift from Qatar, alongside additional backing from wealthy foreigners for Trump family hotel and golf deals abroad.

Ethics experts said Trump has not fully insulated himself from conflicts. They noted that, unlike some predecessors, he has declined to place assets into a completely blind trust or to divest from his businesses.

Regulatory gaps and shifting oversight

Former election officials and legal experts said the pattern amounts to an unprecedented approach to benefiting financially from the presidency. Larry Noble, a former general counsel at the Federal Election Commission, said Trump reported business holdings earning over $2bn in the first year of the term, and warned that the administration’s stance amounts to “pay to play”.

Princeton historian Julian Zelizer told the Guardian that Trump has removed “guardrails” between his businesses and public policy, while Cornell economist Eswar Prasad criticised what he described as regulatory laxness toward the crypto industry, arguing it directly benefits the Trump family.

Critics cited Binance, the world’s biggest crypto exchange, saying weak oversight and enforcement have contributed to scandals. They also pointed to a $2bn investment involving Binance and a World Liberty Financial stablecoin, alongside prior criminal and compliance actions relating to Binance and its former chief executive, Changpeng Zhao, who was pardoned by Trump.

A CNN poll released in late July found 66% of respondents agreed Trump does not put the good of the country over personal gain.

The antics of Trump and his family to use the influence of Trump's office to make billions of profits - and done in plain sight - makes the Watergate affair seem like simply an act of bad judgement. I still can't understand how he's getting away with all this. He's a crook and an already convicted one at that. He's got puppets running the FBI and Justice Dept., and a Supreme Court stacked in his favor. There must be someway to arrest him and lock him up. I just can't believe that he is untouchable.

Psychologically:

Normalization: When people repeatedly see wrongdoing without consequences, the brain begins treating it as ordinary rather than exceptional.

Desensitization: Repeated exposure reduces emotional shock. What initially produces outrage eventually produces a shrug.

Learned helplessness: If obvious corruption persists despite public criticism, people may conclude that resistance is pointless: “Nothing will change anyway.”

Moral disengagement: People find ways to rationalize behavior they would condemn in other circumstances—“everyone does it,” “that's just politics,” or “our side needs to do whatever it takes.”

Cynicism: People stop believing that institutions genuinely operate according to stated principles. That can become self-reinforcing: once everyone expects corruption, fewer people bother defending integrity.

Pluralistic ignorance: Individuals may privately recognize something is wrong while assuming everyone else accepts it. Consequently, nobody speaks up, creating the appearance of widespread acceptance.

Power signaling: Corruption conducted openly can communicate that the perpetrators believe themselves powerful enough to ignore the rules. That can intimidate others and discourage resistance.

Erosion of the taboo: Laws and ethical standards depend partly on social norms. When violations become routine and visible, the social cost of violating them declines.

Institutional legitimacy decay: Eventually, people don't merely distrust particular officials—they begin distrusting the institution itself.

Exactly the answer I anticipated.

“I don't respond to you anymore and I won't in the future”. News flash! You just did.

So Trump didn’t break any law related to your so called claim of “profiteering” during his second administration.

You could have just said that. Other than your personal opinions which have no merit.

“The Dems will also retake the Senate”. Based on your past predictions you’re getting way ahead of yourself, again. It ain’t over until it’s over. You guys still haven’t learned anything yet.

You have about three months before your predictions of the dollar crashing, pensions becoming worthless and all the other predictions you claimed would happen at the two year mark of Trump's presidency.

“And then jail the felon”.

If I had a dollar every time I heard that I could start my own hedge fund.

How did Trump’s impeachments work out for you? Still waiting.

And nobody really talks about the 3, 600 lawsuits he was engaged in before his first term began with small contractors that he defrauded out of huge amounts of money. Each individual fraud was very likely only a few hundred thousand dollars. Which is a lot of money for a small contractor but not very much for Trump. However when added together it likely represents a good portion of his stolen and ill gotten fortune.

When you add in the Trump university fraud, the billions that he earned from five major bankruptcies, all the bank fraud and all the other crimes, you do have the biggest gangster in the history of the American presidency, in addition to the most corrupt by a hundredfold.

Fascinating how so few of his supporters talk about that kind of stuff these days. Some even go so far as to deny it.

Saint Donald. Total revisionist history, a complete reformation of his entire career, and a total erasure of his past crimes, moral terpitude, and a total and complete willingness to overlook a lifetime of moral bankruptcy.

Another regurgitator I see.

Trump has no difficulty hiring contractors, yet the left would have us believe Trump cheats every contractor he works with. Only a fool would believe such a thing. Of course, all one has to be is a liar to say it.

Why not provide a few examples of the lawsuits in which Trump was shown to be cheating contractors? Oh, that's right, you can't, you're just another Trump-obsessed regurgitator.

Exactly. Criticism and open mindedness is what independent thinkers engage in, and it sets them apart from dogmatic subjects of a wannabe king. I invite you to reflect on that for just a moment.

With many people, once they got attached to a theory, it was hard to get them detached. They’d screen out unhelpful facts, invent favorable ones, and ignore contradictions in their own claims. Look at those Sandy Hook, multiple fraud convictions, and Jan. 6th truthers, babbling about false flags and crisis actors and all the rest. When people were motivated enough to believe something, they were going to believe it no matter what. There was no such thing as a bridge too far.

The trump administration approved a bank license for trump’s crypto company that people trying to buy political favors are funneling money to.

This isn’t an administration, it’s an organized crime family.

'Trump-appointed regulator OKs banking license for Trump-linked crypto firm'

https://www.politico.com/news/2026/08/14/trump-world-liberty-bank-charter-crypto-01038464

"The Trump administration has granted preliminary approval for a cryptocurrency venture backed by President Donald Trump’s family to operate a federally chartered trust bank, over the protests of Democrats who decried the decision as riddled with conflicts of interest.

The decision stands to give new powers and federal credibility to a venture in which Trump and his family retain a substantial financial interest. It’s also among the most direct official actions that the administration has taken involving the president’s private finances."

So trump is shutting down and deleting the government's most important tool in its fight against money laundering.

Nothing to see here, move along!

'Trump’s Gift to the Money Launderers'

https://www.thebulwark.com/p/trumps-gift-to-the-money-launderers-database-treasury

"In the latest development, the Department of the Treasury announced this week that it would destroy the government’s registry of shell-company ownership. This is an anti-corruption database that Treasury is by law required to maintain, so that law enforcement can more easily “follow the money” when investigating crimes.

Even worse, the Trump administration will also destroy all the data it has already collected, so that no future presidential administration or local police department can use it, either".

There is no level of scrutiny that could possibly be enough for Trump's massive level of corruption and profiteering on his second term. It is nothing short of an abomination and an absolute pox on the face of America.

He is the most corrupt president in American history likely by 100 fold. And the really scary part is that his supporters don't even seem to question it, even though he's being very transparent about it. It's about the only thing he is being transparent about.

A lot of his supporters don't care because they are all getting a cut. Albeit through advanced info for insider trading, nepotism, awarding government contracts, or as in the case of the Jan 6 lot, attempts to give them a slush fund.

While that is partly true the vast majority of his supporters are not profiting at all from his presidency. A small percentage have money invested in the stock market, but other than, that there were no tax cuts, and any of the detect place primarily benefited huge corporations that already have multiple loopholes, tariffs only made prices rise, and this ridiculous war is causing significant inflation in America despite the fake government numbers.

To the contrary there were a lot of Republican voting business owners and who had businesses that have been thrown under the bus as a result of a relatively anemic economy, and very low consumer confidence, and there have been a lot of farmers who have been forced to sell their generational farms, due to the stupid tariffs, and the inability to find labor due to a rather fear mongering, ignorant, and overreaching immigration policy.

You can't fight illegal immigration without first addressing the legal immigration system which nobody is talking about.
