White House Welcomes Guantanamo Ruling

Featured Replies

White House welcomes Guantanamo ruling :o

I am speechless....and apologise for my anger, but this is something beyond Human Rights...worldwide!*

This could happen to you and me.....

" The White House has welcomed a court ruling that foreign terrorist suspects being held at Guantanamo Bay do not have the right to challenge their detention in US courts.

A federal appeals court has upheld a piece of legislation which bars Guantanamo detainees from challenging their detention in the American civil courts. "

full article here:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200702/s1852867.htm

* there are cases about totally innnocent people -in Germany and the UK- who were kidnapped by the US, held in Guantanamo prison for years, released, without any excuses, and send back to their homecountries without any explanation (or compensation) by the US.

Yes, I am angry.

Human rights?....my _ss!

Well, blame terrorists for starting this 'situation' we're in... :o

Congratulations with your 8000th post Boon Mee!

You're right with blaming terrorists. That doesn't mean that suspects don't have rights.

Just imagine for 2 or 3 minutes (close your eyes and think of it) that you are captured/kidnapped, somewhere on this planet....and you are innocent...put in jail for 5 years....and you do not have any right to appeal.

It's the most horrific scenario anyone could ever think or dream about (bad dream that is).

Are you saying the terrorists are responsible for Bush's policies?....I guess this tells us who you really think runs the country.....maybe you should start a renaissance of the John Birch Society....are you already a member?

Well, blame terrorists for starting this 'situation' we're in... :o

Amazing, isn't it? Americans fund the IRA and support their terrorism campaign on the British mainland for decades. Celebrity tours for Sinn Fein leaders & meetings with US politicians. Good ol' boys in the pubs in Boston, waxing lyrical about the homeland (which most had never set foot on) & singing "freedom" songs. That's all great, isn't it? I presume the IRA were "freedom fighters", not terrorists, because the US supported them? Then the US is targetted (a tragedy, yes, definitely) and suddenly we have "The War on Terror", dubious wars, and measures such as these. And we get such gems as "blame the terrorists". What happened to "blame the terrorists" when our shops were getting bombed at Christmas? When our pubs were getting bombed? Our train stations? Had we brought in measures, such as Lao Pao is highlighting, at that time, imagine the outcry of human rights abuses by US politicians! Must be fabulous to be the world's policeman, judge and lord & master... :D

So, while we blame them we will give up the civilization we have fought so hard for? America is dead.

Lets Not forget who Funded Pol Pot, Who trained Sadam, Godaffi the list goes on and on and on...

In other words: the terrorists have already won.

Lets Not forget who Funded Pol Pot, Who trained Sadam, Godaffi the list goes on and on and on...

God Bless America..

Lets not take the distaste for what the dumbarse in the Whitehouse and his gang of bootlick followers have done and turn it into bashing the whole country. They, along with Britain, and Canada liberated much of Europe in WW2, gave us blues, jazz, rock, coca cola, the internet, etc, etc.....

Besides. Most yanks are nice people.

Ladies & Gents:

let me put this straight: I was (like all of us) utterly shocked and crying when I saw the live footage of 9/11. One of the most -if not the most- dramatic terror attack in the world since mankind.

That the US counter attacked is understandable; that they 'arrested' and 'kidnapped' a lot of people is also -because of the extreme circumstances- understandable.

But, it's not to be accepted that the US-administration can and is acting as a 'judge' whether or not people (who are terrorist suspects) have Human Rights or not.

The same US-administration does not accept or obey -international- rules about misbehaviour of soldiers; meaning that those 'misbehaving' soldiers, on soil, other than the US, cannot and will not be put to justice, in countries asking/demanding for that misbehaviour.

The same US-administration will decide that for themselves.

The US, the most democratic country in the world ?

I agree; It's not the 'people'...it's the US-administration.

Perhaps you could find the time to provide something more elaborate

than the above mantra in response to November Rain's remarks on US

attitudes to the provos' terrorist campaign?

Interesting that president Bill had such a positive effect on the resolution

of that conflict.

Maybe president Hilary will be able to repair some of the damage to the

world and the standing of the US therein.

:D

I was in awe, but certainly not surprised or crying when I witnessed the events of 9-11.

In fact I was in Germany at the time and the truth is most people though <deleted> the USA get a taste of your own medicine.

Even now I find it hard to find a non American who feels a great pity for those events, shock yes, but sympathy no.

A lot of the reasoning was US foreign policies, the obvious economies of truth used at the time and the subsequent fact that 9-11 has been used to kill a disproportionate amount of peole in 'retaliation', leading arguably to humanity being sent over an abyss and led to draconian laws in virtualy every NATO country in the name of freedom, at the same time actually taking away freedoms and human rights that took the last 250 years to establish.

I apologise if my stance offends you, the events of 9-11 were a horrific crime.

The victims of that event and Americans in general are very much worthy of respect.

The punishment however, that we all must suffer, is not fitting and it does and will affect us all as is shown in the OP.

Many laws introduced into Northern Ireland during the war there, were later introduced into mainland Britain, restricting civil liberties and tightening state control, in fact some may say that some of the reasoning to the prolonged and illogical war in Northern Ireland was that it was a good testing ground for laws and procedures that would have been impossible to implement directly into the UK without an alterior motive.

That might require independant thought. Don't hold your breath. :D

I worked at WT7. I had many friends who died in WT1&2, and I take real big offence at anyone who even infers that it was a deserved act.

So that's where the expression "sick as a parrot" really came from.

That's understandable Jet, my sympathy to you for the loss of your friends.

I take offence to the hundreds of thousands of innocent lives that have been ended in the name of freedom by the US and UK governments and the Western media perspective that the life of a US citizen is of more value than the life of any other human on this planet.

This topic isn't about terrorism or who's fault it is, it's about the 'leading country for freedom' (sic) choosing to stand outside anything in regards to a international court while taking it upon themselfs to disregard anything regarding human rights or agreed documents for those it chooses it fit to do so with.

If this is the best we can do...then the terrorist have already won.

Or the "dark influences" who are now able to chip away at liberties hard

gained over centuries in the name of "national security".

Good News - keep the terrorists out of the action. :o

Who are you talking about?

Naturally the ones locked up in GITMO.

Does anyone know if there is any other country/government in the world, apart from the US, kidnapping people in other countries than their own, fly them to secret foreign locations, torture them and if innocent, release them after many years, without any explanation or compensation ?

It happened in the UK, in Italy, in Germany, amongst others.

Italy and Germany are seeking justice now, trying to bring CIA agents to trial who were involved in these kidnappings.

You think the US will 'deliver' these agents?

Can anyone imagine EU- or Asian- (Thai-) secret agents, kidnapping people in the US, fly them to secret locations outside the US and put them in secret jails for years....? :o:D

The Bush-administration would not be amused, would they?

LaoPo - yes many countries do this sort of thing. Unfortunately the public never knows about it. :o

China/NK come to mind. :D

Any rate its pretty laffable especially when lot of the countries where these lads were snatched, were directly involved with the snatching. Yanks couldnt have done it without their help I'm afraid. So in the end they have to look at themselves in the mirror before judging anyone else. Standard Black OPS - you'd be surprised how murky it gets. :D

I agree; I should have said: 'democratic' countries; China and North Korea aren't exactly democratic.
