Online price Bt859,000 but when my girlfriend calls, they say Bt899,000.

Not a little guy, a big Bangkok dealer advertising on his website and the www.one2car.com platform.

Now this isn't some VAT scam, though they might try and say it is VAT as 899/859 isn't a 7% increase.

Also, car dealers work on the VAT margin scheme, not absolute. So if they buy at Bt800,000 and sell at Bt859,000 then their vat is 7% on their profit, not 7% on the total.

In this case, they deleted the car from their website for a day or two and then put it back with a different web address.

Maybe a mistake on their site. You know thais have a great attention to detail when it comes to website management

Not true. They pay 7% VAT on the full sales price.

In several western countries an advertised price is called " an invitation to treat ". It protects say a retailer who inadvertantly had an item in his shop window but listed at an incorrect price. He is then not legally obliged to sell you that item at the listed incorrect price. I do not know if thai have same commercial law.

All dealers try to sale their cars to potential buyers at near price tags. They don’t hesitate to use different tricks to bring customers in.

Walk away. Imagine dealing with them if something goes really wrong ...

Works often the other way for me in Hua Hin or Bangkok. When I go ask in any shop or business, they quote a price. When I send my fine Thai maid to ask alone, it often goes down by half !! I usually take my cute maid out when I need to buy furniture or big stuff and make her go in first alone , to chat and get a quote. Saves a lot of money at the end of the day. Of course it won't work all the time and in every shop or dealership or whatever...obviously.

Low ball e’m, offer ฿759,000 and if they don’t like it then walk after you show them their advertised price.

Next time tell them are you a Car Collector or a Car Dealer?

If they want to make a deal okay, otherwise there's hundreds of other dealers wanting to sell a car, up to you.

If they buy in a car for Bt500k, there is already VAT in that Bt500k price, which they have paid out, so that is their input VAT.

When they sell it for Bt600k, that Bt600k includes their output VAT.

What they pay to the revenue is 600k-500k x 7% = 7k

If they didn't work on the margin scheme, they would have to account for the much larger swings of VAT on stock they were carrying which is why certain industries, like cars, travel, etc. work on the margin scheme to help their cashdflow.

Yeah, my initial thoughts but i wanted to see if they simply screwed up or whether they were scamming.

I understand the margin scheme, it is operated in my home country (UK), however, Thailand does not use it.

Remember, dealers don’t buy all their cars from other VAT registered dealers where they can reclaim input VAT.

As I stated, VAT is due on the entire sales price with VAT registered 2nd hand car dealers.

Do some research and you’ll find I am right.

so if she wasn't cute would the price stay the same

When shopping for a vehicle i see this kind of stuff all the time.

Sometimes you can see the same car/truck advertised by different sellers.

It is all done to get commission and the price they ask can differ a lot.

Not only cars,in real estate it is the same.
