george Posted October 13, 2006 Share Posted October 13, 2006 Thai Rak Thai Party gets new leader BANGKOK: -- Chaturon Chaisang has decided to take the post of acting Thai Rak Thai (TRT) party leader after former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra resigned as the party leader earlier this month. Mr. Thaksin's resignation followed the September 19 military coup d'etat in which his government was deposed. In a press conference Friday, Mr. Chaturon said that he was ready to take the post. He will take office on October 16. The new TRT party chief said the first thing he will do is to officially inform the Election Commission of Mr. Thaksin's resignation and warn former executives to submit their lists of assets and liabilities to the Election Commission. Speaking about party policies, he vowed that the party would adhere to democratic rule and follow political path of reconciliation. The Thai Rak Thai Party has to obey the martial law imposed after the coup d'tat which forbid the party to resume political activities or political gathering. Society won't worry, Mr. Chaturon said, as long as the Thai Rak Thai party conforms to the principle of democracy, avoids confrontation, and adopts a peaceful path. Asked if Mr. Thaksin will resume his post in the future, Chaturon said he has not had an opportunity to speak with Mr. Thaksin since September 19. Physically gone yes no doubt, effectively gone, I will leave that up to the military. When they say he is gone that is when it should be put to rest. He takes a serious risk of joining his 3 former EC buddies in jail by coming back. His position in government may have changed but not his tactics. He is most certainly up to something here, perhaps trying to buy off judges or whatever. The military is wise to keep Thaksin away until he has been properly declawed and de-toothed. He's not surrounded by his coterie of Thai toadies and sycophants who wai his every move. Nobody gives a rat's ass about him in London. His London neighbors probably point to him as he returns to his flat from the corner takeaway curry shop and exclaim, "There goes that funny little Oriental man who speaks such stilted English.
