Volkswagen Approves Plan For 50,000 More Job Cuts

Volkswagen’s supervisory board has approved a further plan to cut 50,000 jobs as part of what the German carmaker describes as its largest restructuring in almost nine decades.

The decision raises the total number of roles the group plans to remove by 2030 to 100,000, after Volkswagen said in March that it would eliminate 50,000 positions.

Restructuring Board Approval

The group, which includes Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche and Skoda, also said it is reviewing how its workforce and production capacity should change as markets shift and technology evolves.

In a statement on Thursday, chief executive Oliver Blume called the job cuts a “strong signal” for the company’s future, saying Volkswagen was “taking responsibility for our entire workforce”. Blume had previously said in July that the company was looking to make additional cuts.

Further Cuts Through 2030

Volkswagen said it would require a group-wide workforce adjustment of approximately 50,000 positions, including management roles. It said the changes are intended to safeguard competitiveness as demand shifts and the industry moves towards new technologies.

Shares in the company rose by about 7% in Frankfurt on Friday morning.

Model and Cost Changes

Alongside the staffing plan, Volkswagen said it intends by 2035 to cut the number of models it produces by 50% and reduce the complexity of its vehicle offering by 75%.

The company said it will prioritise the “most compelling vehicles” and produce more of each model, moves it expects will help lower costs.

Volkswagen added that a “fundamental adjustment” of global workforce capability is necessary to protect competitiveness.

German Plants Under Review

The carmaker is also considering the future of four German plants: Emden, Zwickau, Hanover and Neckarsulm. Volkswagen said in those locations production capacity exceeds demand.

“Alternative uses for these plants are being assessed,” the company said.

Profit Pressure and Competitive Threats

Volkswagen has been under pressure from falling profits after sales weakened and competition intensified, particularly from Chinese carmakers.

The firm has seen demand slide in China, where Volkswagen had previously sold large volumes. In the United States, sales have also fallen, partly because of tariffs on car imports introduced under Donald Trump’s administration.

Chinese manufacturers have expanded aggressively by rolling out new technologies and benefiting from lower production costs than competitors. In recent years, firms such as BYD have reported sharp sales growth in markets including the UK, the European Union and parts of South East Asia.

Workforce and Union Response

As of 2025, Volkswagen employed more than 660,000 people worldwide. Its brands also include Seat, Bentley and Lamborghini.

Christianne Benner, president of Europe’s largest industrial union IG Metall and deputy chair of Volkswagen’s Supervisory Board, said the company had “fought hard for good solutions” to tackle what she described as a “crisis situation”.

After working in pre-Tiananmen China for about 10 years, where the bulk of my work force in the wastelands of Qinghai were either forced labour, criminals or otherwise CPP undesirables in forced exile, I really don't give a flying <deleted> for your human rights pearl clutching.

Alex Pretti wasn't driving a vehicle.

No. That is what ICE does.

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo wasn't even a suspect when ICE capped him through the door of his white van while driving to work in Houston.

ICE are not cooperating and keep coming up with one fanciful story after another, all being easily countered by eye-witness accounts and cctv footage. They even stated that Araujo weaponised his vehicle and tried to run over an ICE operative, while their own statements subsequently show that the four ICE operatives involved in the action never, ever left their vehicles in what was a pursuit in unmarked vehicles. No ICE operatives had bodycam and their own vehicle dashcam footage is "unavailable". They even tried to deport the eyewitnesses. In an effort to end this stream of lies and obfuscation, the Harris County DA is going to take this to a Grand Jury.

Correct the goof wasn’t driving a vehicle.

Attempting to shoot a federal officer will result in the same outcome.

He should have gone to work that day. Oh, did he even have a job?

Araujo was going to work when ICE shot him. The lame-assed ICE warriors then pointed to an unknown white substance found in the back of the van, suggesting he was running drugs. Tests showed the white substance was actually electrolyte powder, because even hard-working Hispanics need to stay hydrated in the hot Texas summer sun.

Why did he try to run over the officer? If he was so innocent as you suspect a quick question and answer period would have resulted in him “down the road “.

He was responsible for his own destiny. Something liberals have an extremely hard time believing. ALWAYS someone else’s fault.

Lets get back to the topic ...remember a few years ago people were saying

Chinese cars were crap ,even dangerous ,just look at them now ,better

designed than cars made in the West and you get far better accessories

for your $ , and about half the price no wonder the USA is keeping them out ,

they would decimate US car makers , and Europeans too look at VW...

I though capitalism was about free choice and may the best company win...

Pay attention you trolling dolt. Aruajo was driving his van. ICE pulled up alongside and fired the lethal shot through Aruajo's driver side door as he was driving. No ICE operative stood in front of anyone's weaponised vehicle.

The only thing that ICE have admitted to was mistaken identity. They even tried to pass the buck on shooting the wrong guy in the wrong van on being given "poor intelligence" from Texas DPS. This was quietly recanted after Texas State Troopers denied that had provided ANY intelligence to ICE.

So you are a Hispanic guy, driving to work in Houston and some masked guys with no visible badges drive up alongside you in unmarked SUV's, point a gin and demand you pull over. Keep in mind that you are in a Hispanic guy in Texas.

Oh dear, do try and control your temper. It’s only a forum.

It doesn’t fit in with your/leftists core values.

Or does it?

It does look like someone is upset on behalf of the forum's latest pearl-clutching dullard @JonnyF. That's extremely woke of you.

Or maybe those pearls were the ones that you gave to @JonnyF ?

You're so misguided you think Asians making your fake stolen IP Porsche on behalf of the CCP for 15 dollars a day is funny.

I'm not sure if its ignorance or genuinely evil.
