I live in the area but in a two story house and not a flat.

Has it changed that much so fast? Last time I passed through it - about 2 years ago - on my way to buy handicraft in Baan Tawai, I couldn't find anyone in Hang Dong "downtown" area that could speak anything but Thai (not to mention, getting a decent burger or genuine farlang egg).

Some of the geezers coming around don't have any other option ... By the way, it's still possible to obtain some two-year old genuine Baan Tawai antiques from my shop, which can save the hazards associated with having to pass through the Hang Dong Farlang Ghetto.

This 'Farlang' thing is out of control. Is it the new Farang Lanna dialect ? I'm doubting so, and am also embarrassed someone from the other boards might come into the CM one and see it like "Oh yeah, Far-lang, we always say Far-lang up here." With all respect to Britts n etc, the 'r' thing is only trouble. Good example is the spelling of the word 'Galare' which so often gets pronounced by lost foreigners say, searching for their 'Galare Hotel' asking tuk tuk dirvers to get them to the 'Gallery Hotel' because there's a frikking 'r' in the middle of it. The Thais don't know what we're saying unless we read THai 'cause the word is "galae," just as the word is either Farang or Falang, whichever you choose. Transliteration is trouble yes, but putting extra consonants in is double trouble.

And too far-flung for this Far-lang.

And yikes! I'm actually siding with Blinky too...

As I read this topic, I'm looking at the map of Oklahoma City, where "Irish Flats" once was the home of many poor Irish who migrated there, on the flat part of the river bed, prone to flooding. Hang Dong itself is fairly flat. There are enough farang there that the new supermarket complex is Kad Farang. Maybe there are kid farang there, too.

Some of the Koolpunt Ville subdivisions (which are numerous and monstrous) have a high percent of farang. Like ten percent. I am sure I spotted an entire gaggle of Mennonites there this week, with the whitest faces, women in head coverings, men with facial hair, nearly Amish. There are also Koreans in Hang Dong, perhaps a hundred.

If there really were so many farang in Hang Dong, Mike wouldn't have had a hang dog expression on his face when he closed his new burger joint.

Definition of dork is "a whale's penis." I have been called worse Blinky. A lot worse. But thankfully "Humorless" is not one of them.

For the record: I did not intend this to be an insult or a slander to anyone living (or not living) in Hang Dong.

In the past several months, I could not help but note that 2 out of 3 farangs that I have encountered here in Chiang Mai claimed their residence as Hang Dong. It gave me the impression that there must be quite a population of us "foreigners" living there. So I started to think of a nice nickname for Hang Dong to which I might refer to it, just like New York City is called "The Big Apple" or New Orleans is referred to as "The Big Easy."

"Farang Flats" because of the high proportion of "Farang" living there and "Flats" attributed to the topography of the land at that location. "Farang Forest" didn't make any sense (not any real forest near there), plus it just did not sound as good as "Farang Flats."

Most of the expats can't pronounce even Singha (sing) or Chang (chaaang) correctly and you want them to get the differences between Farung/Falang and Galare/Gallery?

But, you know, it's more of my rebellion toward a silly new spelling and throwing some more information out there as to how to handle Thai. I know we've got a quite a few people who speak Thai well or at least make an effort. The extra 'r' thing in Farlang is silly to this this Chairng Mair guy and should be stamped out. This whole line of thought though is better addressed in many of the language forum topics so I'll give it a rest.

Fun post retardeal.

There are not only frequent typos by those of us who do not use spell-checkers but the difficulties of translating Thai into another alphabet, as evidenced on the many maps of Thailand that present spellings of city names in virtually every imaginable variety.

I have a totally tin ear and my Thai wife had to carefully explain to me that Thais do not pronounce the 'R' like an 'L' but sorta roll it a bit like the French but much more subtly. Even Thais do not say "Falang".

In another forum I was challenged to come up with a definition for the word "farnag" from another poster's typographical error and I came up with:

Far-nag n. Farangs who annoy by constant scolding, complaining, or urging.

I hereby stand by my own definition (copyright applied for) and have every intention of using it to refer to those of us who are scolding, complaining crabasses.

Learn to live with it, folks...
