3 guys have dinner. The dinner cost 30 baht. They all chip in and pay 10 baht each. The waitress take the money to the cashier. The cashier say, there is a 5 baht discount today.

The waitress don't know how to split 5 baht in 3, so she give each guy 1 baht and take 2 baht herself. So, the 3 guys paid 27 baht for their meal, the waitress took 2 baht.

27 + 2 is 29 baht. Where is the missing baht?

30 - 28 = 2 so we are missing 2 baht then? :D

The guys paid 30baht for a 25baht meal, they each received 1baht in change and the waitress got 2baht.

25baht (meal) + 3baht (change) = 28baht + 2baht (waitress) = 30baht.

The highlighted part of your post is inaccurate

I can remember this puzzle from many many years ago, it was so long ago I cannot for the life of me remember the answer. But its certainly a strange situation

meal costs 30

30 goes into the till

manager takes 5 out of the till and gives it to the waitress to give to the customers.

she gives 1 back to each of the 3 customers , and keeps 2 herself (=5)

no baht are missing.

the puzzle is in the wording.

Yo...

the discount is on the TOTAL bill

so each guy actually pays 8 and 1/3 baht

each guy gets a baht back = 9 and 1/3

3 x 9 and 1/3 = 28

waitress keeps 2 baht

28 + 2 = 30

i guess you guys don't know your fractions...eh?

reality is...

2 guys paid 8 and one guy paid 9... because, as we know, satang don't come in 3.3's

This is an old one.

The clue lies in "reversing the math's order", which causes the missing.

In Belgium, I learned in my old school days the Math's order trough a riddle:

"Meneer Van Dale Wacht Op Antwoord"

Meneer = Machtsverheffing (= involution?)

Van = Vermenigvuldiging (= Multiplication)

Dale = Deling (= Division)

Wacht = Worteltrekking (= Root Extraction)

Op = Optelling (= Sum)

Antwoord = Aftrekking (= Substraction)

(not sure about the English translations).....

In the given example about the "missing Baht", the math order rules are scrambled and thus gives an error in the calculation.

Have I won a price now, George?

Don't think anybody has quite got it... "So, the 3 guys paid 27 baht for their meal" IS accurate.

OK - when the three men get their 1 baht back (ea); they can then be said to have paid 27 baht for their meal. (Not 30 - forget that number. It's no longer relevant to anything. The new number is 27.) But the meal (with discount) was only 25 baht. So there's a 2 baht (not a 3 baht) difference. The waitress took the 2 baht.

This is exactly what illusionists do - divert attention from what's really taking place. In this case, focus on the actual cost of the meal (25), and what the men paid and got back (30-3=27), rather than the "old" or original cost of the meal, which means nothing. Compare THOSE two numbers (25 & 27), and you get the 2 baht tip the waitress kept. There's no longer a baht "missing". We should be counting UP from 25 (to the 27 the men paid after their refund), not DOWN from 30 (to 27; THAT 3 baht is the 1 baht each man got back and DOESN'T include the 2 baht the waitress received.

I don't think the math order thing really applies here; those are the rules every programmer knows for simply doing multiplication & division before addition & subtraction when parenthesis haven't been used to explicitly group arithmetic operations in an expression.

Yo... remember algebra, this is the crux... all the rest is just smoke.

x+x+x=30

but the discount is 5

so x+x+x=30-5

x+x+x=25

3x=25

now they all get 1 back

(x+1) + (x+1) + (x+1) =25+3

or 3(x+1)=28

and the waitress gets 2

so 3(x+1)+2=28+2

thus 3x+3+2=30

3x+5=30

... which ultimately goes back to

3x=25

solve for x

x=8.33

And remember... there are no 0.33 baht coins... so the price MUST be split inequitably

Look guys/gals... forget all the smoke and mirrors and supposed distraction

DO THE MATH

It all adds up.

Nothing is missing... except algebra skills in adults

Hey... I have taught this stuff to Grade 6,7,8 kids for decades... and they can get it - why can't adults?

Bottom line still is... even though the question isn't asked... who paid what?

From 30 baht...

2 guys paid 8... one guy paid 9... waitress got paid 2 for a tip... and restaurant paid 3 back to the guys

8+8+9+2+3... still = 30

Sorry... forgot to add the logical extension - i.e.... the guys paid the tip... after their discount

So... if the "new" total was 25

2 guys eventually paid 8... one guy paid 7... waitress got 2

8+8+7+2=25

And if you really want to extend (and confuse) this...

The guy who "originally" paid 9... is now paying 7...

His buddies are still paying 8...

So... only two of the guys paid the waitress's tip

The third guy was a freeloader.

Unless of course.. they each paid her 0.66 satang

3 x 0.66 = 2

But as we know... ya can't do that in Thailand.

(((30 - 5) + (1 + 1 + 1)) + 2) = 30

30 = Initial total sum paid

5 = total discount

1 + 1 + 1 = ristorno of 1 (baht) each customer

2 = remainder of the ristorno for the waitres

Nothing special ....

Just knowing how to do your maths.

You CANNOT substract the individual discount (30 - 3 = 27) and then make an addition (27 + 2 = 29).

This is simply wrong in maths.

Ooops... sorry again...

I didn't have my coffee before I did the previous post...

Rethinking gives me this...

After the refund, 30 becomes irrelevant.

The relevant number is now 27

Which is 25 (3 guys) +2 (waitress)

At 25 baht for 3 guys...

And for whole numbers ONLY... remember no satang...

It has to be 9+9+7=25 +2 = 27

SO... bottom line (revised after my coffee) is...

Two guys pay 9 each... and the 3rd guy pays 7 + the tip = 9

So they all pay 9

It's just that only one guy paid the 2 baht tip.

The extra 3 is a non-issue... and ceased to exist... as did the original 30

Nobody does anything with that other 3 baht... it is as if it never existed...

Nobody "gets it back"... because, in reality, it was never paid.
