I have been using Regvac but this software found an extra 221 registry problems and also it will do a registry de-frag. After running every utility my 'puter has speeded up noticeably. Ajarn Posted January 29, 2005 Share Posted January 29, 2005 I'm afraid of any programs that aren't idiot proof I have caused myself to have so many crashes and other problems by following the 'advice' of some of these things. But I'm sure my registry is in a mess from all the various programs I put in/take out regularly. In the readouts, they always give a warning about not deleting the wrong one from their list, but I have no clue which reg 'problems' to delete, and which shouldn't be deleted... Just click on the "one click maintenance" button and it identifies all the problems and then fixes them. Tax, I have no idea about registries either. You are not playing with the registry, you are letting a program do it for you. A program written by an expert. Experts are expensive but this one can be free. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Take a look at the review comments on the link below and it should put your mind at rest: http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/awards/ (not many comments from mainstream computer magazines - although I sometimes wonder if they're a bit in hock to the likes of Norton etc - but enough from shareware libraries/specialist mags etc ) Initial impressions of it are very good. Great interface, easy to follow comments/explanations - and changes appear to be reversible (haven't proved how 100% that is yet). By the way, I think it's good procedure to execute the major processes one step at at a time - i.e. "clean" the registry and re-boot; if all's well, then defragment the registry and so on.......... It follows that I'm a bit reluctant to use the "1-Click" function - tempting as it is; it's easy/quick enough to use the individual steps and doing so is good education for all as well as entertainment for some of us geeks. TuneUp found a helluva a lot more errors than my previous favourite (Registry Mechanic) and Norton (which I'd used for years but don't trust any more). Can't comment about Ashampoo WinOptimiser etc - I've always been suspicious about them (we're all entitled to at least one prejudice) and they market at you like mad once they get their hands on your e-mail address. Anyhow, TuneUp seems to combine much of what I have in other favourites like WindowWasher and Tweak-XP. Used to love Tweak-XP but the latest version (Pro 4) has got bloated and too complex to navigate/choose functions. The StartUp selection menu is also good to have (works better than my previous favourite - StartUp Cop), particularly if your OS is XP (Pro in my case) - which we all know just LOVES to load stuff that you MIGHT want sometime and doesn't make it easy to know what it has decided to do. In response to Ajarn's point, IMHO the TuneUp registry editor function should come with a massive health warning and a lot more "are you sure?" deterrent. It doesn't seem to do any more any easier than standard Windows regedit does - and is just as intricate/dangerous if you don't know your way around (and I don't). I've just recently had to mess with my registry to un-install manually a previous version of Laplink before I could install the new one. Even following Laplink's registry edit instructions to the letter, I f***ed my system twice - only got back in business after System Restores. Three rules of registry editing? Don't, don't and don't. Let a (reversible) programme like this do it. Lots of other thoughts (mainly positive), but I guess that's enough to say. Overall, it looks safe and comprehensive enough to justify using it. So far has seemed to be very good and found over 100 errors in my one month old computer - I did review many of them and all were found to be real so have some confidence in the one step switch now. Had to do a rollback for another reason and re installed it and it found the same errors it had found the first time and corrected them again. Gave the memory a workout with a magazine reading program that has caused problems and it keep the virtual memory happy so it seems to have a lot of usable functions. Abandon Posted February 3, 2005 Share Posted February 3, 2005 installed and running cheers!! But, suddenly got terrible probelms with Bit torrent freezing. I always had this problem a little, but suffenly got 10x worse. The only thing I changed is via this program, so Im not sure if there is any conneciton. Amazing how much COM <deleted> gets left behind in the registry. If you ever tried to remove that info manually you'd know it takes ages - this application has done an excellent job of it... Shola Posted February 3, 2005 Share Posted February 3, 2005 Ive just used a mixture of PC Pitstop (which I found recomended on the forum) plus I just installed the Tune Up 2004, it's solved loads of issues, the only thing still not performing up to par is Ping Latancy ( ) but apparently thats all to do with the ISP and nout I can do to change it. Perhaps they let the first IP they log with a particular serial number keep it, and everyone else gets zapped! Anyway, thanks for everything - I just spent the last couple of hours tuning lots of things, and it "feels" much better. The display is now crystal clear- 100% better than it was! Cheers! Cheers, Technophobe. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm fairly sure that I too got the same MS Anti-Spyware message and it did specify that it was TuneUp that wanted to run. If you run TuneUp, go to Optimise and Improve, go to TuneUp System Optimiser, then go to Schedule Automatic Maintenance, you may see that you have "1-Click Maintenance" scheduled. I think this is what wants to be installed at start-up. If you run the System Configuration Utility, you will probably see "TuneUp WinStyler Theme Service" in the list of Startup Items. If MS Anti-spyware doesn't give any more details about it, I should definitely leave it blocked! Try and find it on your PC and see where it lives. That might give you a clue as to what it is for, but I would not let it run unless I was 100% sure it was safe. It certainly does not sound like the TuneUp service, so leave it blocked. It doesn't turn up in either Altavista or Google like most malware will if its been written about so its hard to say what it is.
