  1. Thanks for all the replies.

I am not going to Chinatown for the nightlife but for my favourite fishballs noodle soup that opens very late in the night.

If the taxi ride from the city to RKH is just around 150 baht, it's not far and certainly worth the savings compared to city centre hotels. I mean for a first time stay, just to see the area.

  2. Ananda is different. He is an actor on the big screen, leading man in over 10 movies and won 2 best actor award.

Then how come nobody has ever heard of him? are these just local Thai movies and awards? I certainly remember watching Michael Landon many years ago. Awards mean naff all.

. You mean if nobody knows him, the moviemakers still use him as leading man ? As I mentioned Michael Landon is in a tv series(which is free to watch) so more people know him then but I am sure not everyone watch tv too. Ananda is not in tv; so not free, obviously not everyone knows him but if you ask those who goes to the cinemas, 99% of Thais know him, 66% of S.E.Asians know him, 33% of world cinema audience know kim. Like him or not is another matter.
  3. asanee,

Thank you very much for those helpful info but pardon me for my poor English(I am a Chinese), I need to clarify with you... just to confirm....

Do you mean that after visiting Paknam, better get back to hotel at RKH, then ARL to airport rather than Paknam to airport ?

Do you mean that it's better for me to catch a taxi from nearby Hua Makh stn rather than direct from RKH station ?

Actually, I need to be at the airport by 5 pm. I guess I it's still enough time if I leave the hotel early or don't do the crocodile farm.

    Thanks again.

  4. Forget the regular blue bus, taxi, Suvarhabumi, Airport Link, Ekammai, Airport Bus, BTS etc. etc..................

The easiest, and cheapest way, to travel from Pattaya to Ramkamhaeng Road is by minibus from Talat Sophon on Third Road, Pattaya to "The Mall" in Bang Kapi. Then by taximeter to RamkamHaeng Soi 71........ or anywhere else on Ramkamhaeng Road. The minibus fare is 130 baht (approx). The Pattaya office telephone number, for booking the minibus, is 087-832-6202. The minibus will collect you from your location, as long as you are near Third Road.

Talat Sophon is on Third Road very close to the traffic lights on the junction with Soi 17 (you will always see a few white minibuses parked there).

    Hope this helps. thumbsup.gif

Thanks. Sounds good, I can visit this mall too, but how regular is this minbus from Pattaya to Bangkapi Mall(correct ?) and how long will the journey takes ? Is it the final stop ?
  5. Can anyone advise how shall I do it ?

I understand this station is near or at Sukhumvit 71 road and the Pattaya bus terminates at the Eastern Bus station along Sukhumvit too.

If I return from Pattaya by bus, where can I alight to reach Ramkamhaeng ?

Is it much faster to take the Pattaya bus to Su airport and change to the airport link train; compared to getting to the Eastern bus terminal and take subway or sky train to Makkasan and connect to Ramkhamhaeng ? Or any direct bus ?

I will try to avoid the taxi unless really necessary. Thanks.

  6. If I stay near the Ramkhamhaeng Airport train station but taking a night departure flight, I am thinking of making a visit to Samut Prakan for the Ancient City & Erawan Museum after checkout in the morning and head straight to the airport after that. Is it feasible ? The trouble is the luggage and the timing.

Is the Erawan Museum and Ancient City nearer to the airport or Ramkhahaeng Station ?

Engaging a taxi for the day is convenient but it will cost me about 2500 bahts, each trip may probably cost just round 200 bahts(correct me if wrong).

    A dilemma, please advise.

  7. I am thinking of staying in this area for a change. I have some questions and hope some can help:

    1) Nasa Vegas Hotel to the Ramkhamhaeng Airport train station is just 100 metres but is it easy to cross the road(a highway) ? Or is there a entrance/exit to the station without any need to cross the road ?

    2) Which is the best shopping mall near the station area ? Bangkapi Mall appears to be quite a a few km away. What's the easy way to get there ? By boat or bus ?

    3) Are there many places for local food near the Nasa Vegas Hotel in the morning ?

    4) I read Ramkhamhaeng has a lively nightlife scene, but how far is it from this hotel/station area ? Exactly where is it if I use google map ?

    5) While getting into the city is easy, by the canal boat or the airport train, my concern is the return to the hotel in the night, how much roughly will a taxi trip cost from Silom or Chinatown and how long will the journey takes ?

    Thank you in advance.

Any info or advice is much appreciated.

  8. so the AirAsia-Whiners have found a new "field of activity", of course without even having stayed at a TUNE hotel.

I have stayed at several TUNE's in Malaysia over the past few years, and when booked at the right time and in advance, they offer better value than anybody else. stayed at PENANG several times, usually paid not more than 500 THB per night. Good location, small but clean rooms. yes they charge for extras, but then at other cass you stay at hotel and automatically pay for tings you don't need or use.

Stayed at JB and Kuching as well, and liked it.

just make sure you get the right price. in KL for example, it is lousy value for money, they are usually always fully booked (their hotel at LCCT even has a occupancy rate HIGHER than 100%!) and then they charge high rates that make it bad value for money.

booked CEBU for 10 days later this year, less than 600 PHP a night. what more can you expect.......

    AirAsia-Whiners.....?????

Geez now I'm not sure if I am in Pattaya or Malaysia?

So Tune Hotel's way of selling rooms still appeals to some people, if not you. On your earlier post, I don't quite agree with you on comparing the Tune's way of selling rooms by comparison to restaurants without a price in the menu. I certainly agree with you and I dislike shopping at products without a price tag or menu without a price for the item. It only showed they have something to "hide" or slaughter you when ordered, a very common practice in Malaysia. Whereas, in the case of Tune Hotels, it's different. You get to check the room rates before committing on the room although troublesome.
  9. I think I found it in google map. Is the Big C located at Central Centre Pattaya ? If I am correct, it's location is 3 kms from Royal Garden Plaza by the beach road, but it's considered far from Walking Street, isn't it ? A bit confused by Google Map, I also find McDonalds Royal Garden Plaza just less than 1 km from Central Centre Pattaya, are there 2 Royal Garden Plaza ?

  10. John Everingham was a quite well known photographer of the Vietnam war era.

He smuggled his wife (later to be Ananda's mother ) out of Laos in 1977 in dramatic circumstances.

There was a biopic made of the affair, starring Michael Landon, no less (for younger ThaiVisa readers,Michael Landon was big in the Eighties - for him to star in your biopic was quite an honour in those days!).

This thread has just become alot more interesting, what a great story. Will have to have a viewing of this film if i can find it,also in the film is edward woodward and priscilla presley and its called love is forever.

Funny how the thread started about photography and. turns out his father was a well known photographer

That's one of the interesting thing about communications. BTW, Michael Landon was never considered big as someone mentioned. He was just a leading actor in one tv series, and a total flop in other tvs or movies. IMDB shows.

Come on!!! Bonanza (Little Joe), Little House on the Prairie (Father), Highway to Heaven (Angel) - Classics!!!

He is not the leading man in Bonanza although this series's success landed him into Little House on the Prairie which is really his but the next, Highway to Heaven which he played lead was a flop, that finished off his acting career. Showed that he lacked substance or something. In fact Little House was remembered much for its story, not for him. BTW, he has not won a single acting award.

Ananda is different. He is an actor on the big screen, leading man in over 10 movies and won 2 best actor award.

  11. I am a dummy in Thai address. My quiries are not answered yet. Someone please help.

So is this place near Royal Garden ? Looks like it's near a Central Mall or something in North Pattaya. Is there any big mall and many cafes within walking from this hotel ?

  12. Just looked at their website and I wouldn't stay there.

For 1 they don't even give the price of their rooms on their website.

Second I copied and pasted this direct from their website:

    NOT Provided

    • Telephone, Radio, Cupboard/Closets, Dressing table, Table, Chairs, Iron/ Ironing board
    • Room Service
    • Swimming pool, Gym, Spa, Sauna, Meeting room

In other words it's just a new shoe box. May be ok for 500 baht per night but what are their prices? Anyone know?

I checked their website; I know their address but can't find in google map.

The downside is their bathroom door that many dislike, it's transparent and translucent without lock, so having a roommate or visitor is inconvenient.

Their prices varies depending when you book. When they opened for booking, it was around 500 baht but dropped their prices last week for a promotion for certain period and happens around my visiting time, and you pay extra for what you want, like aircon, wifi, etc but that gives flexibility, which I think is good.

I don't see anything wrong with them for mentioning no sauna or swimming pool, at least they are honest here,

  14. According to my Thai Kubota calander, full moon is the 30th of Oct, its marked as a temple day.

Best to check when the date is a little closer, there's always write up in the paper about the fireballs and the day to go.

Thanks again. Sorry to trouble again, is there a way for me to check Thai Kubota calander online on my own without understanding Thai ? Tried to google but can't get it.
  15. NancyL. You are right. Sorry for doubting you. I just remembered wrong it was 10 years ago when I got the private room. If I recall it was about 4K baht though. Not really worth it since flights are much cheaper now.

Anyone who advises taking the bus doesn't read the news. Though I have never had a problem from CM to BKK, you read all the time about major crashes and everyone dying a few times a year whereas I cannot recall a single crash of a plane or train in the past decade here.

There are road accidents too of all kinds of vehicles whereas I cannot recall a single accident of someone in a wheelchair on the road; so are you going to sit in a wheelchair wherever you go instead ?
  16. The Naga fireballs are a once a year deal,

It's the full moon at the end of October, and only for one night, after the rains retreat

I've been several times and think it's well worth it, but I live not far from where it happens. Lots of people don't seem to think it's worth going too.

Thanks. Can you find out for me what will be the date for this year ? Is it Oct 28th or 29th ?

According to my Calander full moon in October is Tuesday Oct 30, but best to check before travelling.

I don't know if I'd make a journey out of it, like I say I live close by so we go in the afternoon, stake a piece of riverbank and eat and drink while the show goes on.

This is strange. According to the Chinese Lunar Calander, it's Oct 28th but I checked that last few years reports have been that on the Fireballs have been 1 day later than Chinese full moon, but Oct 30th will be 2 laters later. I wonder if Thailand's full moon day can be different from other countries ?

  18. I have 4 days between Ubon Thani & Nakhon Phanom to see the fireballs and the Illuminated Boat Parade at NOP, so will be sleeping 2 nights in Nong Khai and 2 in NOP.

Can anyone advise if this fireballs apprearance always happen on the full moon night or for a few nights ? Is it worth all the trouble to get there just for it ? Will there be any other events beside the fireballs thing ? Wondering what else can I do or see if the fireballs don't appear. I have read that taking the bus and back can be quite an ordeal.
