UK Police Told to Act Tough on Anti-Migrant Protests

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has told police chiefs to learn lessons from last weekend’s anti-migrant protests in Dover and Portsmouth, and to use “all powers necessary” when dealing with future demonstrations.

In a meeting on Thursday, Mahmood asked for assurances that plans were in place for forces to respond quickly and effectively to far-right groups she said were seeking to intimidate communities.

Unacceptable Disorder in Dover and Portsmouth

On Saturday, masked protesters brought Dover to a standstill, blocking access to a nationally critical road serving the port. The following day in Portsmouth, around 200 people tried to stop migrants being driven away for processing.

The Home Office said the protests involved “unacceptable disorder”. It added that some protesters were dressed in black and wearing balaclavas, creating what Mahmood described as a “fear factor” and an intent to intimidate residents.

Mahmood said the incidents were different from other protests and needed a response shaped by those circumstances.

Face Coverings Ban Under Review

The BBC understands police leaders are now actively considering recently granted powers that would allow them to ban face coverings in specific areas during protests, in response to the behaviour seen in Dover and Portsmouth.

Mahmood also raised concerns about how quickly police could act when demonstrators tried to disrupt the movement of people and block routes used for processing migrants.

A further incident followed shortly after the Dover protest. Men blocked the only road out of Langstone Harbour near Portsmouth after the RNLI brought 120 migrants ashore.

It is not yet clear whether further demonstrations will be held. In some areas of England, local groups linked to the Patriot Platform umbrella have called for more rallies.

Intelligence, Planning and Public Order Powers

The meeting discussed the emergence of Patriot Platform, with ministers believing it aims to intimidate communities. Mahmood told police chiefs they should make better use of intelligence to improve preparedness ahead of this weekend.

Her comments came after Kent Police previously said it had been aware of a possible demonstration in Dover, but had not “fully assessed” the warning before the port road was brought to a standstill.

During the meeting, Mahmood said the government expected police to use their full powers and to take robust action against any criminal offences.

After the talks, Deputy Chief Constable Andy Mariner, the National Police Chiefs Council lead for public order, said forces were continually assessing and preparing for protests and any impact on public safety. He said this includes working with local forces, specialist teams, communities and partners to ensure support is available when needed.

Mariner added that the priority was to keep people safe, maintain public order and support the right to peaceful and lawful protest, while people committing criminal offences could “expect police action”.

New Rules for Blocking Critical Infrastructure

Major changes to protest law introduced over the last three years allow officers to intervene more quickly where demonstrations block critical national infrastructure, including roads used by ports. Officers can also designate an area as a face mask-free zone for the duration of a protest.

Police chiefs said they have launched an “enhanced and co-ordinated” approach to gathering intelligence in the days ahead.

Hammer them with utter ferocity - go after their money and businesses and destroy them through lawfare. The British people deserve nothing less and it's how many of you to get to stay cheaply in Thailand. The ruling class doesn’t give up power to the great unwashed. Nor should it. The sooner the British rump people accept Mohammed-ism the happier they are going to be ,Inshallah.

I will try and make this simple for you.

I am not disputing what the remit of the RNLI is, or what their website says.

I am disputing, that when it comes to the illegal migrants crossing the Channel, that the RNLI are deploying to rescue people or save lives.

If people need rescued or lives saved, then the French escort vessels are on hand to administer assistance.

Once again, I will ask you to provide a link to a reputable source, showing the RNLI deploying on a rescue or life saving mission in UK waters that involved illegals crossing the English Channel.

Out of the 1000's of dinghies since 2018, you must be able to find at least 1.

I shall make it easier for you. I have supplied links to prove all RNLI launches are in response to a coastguard request for help with a vessel in distress. You have not provided any links to the contrary. Without evidence, you don't have a stance.

Complying with certain operational and legal SOLAS regulations, the RNLI ALB's (All Weather Lifeboat) from Dover, Dungeness, Hastings and Ramsgate were actively involved with the SAR (Search and Rescue) mission after a dinghy with approximately 47 souls on board, suffered structural failure while crossing from France to England.

https://www.gov.uk/maib-reports/flooding-and-partial-sinking-of-an-inflatable-migrant-boat-with-the-loss-of-at-least-8-lives

That's brilliant. You managed to find 1 out of 1000's that have made the crossing.

It would appear that the Dinghy was in French waters when it started getting into trouble ( But they phoned the UK, how odd )

  • the inflatable boat was wholly unsuitable and ill-equipped for the crossing attempt and the occupants’ only method of raising the alarm was via mobile phone

French problem from the off. That French Authorities should have dealt with.

RNLI / Border Farce should never have been near it.

Ok, let's look at last weekends fiasco

  1. The Rejection: Port authorities broadcast via open marine VHF radio that the Port of Southampton and Portsmouth Harbour denied permission to dock

  2. Legal Threats: Crews were explicitly warned they faced legal action if they attempted to bring the individuals ashore at either location.

3. If there had been a safety of life at sea issue where Southampton was the closest port or if we had received a formal Direction from the authorities then we would have played a role.

No safety of life at sea involved and no formal direction from Authorities. Sounds very much like a unauthorized Taxi run.

Compounded by the fact that the threat of legal action made them divert to a 3rd Port.

Odd decision, for an Organisation operating legally.

The RNLI website is hardly an unbiased source.

It is not going to announce loudly and proudly, that is supplying a maritime taxi service.

If you read the report, the unpowered and partially submerged dinghy drifted towards the English side due to the prevailing tides and currents at the time.

Since their destination was the UK, why on earth would they try and contact anyone on the French side?

Shouldn't be hard.

You've made a few unsubstantiated claims. There aren't any links because what you claimed never happened. That's why there aren't any links.

The most recent claim you made refers to a boat that got into trouble off the coast of Isle of Wight. If your geography is as good as your imagination, you'll know that is not in French waters.

Copy and paste this, and do your own research

FRENCH rescue boats and two helicopters helped a mega-dinghy carrying 140 migrants cross the Channel to a UK beach yesterday.

Five rescue boats escorted the inflatable as it completed the unprecedented 70-mile English Channel crossing on Sunday.

It was a job for the French, Not the RNLI.

I did specify rescuing illegals in UK waters, not a dis tree phone call from French waters.

The report you posted, made that distinction abundantly clear.

Are you struggling ?

I challenged someone, to find one instance of a bona fide RNLI rescue of a migrant dinghy in British Waters

The report you provided, clearly stated that the dinghy had phoned the UK from French waters, requiring assistance.

That assistance should have come from the French, as the dinghy was in French waters.

If you cannot see the distinction. Your issue to deal with.

I always wonder why our countries want them as citizens.

But their countries never want us as citizens.

If there is gonna be no borders, shouldn't it work in both directions?

How come I can't immigrate to India/Pakistan/Syria/Somalia/Nigeria/et al with no paperwork of any kind or even with paperwork?

I'm sure it was because they were all, going back to 2018, NASA scientists, Doctors, Dentist, Engineers etc.

Just a coincidence, that Blair had a big thing about rubbing the rights nose in Diversity, and gave the UK the HRA, making it near on impossible to get rid of anyone who landed on UK shores, by means legal or illegal.

Before anyone gets excited and starts banging on about the dinghies only starting in 2018. The Sangatte Camps and lorries go back to the 90's.

What's interesting is the Labour government shipping all the boats back to France for another trip in a lorry.

Jeez you believe any old nonsense don't you. That excitable man on a bike shows a lorry parked in Dover - it is clearly not in a queue to board a ferry to France. What an absolute moron bike man is.

Screenshot 2026-09-13 at 12.49.45.png

All the boats are collected and taken to a secure shipyard in Dover where they are dismantled, inspected to trace the sources of components (and this information is shared with French authorities) then each and every one of them is destroyed.

Well done anyway for posting one of the most ridiculous conspiracy theories I have seen in a while.

Exactly. It is a small fraction of them that continue the journey and risk their lives to get to the UK.

And no-one denies hotels are being used, not sure what that odd claim is about.
