We will be moving to Thailand in May. I still am working on arrangement to get our flea bitten mutt over. He is too big to ship baggage on China Air who we would prefer to fly. He is 100+ pounds.

So far it looks like we will have to ship him cargo, and pay more for him that both my wife's and my ticket cost together. He is lucky the wife is so attached!

Sooooo anyway, does anyone have any info on shipping big animals?

My other concern is once we get him to Thailand will there be a big hassle? before we can take him?

Moved here 18 months ago with 3 dogs (Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound and a Border Collie) and I must admit that Farma is correct, get a professional company to do it for you, it will save you a lot of time and worries, maybe send your dog on a few days after you as this will give you time to settle in first. Be prepeared for a long wait at the cargo offices! thet do like to take their time.

8) The animals are subjected to quarantine at approved premises for a period of at least 30 (thirty) days upon arrival during which they shall be submitted to tests/treatments deemed necessary. The importer/owner shall be fully charge for the incurred expenses.

Right now my plan is to fly over then have a friend ship our dog a week later or so by China air cargo and receive him ourselves.

I can see that this might concern you, it did worry me for some time but on one of the many forms you will have to fill out it asks you' where you will be quarantineing your animals' and there is a small box below the line you have to fill in which states 'at home' tick this and you will have no problem. Just make sure you have all your paperwork correct and you will be able to take your dog home with you.

One of the many forms huh? Is that on the Thai side? Are they in english? Because it seems pretty simple from this side. I'm not running into any paperwork to speak of here so i assume once i go to pick him up in Thailand I will run into trouble. Could you explain the process you went through in more detail?

I too am traveling with my dog for a threem onth stay in BKk while I attend care at Bumrungrad. Any accomodations you know of in the sukhumvit area taht allows 40kg dogs. And, if I check of the "at home" option of where i am Qing my dog, but am staying at a hotel can I get away with it or do they require proof of address or some other factor that will disqualify me from Qing my dog with me at my hotel when and if I find one!

I called EVA airlines and they told me one of their requirement is to have a Import certificate from Thailand before they would accept our dog. Has anyone heard of this?

Sorry it has taken so long but I have just found the relevent documents. OK you have arrived at Bangkok airport you will then have to go to the cargo offices to apply for your import document. There is an office that deals with live animals but I am sorry I cannot remember the room number but it is on the third floor and there will be plenty of people about to ask. The cargo offices are to the left as you come out of the terminal past the domestic terminal, you can walk it.

Take copies of all your paperwork with you, the form you need to fill in is in Thai but do not worry as there is a copy form stuck to the counter and you can work how to fill it out from that.

It will take 24hrs to get this form processed. Once you have the document you inform your airline they may ask you to fax a copy.

Ok this is where the fun starts on the day your dog arrives he will have to have a vet check (this is done for you at the airport and you will not have to arrange this) you then need to pay the import duties, this is done in a very bizarre way. In the same building there are offices of importers/exporters (licenced bandits!) and you have to contact one of these or as in our case, runners for these offices will catch you outside the building and take you in, they will then run you through the whole process, make sure you have enough money with you (you might want to take at least £300-00) this will take some time so take a good book and some water! and after this fun filled day you collect your dog!!!

We did it brought our cat & dog here to Thailand from California. You need proff of shots required, rabies certificate within 30 days of leaving, and stamped health certificates from Vet mailed to a official from State Capitol Animal Health and Livstock dept. not more then 10 prior of leaving. If still in doubt ask you vet where you are from in the US to assist you with info. If you have all info needed there is no quarenteen.

Really it was not a big problem, they are both happy and healthy with us now here in Hau Hin.

We've brought in 2 dogs from Australia and 1 from Italy as unaccompanied baggage with no problems. The is also no quarantine, but you will need a some important health docs to prove that your pets are healthy. You will need 1) a Leptospirosis vaccination certificate, at least 21 days prior to departure Animal must be healthy and free from any sign of infectious or contagious disease and 2) Rabies vaccination certificate. Your pet must be vaccinated at least 15 days prior to departure. Also need with 3) an Identity certificate signed in country of origin by a registered veterinarian, describing age, breed, sex, color, etc.

You should seriously consider using a company that specialises in pet import/export/transport because they organise all the customs/vet paperwork, crates, flights, etc. They do all the major work and All you have to do is pick up your pet at the airport.
