Thailand in Olympics-era hockey record

Changchun, China (BangkokPost.com, Agencies)

Kazakhstan beat Thailand 52-1 to wrap up their ruthless march through the group stage of the Asian Games ice hockey tournament yesterday. A search of records indicated the game was the highest scoring match in Olympics history.

Kazakhstan is currently ranked 11th in the world in the sport. Thailand is unranked.

Other tops teams have taken it easy against the amateurs from warmer countries but the pre-tournament favourites scored 17 goals in the first period, 20 in the second and eased up only slightly to score 15 in the last third of the game.

The scoring was spread fairly evenly through the roster and Oleg Yeremeyev took the biggest haul with seven goals inside the first two periods as Kazakhstan added this rout to a 38-0 drubbing of the UAE.

Pongsak Phiewklam and Jason Cotsmire, who shared goaltending duties for the Thais, also stopped 39 shots between them and Thailand at least prevented the shutout when Arthit Thamwongsin hit the target after 47.15.

Kazahstani goalie Sergey Ogureshnikov ended up with a poor saves percentage - just four of five shots by the Thais.

Kazakhstan go through to the next round as comfortable winners of group B having scored 90 goals to just the one against.

The highest score in an NHL game was when the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Quebec Bulldogs 16-3 in 1920.

In the 1924 Winter Olympics at Chamonix, France, Canada defeated Czechoslovakia 30-0, Sweden by 22-0, Switzerland 33-0 and Great Britain 19-2.

At the Winter Olympic Games in St Moritz, Switzerland in 1928, Canada earned a gold medal in hockey when the University of Toronto Varsity Grads romped to victory, winning all three games by scores of 11-0, 14-0, and 13-0.

Thailand scores but still loses 52-1 in Asian Games ice hockey game

CHANGCHUN, China - Kazakhstan put 52 goals past Thailand in Asian Winter Games hockey action Monday, but the goal that brought the most cheer came from the outgunned Thais.

The Asian ice hockey little guys went into the game knowing they were going to lose to tournament favourite Kazakhstan, but an opportune goal seven minutes into the third period was celebration enough in the 52-1 loss. * Y E A H ! ! *

The hero was forward Arthit Thamwongsin, who jumped on a rebound off the boards to slam a shot past Kazakhstan goaltender Sergey Ogureshnikov.

Up to that point, the highlight for the Thais had been when defenceman Terani Harnnarujchai bodychecked one of the linesmen into the boards.

"They are just an outstanding team," Thailand's American coach Michael Rolanti said of Kazakhstan, which competed in the Turin Winter Olympics.

"I think it was a good game for us because we did not give up."

Rolanti is a former college player at Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., who was managing a chain of English schools in Bangkok when he was asked to help coach the national team.

"We only have about 40 guys in the whole country to pick from," said Rolanti.

The Thais were outshot 97-7, with six of those shots coming in the third period as the Thais managed a few chances, including one breakaway which was stopped by Ogureshnikov.

Rolanti said there are only two ice rinks in Thailand, which lost 4-0 to the United Arab Emirates in its opening game.

Kazakhstan's leading scorer was Oleg Yeremeyev, with seven goals.

Kazakhstan also had an easy time in its first game, beating the UAE 38-0, and is expected to meet Japan in the final Saturday.

Hong Kong is another tournament minnow, coached by former Vancouver Canuck David Saunders.

His players range in age from 19 to 49-year-old Samuel Wong, the captain and goaltender.

Saunders played for the Canucks in 1987-88, worked on Wall Street and set up an emerging markets trading desk in Hong Kong.

While there, he became an investor in a company building Hong Kong's first full-size hockey rink, which opens this summer. That led local sports officials to ask him to coach the team.

...and now on a happy note, the WOMEN ice hockey team WON over Hong Kong!!!

as a side observation, why is it that the women always seem to do better than the men in Olympic competition for Thailand??

Anyway... it's almost buried at the end of this report:

China hopeless for women's ice hockey title at Winter Asiad

China saw no hope of clinching the women's ice hockey title with straight losses in the round-robin matches at the 6th Asian Winter Games here on Friday.

The Chinese women, ranked atop in Asia and seventh in the world, took an early lead at 6:06 but were overtaken by Kazakhstan and lost it 3-1.

The Kazaks, second-ranked in Asia, will face Japan in the final round, which decides the winner.

In the men's tournament, DPR Korea eased past the United Arab Emirates 9-2 to lock the fifth position. In the match for the seventh place, Kuwait trounced Malaysia 10-2 while Thailand edged out Hong Kong, China 4-3 to settle on the ninth position.
