April 16, 200719 yr does anybody have some info?True ADSL is OK domestic but international nothing goes. dial-up is also VERY slow internationally. is it a CAT problem? opalhort Cat Telecom's CDMA network on Phuket almost ground to halt this morning - local and international, however all seem well now. Don't you wish you had an internet connection the same as the UK's ? This should make you smile.......http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/low/technology/6552823.stm Edited April 16, 200719 yr by geoffphuket
April 16, 200719 yr Yes, there was a CAT problem earlier on, which affected True, for most of the day. When I reported it they said there was no problem with speeds, but then they called back to say there was. Happily now seems to be resolved, although I seem to have picked up a virus in the intervening period, if that's possible.

This should make you smile.......http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/low/technology/6552823.stm Not really - would much prefer the 100mbps up/down that I had when I was in Tokyo in 2005, rather than something slower that BT is promising for next year (maybe). (and it was so cheap in Tokyo, it was thrown in free with the rent...) Edited April 16, 200719 yr by bkk_mike
April 16, 200719 yr Author right now the international speed is again down to about 10Kbps (yes small b = bit) somebody appears to be fumbling around with I don't know what at CAT. opalhort
April 16, 200719 yr From my traceroute inspections, there seems to be a problem with the cable and wireless link the London. The only links to Europe at the moment are FT (France) and TIS/Seabone (Italy). This could just be a major change in the routing tables though. I don't know. Edited April 16, 200719 yr by paveet
April 16, 200719 yr Funny, I'm experiencing the best accessability I've had in yonks .... bittorrent running in the background at a stable 70 kB/s (yes that's a B as in Byte) and still able to get webpages up at an acceptable rate.
April 16, 200719 yr Author well, now it is again up to full speed. just a few minutes ago I posted to TV and it took 3min to upload the post! so the problem must be (have been) somewhere here in Asia since TV servers are in sg opalhort

This should make you smile.......http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/low/technology/6552823.stm Yeah I would love to have somebody in Thailand worrying about being able to support 50Mbps DSL/Fiber. Heck, a real 2 or 4Mbit is a challenge over here. On a related note my VPN keeps going down the last 3-4 days - maybe that's why?! It just drops out, then takes a minute or two to notice that it's been disconnected - very annoying.
April 16, 200719 yr My VPN only had issues today... - and I was logged in on Saturday and Sunday - the connection even stayed up the whole of Saturday night (which surprised me). (tracert and whois showed today's problems to be at CAT - at least for True - probably some numpty doing holiday cover playing with the switches. That or their latest method for blocking Youtube is simply to disconnect Thailand as a whole from the Internet.)

That or their latest method for blocking Youtube is simply to disconnect Thailand as a whole from the Internet.) What was the nature of those issues? For me, and this continues happening and seems to happen with different providers, I am using Cisco VPN client 4.7: - I connect to VPN, works fine. - After some unspecified amount of time - see below - the VPN suddenly is silent - no data going in or out - At some point, long after that happened, the VPN disconnects - Sometimes it gets confused and I have to shut down the client and restart the Windows Service to get it to work again This happens every 5 minutes in the Hotel I am currently at, making it unusable. Happened a few times on AIS GPRS EDGE but not nearly as much - was fairly usable. Happened a few times on ADSL connection in Hua Hin. I am still not sure this isn't just the Hotel's fault and they have some weirdo setup. But I have seen it on the other two connections as well, just not nearly as much. I also saw this on another internet connection in another Hotel in Hua Hin (the every 5 minute syndrome). Well, if it continues, I might have to leave the country for a while. Singapore or something.

I can see two possibilities here... One is simply that a router somewhere (quite probably the hotel) is overloaded. Especially if they're using a cheap consumer router. The second is that you're maybe being inactive, and the connection is timing out at some point in the chain. The second one you can check by bringing up a remote terminal and coding a little loop with a delay to keep writing back to your screen every couple of minutes. i.e. I work on Unix - so something like this on a /bin/csh session. (i.e. on a telnet / ssh / xterm). while ( 1 ) echo "Keep alive" sleep 120 end If that works and keeps the connection up, you can stop blaming the hotel, and probably start questioning the people who set up your VPN server.
