US Strikes Iranian Tankers After Carrier Missile Attack

US Central Command said on Saturday morning that U.S. forces struck three Iranian crude oil tankers after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps launched ballistic missiles at an American aircraft carrier and a destroyer.

In a statement, CENTCOM said the operation left two of the tankers permanently inoperable and completely destroyed a third. The command added that neither of the American warships was hit and that no service members were injured, while also saying that the apparent targeting of an aircraft carrier was a notable provocation.

Missile Launches Prompt U.S. Strike Response

CENTCOM said the IRGC’s ballistic missiles were directed at the aircraft carrier and the destroyer. It then described a follow-on action in which U.S. forces engaged the three Iranian tankers. CENTCOM said two vessels were rendered permanently inoperable and the third was destroyed, presenting the tanker strikes as part of its response to the missile launches.

It also emphasised that the U.S. ships involved in the missile attack suffered no damage and that there were no injuries among U.S. personnel, while noting the significance of a carrier being targeted.

Tankers Part of an IRGC “Shadow Network”

CENTCOM said the three Iranian crude oil tankers form part of a multibillion-dollar “shadow network” that funds the IRGC and its regional proxies. In the same statement, it said Iran had no means by which to defend the tankers that were targeted.

The command’s account linked the shipping assets to the flow of money that supports the IRGC and activities carried out through its regional allies, and it said the vessels were therefore vulnerable to U.S. action.

Economic Cost and Further Deterrence

CENTCOM framed the strikes as an effort to impose an economic cost in response to attacks on U.S. ships. Adm. Brad Cooper, the CENTCOM commander, said the message to the IRGC was clear: if it fired on two American ships, the United States would raise the economic price by taking out three Iranian vessels.

Cooper said the United States would not hesitate to defend American forces and that, if necessary, it would go further in destroying what CENTCOM described as Iran’s limited and exposed oil fleet.

That'll work, and take away the subtle ones. The problem if that happens is Iran steps up it's terror violence worldwide.

You do realize USA government (not people) has been shown to be the biggest supporter of terror groups and it has created a few as well.

You’re wrong. Iran alliances with Hamas, Houthi, Hezbollah and militias in Syria and Iraq are a regionally ( not worldwide) defense strategy that give Iran a buffer zone and leverages far beyond its borders against Israel and US.

This "Axis of Resistance" serves as a forward defense strategy. Israel and US have been trying to undermine a regime fall for the last 4 decades.

It takes a lot of critical thinking to look back at history and evaluate where things went off course. Political history is full of complex alliances, unintended consequences, and intelligence failures that look very different in hindsight than they did in the moment.

When you look at major geopolitical shifts, foreign policy decisions are often made based on the immediate threats of that specific era, which can lead to trusting factions or leaders that later turn against those same interests. Past presidents funded leaders they trusted, and in hindsight, made mistakes.

Look up what Iran has done as far as terrorism through the years, and directly at the US and other countries. You have no idea how these people think, and it's never been in the best interests of their own people but themselves and their agendas. Okay, this is what happened.

Historical Background

  • 1979 Revolution: Iran overthrew the U.S.-backed Shah and established an Islamic Republic, ending decades of close ties with Washington and Jerusalem.

  • Hostage Crisis: The 444-day U.S. hostage crisis in Tehran caused a permanent break in formal diplomatic relations.

  • Policy Shift: Washington and its allies shifted from containment to active economic and political isolation over the following decades.

Methods Used Over the Decades

  • Economic Sanctions: The U.S. and allies placed strict embargoes on Iranian oil, banking, and trade to weaken the state economy.

  • Cyber Warfare: The joint U.S.-Israeli operation known as Stuxnet sabotaged Iran's nuclear enrichment centrifuges around 2010.

  • Covert Operations: Intelligence agencies have supported dissident groups, monitored military sites, and disrupted covert nuclear and missile supply chains.

  • Regional Pressure: Both nations work to counter Iran's backing of regional militias in Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq, and Syria.

Of course most of us want the US to stop beating their wife

(the rest of the world) but do not want to see it's demise after it stops , we want to see it reformed into a respectful, cooperative world wide citizen instead of the bully it is now.

Exactly. 4 decades of undermining Iran’s existence and inviting the tyrannical and overthrown Shah to US hardened Iran’ s resolve to protect their sovereignty.

Partially agree. USA support is always about ensuring its own interests are advanced. As such millions of innocent people half way across the world have been killed because of it. That can equate to terrorism. In the past they did a reasonable job isolating USA citizens from their covert and overt operations but increased accessibility to information by the general population is enabling people to see and judge for themselves.

Let me get this straight...

We won on the first day.

Iran's navy was defeated.

They have no ballistic missiles left.

Even if they did, the IRGC couldn't hit American ships.

This could never possibly happen.

Right! 😄

Would you like chicken?

Because we're out of beef.

And millions more have been saved. It's the US's constant quest for peace, and that comes at a cost, as it has in every country since time began. No terrorists, little problems. The US is a main reason most everyone around the world is free. Those countries that aren't free have those maniacs in charge. Yes, governments have their own selfish agendas. Yours and mine. Money rules. Power corrupts, but we keep voting them in with the same hope all our ancestors had a long time ago. When will the world have peace? Only when things change in every home.

What a load of rubbish !!!

The US in it's 250 years has only had 16 years when it has not been at war with some one or a lot other.

A recent article published in the Lancet estimates millions dead just from the economic sanctions imposed on various countries around the world by the US bully boy/world policeman/terrorist state.

The US needs to butt out of everyone else's business and get back to minding its own..that's what voters thought they were getting with Trump but alas those Epstein Kompromat

To you it's rubbish. To the rest of the educated world it's a fact. How many wars has the US started? How many weren't necessary?

War of 1812 against Great Britain

  1. Mexican-American War (1846) against Mexico

  2. Spanish-American War (1898) against Spain

  3. World War I (1917) against Germany and Austria-Hungary

  4. World War II (1941) against Japan, Germany, and other Axis. 36 major conflicts and hundreds of actions since 1775, many which were also necessary.

All necessary. You might want to research more and see how many people have been killed where the US wasn't involved. Look next door to Myanmar and Cambodia. Look into Africa. Take Trump out of your thinking because that creates prejudice against Americans. Who helped the terrorists? Former presidents who trusted them. If you haven't noticed, the US is all countries on earth in one place, which is a major reason they do get involved. Sometimes they shouldn't have, like Vietnam , and should have ended sooner, but when terrorists hit the US's people, they're going to pay. Also necessary. When they hit your country, you might understand, unless they already have, and you don't. Who's side are you on?

How else can peace be achieved when people want you dead? Terrorists are extreme radical thinkers, and have no business on earth. The US defended itself against England. Scotland defended itself against England. Many countries defended themselves against Rome. The US's involvement is why Germany and Japan aren't in charge of the world. When you want peace and the other side wants you dead, you kill them, period. Then you can have peace, as it isn't in their agenda.

Are things deteriorating inside of Iran that they feel pressured enough to take it to the next level?

Well good thing monday is labor day....the market is closed.

Just how many ways did Trump and his minions sabotage American foreign policy, diminish America's future prospects, and empower America's adversaries with this ridiculous Forever War in Iran?

This hasn't been talked about much but it may be one of the most consequential revelations of the US's war on Iran: the fact that China has effectively replaced OPEC as the global price setter for oil.

It isn't me saying it but Igor Sechin, CEO of Rosnef, the largest oil producer in Russia - itself a member of OPEC+ (https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/russias-sechin-says-china-not-opec-calls-shots-global-energy-markets-2026-09-04/)

And Sechin isn't alone in saying so: many Western analysts - such as Javier Blas, Bloomberg's top energy analyst - are essentially saying the same thing (see https://x.com/RnaudBertrand/status/2067153947257930227?s=20)

How so? Well, China has demonstrated during the Iran war an extraordinary ability to simply walk away from the market and slash its oil imports by millions of barrels per day - during a months on end.

At peak, they slashed imports by 5.5 million barrels per day, the equivalent of India's total consumption. They can, quite literally, switch an entire India's worth of demand on and off, at will.

This is mainly because they have immense strategic oil reserves, estimated to stand at 1.4 billion barrels

(https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=67504) - 4 times bigger than the US's (the world's second largest inventory).

In a nutshell, prices being, as everyone knows, set by supply and demand, China now controls the demand side in a bigger way than OPEC controls the supply side. So, as Sechin puts it, they now call the shots.

All the more given that OPEC is weaker than it's ever been with the recent loss of the UAE, the largest producer ever to walk out.

This is what effectively saved the world's economy during the Iran war: analyst after analyst predicted that the closure of Hormuz would make oil prices skyrocket to stratospheric levels, like $200-$300 a barrel.

However, Hormuz is still closed and prices sit at... $91 a barrel, after briefly peaking at around $110 in April.

(https://www.macrotrends.net/1369/crude-oil-price-history-chart). China almost single-handedly made this happen with their flexibility on the demand side: what Hormuz made the world lose in supply, China basically cut in demand, which stabilized prices.

Long story short, as the saying goes: "never let a good crisis go to waste." China used this one to effect a friendly takeover of the most powerful cartel on earth - without even joining it.
