Trump Hints US May Not Back UK Over Falklands

Donald Trump has indicated that the United States might not step in to support the UK in a future conflict with Argentina over the Falkland Islands.

In an interview with GB News, the US president said Britain had not helped him during America’s war with Iran. He suggested that context would shape whether Washington came to London’s aid in the event of another dispute with Buenos Aires.

Trump Remarks on Potential Falklands Row

Trump’s comments build on earlier remarks in which he said the US could review its neutral position on the islands’ sovereignty if the UK did not raise defence spending.

Iran War Context and Requests for Ships

Trump told GB News that when the first war took place “a long time ago”, he had watched developments closely and said Britain “comported yourselves very well”.

He then turned to the current conflict with Iran, saying the UK had not been there to support him, despite later adding that US military efforts did not require help.

He said he asked Nato and also raised the issue with then-UK leader Keir Starmer, asking why additional vessels were not sent. Trump said Starmer told him that no ships were available, which he described as “pretty sad”.

Trump also argued that Nato had not been involved even though, he said, many Nato countries rely on a large share of their oil imports moving through the Strait of Hormuz. He added that the US was handling the situation itself.

Sovereignty Dispute, UK Response and Referendum

The Falklands remain at the centre of a sovereignty dispute between Britain and Argentina, more than 40 years after fighting between the two countries in 1982.

A British task force forced Argentine forces out after they landed on the islands to back a territorial claim. The war lasted 74 days and resulted in the deaths of 255 British military personnel, three islanders and 649 Argentine military personnel.

Argentina and the UK both continue to dispute sovereignty, with previous US administrations having formally recognised Britain’s de facto administration of the islands while not taking a formal position on sovereignty.

The latest US remarks come as Argentinian President Javier Milei is scheduled to make a televised address on Thursday night about what he calls his country’s “historic” claim.

In separate comments, the UK government said Falkland islanders “are British with a right to determine their own future”. A spokesperson added that islanders have repeatedly said they want to remain a British overseas territory and that the UK’s commitment is “unwavering”.

In a 2013 referendum, residents voted overwhelmingly to remain a British overseas territory, with 99.8% voting in favour and three against.

when I heard Trump's puppet (Milei) starting the rhetoric about the Falkland islands and the he would be taxing the companies drilling oil down there, my first thought was that Trump was behind it, one has to keep in mind that Trump bailed Argentine's right wing leader out, knowing Trump way of dealing, here we may have a double wammmmmy maybe he will play the peace maker (another war win for his so long list) and UK has to bend the knee or he will help the Milei guy to get it as it's near Argentine, same claim as Trump make about Canada

Why should he help?

Where was the UK (and Nato) when Trump asked for Hormuz collaboration?

Beside that, isn’t Britain shifting toward Muslim cultural dominance?

-Muslim mayors in major cities.

-Pakistani-heritage gangs’ organised rape of white girls ignored.

-Union Jack/St George’s flag banned in places.

-Arrests for posts critical of immigration, islam or grooming gangs.

-King Charles issues Ramadan messages, skips Easter ones.

-Institutions complicit or too scared to resist.

Why help a muslim oriented country?

Pretty sure New Zealand and australia plus Canada would back the UK. Possibly other Commonwealth Countries. NZ offered Frigates and troops last time probably would do something similar again. Who cares what the USA does. Cuts both ways!

The British first established a settlement on the Falkland Islands in 1765. Before American independence. The Dutch should claim back New Amsterdam.

Quite far away from Britain, don't you think? Maybe it is questionable that they went there in the first place.

Same could be said of any peoples anywhere on the planet since human life first evolved from the African continent. Your points are ridiculous in today's world where many generations have given birth to their offspring on the Falklands since before the country of Argentina even existed.

You do realize that Argentina has elections, with primaries, same as many non dictatorships. Google is your friend if you need explaining.

Oh wait, do you still think DJT is a king ?

You do realize Javier Milei, one of Trumps right wing extremist support leaders, is up for re-election next year and with his country flailing he needs a distraction like the Falklands narrative.

Yes, I am aware of that. This has also led to many problems all around the world as many countries expanded far away and raised their flags. Regarding the Falklands I am personally neutral. But let's not forget that the British Empire once covered 24 % of the whole Earth land area.

Trump should gave nothing to do with this illegitimate British government until a general election is held.

I think we'd all be in favour of Trump having nothing to with Britain. Where do we sign up? (Obviously you will be excluded)

Trumps military is already busy with Iran and this man child, is upset that the world will not help him and the USA

fight against Iran. This dinosaur of the USA needs to retire, I hope his support base has finally wised up to this

orange man. The USA does not have many friends left in the world, and the smart American are realizing this.

Bit like America's record on defeats, including the current war.

I wouldn't call it a defeat, it is impossible to win anything if only one side believe in being fair, PC, Woke. Like fighting with one leg tied, one eye covered 🤣

Be careful. Trump could offer them $10 million each to vote to become American. There's what... 3500 of them?

Besides, that's a relatively novel concept for the Empire... Letting the native people decide.

I don't have a dog in this fight (though I'd be rooting for the Brits), but I think the power dynamics have changed since 1982. Remember, the UK was just a few aircraft away from losing even back then. And their military isn't the same. That's what Trump has been harping about.

Britain had a total of 28 Sea Harriers, 6 were lost, non by air to air combat.

As for British ground troops who were outnumbered, the Argentinian troops hadn't got the stomach to put up much of fight when faced with Paratroopers and Royal Marines, clearing trenches with fixed bayonets and grenades.

What a pathetic little man he is. Waiting for the maga faithfull on here to spin this. Wah wah you not help me in the Strait of Hormuz.

As a "MAGA faithfull" I will offer a "spin" for you. The Falkland Islands, or Islas Malvinas, should rightfully belong to Argentina because they are geographically part of the South Atlantic region immediately off the Argentine coast and because Argentina inherited Spain’s territorial claims when it gained independence. Argentina established and exercised authority over the islands before Britain seized control in 1833, an act Argentina considers an unlawful removal of its authorities. The continued British administration is therefore seen by Argentina as a remnant of colonialism rather than a legitimate basis for sovereignty. For these reasons, Argentina maintains that the islands are an integral part of its national territory and that their sovereignty should be resolved through peaceful negotiations.

As norwegian, dont think RN need US help with this.

Historically they have proved ability to manage on their own :-)

Unfortunately, the UK does not have the equipment to run long range bombing campaigns, nor a fleet to defend the islands. The UK military has been underfunded for decades. The Royal Navy is a thing of the past. It may list 13 operational ocean going warships and 2 aircraft carriers, but on any given day, only 6 are actually operational. That's it. The RN can not send its aircraft into a war without a defensive vessel escort.

Your interpretation of aquired rights is deficient. The UK right of possession was previously established and is recognized under longstanding agreements on the integrity of borders. Your hero Trump is encouraging an Argentinian leader to start a war. Not particularly bright.

Broke Britain: UK Military Forced to Cancel Training Exercises to Save Cash

British army told to stop non-essential training exercises to save money

A defence source said the plans mean not doing what he called "nice to have training" - like large live fire exercises and rehearsing platoon attacks in UK training areas like Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire and Sennybridge in Wales.

It is understood planned exercises that were due to take place that are now cancelled include one involving the Royal Tank Regiment conducting live fire drills in Wales and a separate exercise involving tanks and Apache helicopters.

“Faced with a choice between spending on military training and spending on benefits… Labour chooses more benefits,” Conservative Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Helen Whately remarked.

They're cutting back on "nice to have" training that could be real handy if they have to defend or even invade the Falklands. Live fire drills, platoon attacks, tanks and helicopters... Those would be handy skills, eh?

We'll never know what the US would have done if the kerfuffle started going a different way.

As I recall, strategic ambiguity has been the US policy through many administrations. Nothing new here. If the US said we'd back either side, they may do stupid stuff that they otherwise wouldn't. Besides, strategic ambiguity doesn't cheez off either side.

It's only the fact that it's Trump that's upsetting the lefties.

Ok, I'll give you another go because you only answered half the question (the true half).

You said: And one of their parties (very) recently called for defunding military training in favor of "more benefits".

So I ask you again, who "very recently called for defunding the military in favour of "more benefits"?"

I didn't read anything about the cuts being for "more benefits".
