Trump Hints US May Not Back UK Over Falklands

Donald Trump has indicated that the United States might not step in to support the UK in a future conflict with Argentina over the Falkland Islands.

In an interview with GB News, the US president said Britain had not helped him during America’s war with Iran. He suggested that context would shape whether Washington came to London’s aid in the event of another dispute with Buenos Aires.

Trump Remarks on Potential Falklands Row

Trump’s comments build on earlier remarks in which he said the US could review its neutral position on the islands’ sovereignty if the UK did not raise defence spending.

Iran War Context and Requests for Ships

Trump told GB News that when the first war took place “a long time ago”, he had watched developments closely and said Britain “comported yourselves very well”.

He then turned to the current conflict with Iran, saying the UK had not been there to support him, despite later adding that US military efforts did not require help.

He said he asked Nato and also raised the issue with then-UK leader Keir Starmer, asking why additional vessels were not sent. Trump said Starmer told him that no ships were available, which he described as “pretty sad”.

Trump also argued that Nato had not been involved even though, he said, many Nato countries rely on a large share of their oil imports moving through the Strait of Hormuz. He added that the US was handling the situation itself.

Sovereignty Dispute, UK Response and Referendum

The Falklands remain at the centre of a sovereignty dispute between Britain and Argentina, more than 40 years after fighting between the two countries in 1982.

A British task force forced Argentine forces out after they landed on the islands to back a territorial claim. The war lasted 74 days and resulted in the deaths of 255 British military personnel, three islanders and 649 Argentine military personnel.

Argentina and the UK both continue to dispute sovereignty, with previous US administrations having formally recognised Britain’s de facto administration of the islands while not taking a formal position on sovereignty.

The latest US remarks come as Argentinian President Javier Milei is scheduled to make a televised address on Thursday night about what he calls his country’s “historic” claim.

In separate comments, the UK government said Falkland islanders “are British with a right to determine their own future”. A spokesperson added that islanders have repeatedly said they want to remain a British overseas territory and that the UK’s commitment is “unwavering”.

In a 2013 referendum, residents voted overwhelmingly to remain a British overseas territory, with 99.8% voting in favour and three against.

Hate is pretty strong! Majority from what I see and read is U.S. stop trying to be enforcer of the world this is a good start whether it comes from Trump or not.

It is time as many note we aren't the police of the world this is a good start for the Brits to care for themselves🤣 Oh but it doesn't mean if we don't it is because of hate!🤣

I sure hope Argentina takes back the islands and if needed Trump steps in to help kick the Brits out of the region.

They need to be shipped back to Britain.

Why? The Falklands are entirely populated by people of British heritage, all of whom much prefer British sovereignty to Argentinian, whom they consider a foreign country. Simple proximity does not translate to territorial rights. Plus, what do you mean, if Argentina “takes back” the Falklands (???) -- independent Argentina did have a small military garrison there in (1830?), but if any other country might have a claim, it would be Spain -- and that goes back more than two centuries. (Should Germany be pressing its rights to Breslau and Königsberg?)

It should be entirely up to the people who actually live in the Falklands.

Quite far away from Britain, don't you think? Maybe it is questionable that they went there in the first place.

It's a source of pride for the British, as Argentina is the only Navy they can defeat in the 21st century.

They've been there for generations! What you are proposing is nothing less than ethnic cleansing.

The Falklands represent another instance of British colonization, which is why the British should relinquish control.

No it doesn’t! Colonization implies the takeover of an Indigenous population. The Falklands had none -- there were occasional Spanish garrisons and other European visitors before British settlers began arriving. This is not a case of colonization.

Be careful. Trump could offer them $10 million each to vote to become American. There's what... 3500 of them?

Besides, that's a relatively novel concept for the Empire... Letting the native people decide.

I don't have a dog in this fight (though I'd be rooting for the Brits), but I think the power dynamics have changed since 1982. Remember, the UK was just a few aircraft away from losing even back then. And their military isn't the same. That's what Trump has been harping about.

Ethnic cleansing is accepted in the US these days.

Fair enough the US take sides or support the last time.

yes you are correct, the UK military is not the same. It now has aircraft than can reach the FI and Argentina mainland without stopping anywhere....

How many and what percentage are in working condition? Honest question... I don't claim to know.

I recall that recently, none of the UKs nuclear subs were fit for service and their aircraft carriers had "issues". And one of their parties (very) recently called for defunding military training in favor of "more benefits".

Then you have to juxtapose that on Argentina's advances and numbers over the past 40 years. Again, I don't claim to know. I just know that it's not 1982 and the Iron Lady is long gone.

Have you considered the possibility that he's trying to goad them into spending more to keep their military up to scratch?

The problem is, neither Argentina nor UK have, today, the wherewithal to embark on a war. (Which is why the Royal Navy did not turn up at the Straits of Hormuz to aid their American allies in ridding the world of theocratic terrorists who want to nuke the rest of us.)

If the Falklands are worth protecting, it's not because of a few sheep farmers (who could farm equally well in Scotland or Wales), but because there are some valuable undeveloped oil fields within easy reach of the Malvinas/Falklands. Potentially they are a second North Sea oil field.

It is indeed (though the majority strongly disapprove), but that doesn't mean that ethnic cleansing should also be accepted in the Falklands.
