Two groups exchanged gunfire during a birthday party at Carolyn Crayton Park in Macon, Georgia, leaving 12 teenagers with gunshot wounds, Bibb County Sheriff David Davis said on Sunday.
Early Morning Confrontation
The shooting began shortly after midnight on Sunday, Davis said during a news conference. He said a group of young people went to the park to mark a woman’s 18th birthday after they had been asked to leave a home that had been rented for the celebration several hours earlier.
Davis said another group arrived later and a confrontation followed. He added that the two groups exchanged words, displayed firearms, and then opened fire on each other.
Investigators were working to establish how the groups were connected and what sparked the dispute. Surveillance footage from the park shows gunfire erupting for about 30 seconds while people ran away.
Victims Treated After Being Taken by Car
Deputies arrived at the scene and learned that the injured were taken to a nearby hospital using personal vehicles. Davis said one 19-year-old man, four 18-year-old men, five 17-year-old men and two 18-year-old women were treated for injuries.
He said two of those hurt were in critical condition, while the rest were stable.
Davis also said there was no indication that any of the people injured took part in the shooting.
Investigations Ongoing, Vehicles Seized
No arrests were made immediately, but the sheriff said investigators had identified several people of interest. Deputies impounded four vehicles that had brought some of the victims to hospital, as well as three vehicles left at the park.
Officials interviewed 10 witnesses as part of the probe. Davis said there would be a higher police presence in some locations over the coming days as arrests were made.
Separate Detroit Shooting
On Sunday morning, police in Detroit responded to an incident at an after-hours strip club where an argument led to gunfire. Three people were killed and four others were wounded.
No arrests had been announced at the time of the report.
