Thailand's data centre market is entering a period of rapid growth, driven by global technology companies and leading domestic operators. Most facilities are being developed in Bangkok, surrounding provinces and the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), notably Chonburi and Rayong. Five different ways data centres operate Enterprise data centres are built, owned and run by a single organisation for its own internal use. They are common among financial institutions, commercial banks and government agencies with strict data-governance requirements. The model offers maximum control and security, but leaves the owner carrying high construction and maintenance costs. Its global share has been declining compared with outsourced data-centre services. Hyperscale facilities are owned by major cloud providers and serve their own cloud platforms, rather than renting physical server space to outside customers. Google has announced US$1 billion, or about 36 billion baht, of investment, while Amazon Web Services has outlined a US$5 billion, or about 190 billion baht, long-term investment over 15 years. Microsoft is also expanding infrastructure to support the launch of an Azure Region in Thailand. Users access these services through cloud platforms rather than by placing equipment inside the centres. Colocation is currently the model with the greatest level of investment circulating in Thailand. Operators build facilities with power, cooling and network connections, then rent capacity to businesses or cloud providers that install their own servers. STT GDC Thailand, a joint venture between Frasers Property and ST Telemedia Global Data Centres, operates the STT Bangkok 1 building in Hua Mak at 20 megawatts, STT Bangkok 2 at 24 megawatts, and STT Bangkok 3 at One Bangkok at 2 megawatts - more than 46 megawatts in total. NTT Global Data Centers is developing sites at Amata City Chonburi in the EEC, including BKK2 at 5 megawatts, BKK3 at 12 megawatts and the new 100-megawatt BKK4 campus. It is also preparing investment in BKK5. Cloud services and edge computing Edgnex Data Centers by DAMAC, a joint venture in which DAMAC Group holds 70% and PROEN Corp is its partner, involves investment of more than US$1 billion in a 20-megawatt data centre. The industry is watching issues around electricity and cooling management. GSA Data Center, backed by GULF through Gulf Edge, Singtel and AIS, is developing facilities for enterprises and hyperscalers. Initial capacity exceeds 20 megawatts, with plans to reach 100 megawatts. True IDC also operates colocation services across several campuses nationwide. Cloud and managed-service operators go further, offering computing resources, storage and management on a pay-as-used basis. INET, or Internet Thailand, serves government and private-sector customers with local cloud services, while True IDC and AIS Business offer hybrid services including private cloud, domestic local cloud and hyperscale cloud partnerships with Microsoft Azure, AWS, Huawei Cloud and Oracle. Edge data centres are smaller sites located closer to users or data sources, reducing delay for real-time tasks such as autonomous vehicles, factory automation and smart cities. AIS Business is applying Multi-Access Edge Computing, or MEC, to move processing nearer the network edge. Networks remain central Behind the projects are telecoms and internet providers linking traffic through submarine-cable landing stations and internet exchanges. Key names include National Telecom, CS Loxinfo, TCC Technology, UIH of the Benchachinda Group, Symphony Communication, PROEN Corp and ReadyIDC.
