Trump Says Iran Shot Down Apache Helicopter, Vows Response

President Donald Trump has accused Iran of shooting down a US military helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz and said Washington would respond to the incident, raising fresh concerns about tensions despite a fragile ceasefire between Iran and Israel.

Get today's headlines by email image.png

The US Central Command (Centcom) confirmed that two crew members aboard the downed Apache helicopter were rescued and were unharmed.

“There were two pilots involved, both are safe and uninjured,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack.”

US officials have not announced what form any response might take. However, military action could threaten efforts to preserve the ceasefire that followed recent exchanges of fire between Israel and Iran.

Iran has not immediately commented on Trump’s accusation. One US official told CBS News that it remained unclear whether the aircraft was intentionally targeted.

Iranian media appeared to acknowledge the incident but stopped short of claiming responsibility. The semi-official Mehr News Agency reported that Iran had not taken responsibility for the helicopter’s loss.

Rising Regional Tensions

The incident comes as Israeli forces continued strikes across southern Lebanon. Tehran has warned that further Israeli military action in the area could prompt renewed retaliatory attacks.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said foreign military forces operating near Iran faced ongoing risks from accidents, miscalculations or being caught in crossfire.

“To reduce risk, best solution is for them to leave,” he wrote on X.

Shortly before Trump’s comments, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Iran’s lead negotiator in talks with Washington, issued a warning on social media.

“We prefer the language of diplomacy, but we speak other languages far more fluently. Break your commitments, and we'll switch to what we speak best,” he wrote, adding: “You ride the horse you saddled!”

Ceasefire Under Pressure

Israel and Iran halted direct attacks after exchanging fire over the weekend, the first such confrontation since a truce reached in April.

Trump had urged both countries to “immediately stop ‘shooting’”, saying further hostilities could undermine negotiations aimed at ending the wider regional conflict.

He also expressed optimism about ongoing talks with Tehran, telling reporters that a deal could be reached within “two or three days” and that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen immediately afterward.

The helicopter incident, however, may complicate those diplomatic efforts, particularly if Washington concludes that Iran was directly responsible.

Rescue Operation

Centcom said the rescue took place at 19:33 EDT (23:33 GMT) on Monday.

According to the military, the operation was led by US Naval Forces Central Command and the 82nd Airborne Division, with support from US Air Force and Navy units, including the US Fifth Fleet’s Task Force 59.

A Centcom spokesperson said the pilots were recovered by an unmanned surface vessel operated by Task Force 59, a Bahrain-based unit established in 2024 to integrate unmanned systems into maritime security operations.

The drone transported the crew to another location at sea, where they were subsequently lifted aboard a helicopter and taken to safety.

US Launches Strikes on Iran After Apache Downing

APA.jpg

The United States has launched what it described as "self-defense strikes" against Iran following the downing of a U.S. Apache helicopter earlier this week, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).

CENTCOM said the military operation began at 5 p.m. ET on Tuesday under the direction of President Donald Trump. The strikes were carried out in response to Monday's incident involving the helicopter.

US launches response operation

In a statement posted on social media, CENTCOM said the action was intended as a measured response to the attack.

"The mission is a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression," the command said.

The helicopter was brought down on Monday, prompting a U.S. response less than 24 hours later.

Trump says pilots rescued safely

Earlier on Tuesday, Trump said the two pilots aboard the Apache helicopter had been rescued safely.

No further details were immediately provided about their condition or the circumstances of the rescue.

Officials investigate cause of attack

Two U.S. officials told CBS News that preliminary assessments suggested the helicopter was struck by an Iranian drone.

One official cautioned that investigators had not yet determined whether the strike was deliberate.

Further details about the scope of the strikes or any resulting damage were not immediately available.

The US has no conceivable interests in the Middle East that justify the insane level of involvement in this quagmire.

America has hit two reservoirs in Iran in 'self defence' strikes after the downing of the Apache helicopter. I'm really at a loss to understand what threat they posed to America.

I seem to remember being told that attacks on civilians, or their life support infrastructure, are war crimes.

Iran, and the US, both have an interesting concept of a "ceasefire."

I know this is a very difficult concept for someone like Donnie to understand, but this is known as blowback. You attempt to demolish a nation, you kill mothers and children and retaliation is bound to happen. If anything Iran has shown a great deal of restraint. That won't continue if the imbecile keeps pushing this thing.

Iran’s military, who we’ve ‘completely obliterated’ — or left untouched — depending on the day you ask Trump, shot down an Apache helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz.

So in response the USA attacks radar and missile defense systems that were previously “completely obliterated” or “decimated”.

In response, Iran whose missile program was previously decimated, launches missile attacks on Bharain, Kuwait, and Jordan.

What about the 160 Iranian school girls your army killed, Donnie boy? Any news on that? Probably not going to take responsibility for that, are you?

You don't think Iran has the right to retaliate when two foreign powers attack their country unprovoked and kill their leaders, plus hundreds (thousands?) of innocent civilians, including those school girls?

Nice work Don. You said the war would last two weeks, you said the people would rise up and it would result in regime change, and you said that Iran would agree to a major nuclear deal and surrender all of its enriched material. How much more wrong could you have been and why are your supporters so tolerant of your constant mistakes and ridiculous presumptions and decisions?

U.S. airlines spent more than $6 billion on jet fuel in April, up 78% from a year earlier despite using slightly less fuel, government data released Monday showed. Meanwhile, the airline industry’s top global trade group warned that soaring energy costs could nearly halve profits in 2026.

In an effort to contain costs, airlines around the world have raised airfares and fees, cut other perks and canceled flights or trimmed schedules.

What did the Iranians use, bows and arrows, I could have sworn Trump was insisting quite recently that Iran had no airforce, no air defenses, no navy, no government, and the USA had won?

It is known that Iran has a critical shortage of water to support its population. The aim of targeting existing reservoirs might be to further increase shortage to create public unrest?

Typical of Trump. Start a war and complain when the "enemy" fights back.

Was the chopper in Iranian airspace??? Look at the Apache, long-range missiles and medium-range firing.

Most pilots don't survive a helicopter crash. $40M.

Which is why it is serious 🐂💩to believe that it was "shot down" and that the pilots were "rescued safely" implying that they are safe and injury free. If a Shahed-136 hit the Apache, whether it exploded or not, the crew would be dead. So "no," I don't believe an Apache helicopter was "shot down." It is just being used as an excuse to bomb Iran again.

A little re-invention of the Tonkin bay incident, perhaps? Or how the Germans faked a Polish attack on a German radio station as an excuse to invade Poland?

War with Iran and Ukraine has exposed that powerful countries like USA and Russia are facing serious capability gaps and strategic vulnerabilites that leave it potentially unprepared for modern war especially shortcomings in drone intergration. An Iranian single use attack drone such as the inexpensive Shahed 136 can bring down the most agile target that cost USD40 million without factoring the costs of weapons, spare parts and training which will add another USD40 million to the lost asset. The AH-64 Apache helicopter has demonstrated its vulnerability that the South Korea military has cancelled its procurement. Did Trump said that he will make the US military great again? Looks like another of his infamous failures.

Thank you, I am aware of the reasoning behind the targeting of critical infrastructure such as water supply. The public unrest will be directed at who? Their own country or the people who started the war and is now trying to use the population as pawns?

America does not have a monopoly on 'patriotism'!
