  1. Just noticed the add for Meals on Wheels here in CM. I used to use the one in BKK and it was great.

I live in Hang Dong, in a moo ban near the government office, and I have had problems ordering from the Pizza comp. etc. because the claim the won't be able to find where I live. But I do like to have food delivered, so.

Have anyone got any experience of ordering from MoW here in CM?

Is the food packaged well and still warm when you get it? Is the quality of the food as good as if they served it in their restaurant? Do they deliver within a reasonable time? And will they take your order in English?

  2. They do not hand these out just because it's the time of the month. If I were you I would be looking for the torn up pieces, as the smile will be on the other side of your face when you come to re register your vehicle next time, and you are refused registration till your fine is paid with interest. Reckon you were pretty smart eh? :) The police here may be lazy, but they are certainly not dumb!!

A quick edit. The reason the parking ticket was in Thai, is because you happen to be in Thailand, where most Thais speak Thai, and people like you are in a minority.

    This is true.

My gf lend her bike to a friend who got a no helmet fine. When she went to register the bike she had to pay 1000 b to cover the fine.

  3. Make sure you tell the staff though - I walked past last night and mentioned the half price drinks if I wear my shirt and they didn't seem to understand or know :D

probably only applies to WC games :D

btw you football fans consider yourselves lucky you get to see football, us rugby fans are left in the dark with no signals from DSTV. Well there was no signal for the S14 semi finals last night :D

:) yeeees I know that... I just asked when the WC starts and I wear my shirt (which I now have - horray!) are they offering half-price drinks and they all looked at me as if I were pee baa (which I may be but that's a different story).

Be nice if we all met at ONE bar and had a crowd of us?

Yup my bad, haven't told the bartender about the half priced drinks yet. :D

Didn't think anyone was going to ask about it before the actual WC. But I'll be in the bar to make sure myself when the WC starts, I'm going to watch all the games anyway.

But it is on, and we will be open for the 1.30 kick off games as well, have done that before without any problems from the bib.

  4. DRAGONFLY BAR will be Showing all the games, even the 01.30 ones in HD Click for Map

I received my HD box today and as with the regular channels you have the choice of Thai or English commentary. When I ordered it the guy I spoke to said he couldn't guarantee that the world cup would be with English commentary.

This ties up with the email I received from Bangkok.

No-one can give a guarantee because True Visions haven't purchased the commentary!

At least he was honest and didn't offer you a 100% guarantee that you would get it.

As I said before if they were offering English commentary, I honestly think they would make a point of advertising it big time to encourage more subscribers.

As gotlost quite rightly said; "Place your money and wait for the cards to be dealt June 11th".

True are really screwing their customers over. To get the WC you have to upgrade to HD Box.

The sooner some new operator comes the better imo.

No, you can receive it on the free Thai TV channels.

You upgrade to HD to watch it in HD, but that's the picture only - so far True have not bought the commentary in English. (See email from True Bangkok)

Quote Dannybay: "ok i stand corrected, to get the WC without ads, you must get the HD box

what about the customers, some that have been customers for years, that pay 2000 baht/month for True?

I dont know about you but if i was i a customer of True for years and wanted to see WC as per all football matches, i would be rather peeved to be told to upgrade. (that was the point i was trying to make)"

You don't have to upgrade, with the regular packages you get the Thai channels, so you can watch it there. The ekstra 2000 B is a one time deposit you'll get back when you chansel you subscription. The ekstra fee is 290 B per month and for this you get HBO HD and True Sprts HD. I have the Gold package which dosn't include the ASN sports channel, TS HD shows many of the same shows as ASN, inc. the NHL playoffs and NFL, stuff I want to watch, now I get that for an exstra 290 instead of the 500+ to upgrade to Platinum and i get sports in HD. A good deal me thinks.

I have a 55" LED tv and with the regular TS signal watching football is just no good. I don't know what they do with the signal they recieve from Europe but you get a lot of pixilation an motion artifacts on a big screen here in Thailand, a lot more than from a SD signal in Europe.

Last night i watched the last round of the Spanish PL in HD and man what a difference, I switched back and forth between TS 1 and TS HD a couble of times and there was just no way to compare the quality. Even wifey sat through the entire game, something that never happens, because it looked so good.

I am so impressed that I have decided to bring my own TV to the bar for the world cup since I'll be watching the games there anyway.

    Oh I can't wait

  6. You'll get a good burger at the Mayflower restaurant in Loi Kroh (Near the girly bars)

I don't know what they put in it, or what kind of beef/buffalo it's made from, but every time I've had one it's nice and juicy.

90 bath for a Cheese burger, and they'll serve it to you in one of the nearby bars if you want. Great if you were sitting in the Dragonfly Bar for instance :) (okay so that's blatently adverticing my own bar, but everybody is getting their own in as well :D )

The burger is great though, try it.

  7. Get of you high horse now! :)

I have already done a TV search and the latest post I could find was 3 years old and didn't contain any info on prices, if there is one just post me the link and that will be fine.

My uncle is arriving from Canada this weekend for a 3 week stay and he wants to have some shirts tailored. Even though I have stayed in CM for a while now I have never been to any of the tailors, so where should I take him?

To be more specific he wants short sleeved Thai silk shirts for sure, but he has been talking about a suit as well.

    Thanks in advance

  8. There is a stadium near the train station.

I have never been as muay thai is not my thing, so I don't know the name or the exact location. But I do have an acquaintance who is really into May thai and he says it's the place to go.

I know it's not much, but good luck.

  9. I just had some major dental surgery perform at Chiang Mai Ram. Major infection, in hospital 6 days and six teeth removed for new partial Total 74,000 baht not cheep but excellent service. I was knocked out for the removal. I would recommend their dental clinic any time.

I also recommend the RAM dental clinic. I had my first two wisdom teeth done courtesy of the US Marine Corps many years ago and not only was I in severe pain, but I was almost bedridden for almost a week.

I have had a wisdom tooth and two root canals done at RAM without a bit of pain and no drugs necessary. If you can love a dentist, I love the place. :)

We may of had the same dentist. :D

Had my wisdom tooth done here by a lady dentist 2 years ago come songkran. She previously worked for 5 years in Germany, wery professional, wery quick and no pain under local anastetic.

Would go back any day of the week.

  10. There is an alternative ti Flight of the Gobbon now, It's longer and cheeper and in my oppinion better (having done both), but of course the name escapes me.

There is also the X centre, with many different types of activities Link to X centre

You could also just try to google 'team building chiang mai' and see what you get.

    Here is two options:

    Rock climbing

    Tracking

Used to work with kids myself and do this kind of stuff, it's great fun.

    Good luck

  11. Thae Pae Rood and Soi 2 is their main office. Walk east down The Pae Road towards the river its on you left side. If you get to Chang Klan Road you passed it . Its a two story gray building . Should not miss it.

I think you'll find it on the right hand side as yoiu are walkimg towards the river. It's a big grey marble building with a one story colonnade running down the soi.

Please correct me if I'm wromg :)

  12. Oh, I thought this was going to be a discussion on all those lovely young ladies in Pattaya bars who say " Hello, welcome handsome man!" :):D

I'm sorry but you must have heard them wrong, I'm sure they were saying 'ham som' man :D

Oh and by the way the link doesn't work

  13. Rose cafe gets my vote too! Breakfast is top notch, one large HD TV and a smaller one the other end. You won't be disappointed if you go there.

Just a shame about the quality of the UBC signal not being HD. I have a 55" Samsung LED at home, I never watch sports on it because the picture is just no good. Basically in Thailand the bigger and better your TV is, the worse the picture will look because of the low grade SD signal.

You'll be better of chosing where to go looking at what else is offered, rather that whether ther is a HD tv or not.

You can get quality HD streams off the net.. and direct them to you TV. Super bowl as well... you just have to have a good internet connection.

True, but since the signal comes from servers outside Thailand you can get problems with botllenecked bandwith, allthough at that time a day it might not be problem.

Went to the new Siam TV building yesterday to check out the deals and pau an UBC bill. And lo and behold... In the TRUE shop they are adverticing HD, one of the channels that soposedly will be avaliable is ASN (that shows the Super Bowl) but not till March at the earliest. So Maybe next year we will all be able to watch the Super Bowl in HD without a great internet connection.

    My fingers are crossed.

  14. I know the police have been down the girly bars on Loi Kroh, but I spoke to the owers of The What bar and they hadn't recieved any notice about selling alcohol or been given any stickers to put op.

Have any of the other bar owners (Kevin) in CM any experience with this, is it just another effort to reform Loi Kroh or is it in all of CM?

  16. Participating on an internet forum has little to do with reading for pleasure. I will read an article or two online or look for information, but I have several - yet unpublished - books that I would like to read, that friends have written, stored in my computer and I have never been able get past about 3 pages. Luckily it will not be too much longer before they come out in paperback.

And therein lies the strength of the Kindle (I'm asuming you didn't get past page 3 because of how uncomfortable it is to read on a computer, not because you got bored).

On a kindle you can read for hours without getting tired eyes, so if you had one you could now be talking to your friend about their unpuplished masterpieses. :)

Personally I love to read, and not just pulp. I have spend more hours than I can remember in the local library finding new and exiting books to read, but try backpacking and logging 'The Brothers Karamazov' around with you, too much weight in one book to be comfortable. But now posible thanks to ebooks.

Many of the argument here against ebooks are very similar to the arguments against CD's and laptops when they were first introduced (anyone remember what was said about the Apple Macintosh Portable in 89?), well maybe except the one about saving trees or not, and we all know how that ended up.

I don't think paper books will ever disappear completely, but most likely will become what vinyl is today.

  17. Personally I had a bad experience with Tanin law setting up a work permit. After waiting for a month and a half, including no reply to phone calls. mesages or email. When I finnaly got fed up I went to Siam Legal wich I had avoided because of people telling me it was too expencive. Got my work permit in 10 days at a good price.

  18. When in Carrefour the system price is higher then the mentioned price you get the product for free, happened to me several times.

Indeed many errors, so I started to write the prices on the packages with a CD-writer, then it's easy to check when at the cassier :)

When I shop at Carrefour I always scan every product I buy at those price check scanners spread all over the shop.

I only keep the items that are wrong priced. :D

Wow, you have just saved me loads of money, Maybe not time.... But money, YEAH!

  19. 1. US stations transmit in NTSC format. Thai TV stations use PAL. You will not get a picture.

    2. Get a Thai digital set top box and plug it in using a HDMI cable for the best picture..

    3. US power supply is 110 Volts, Thai is 230/240 volts. You will need a transformer.

    4. If you have a DVD player it will probably show both NTSC and PAL formats. Check the manual.

Most modern TV can accept both NTSC and PAL, my Samsung certainly does.

A Thai digital set box. Please tell me where, I have been looking for a way to get this for UBC but I'm stricking blanks.

Tell me tell me tell me....... NOW!!! :)

  20. It's more than likely, classic ground hum. Unfortunately, with Thai grounding standards, or lack thereof, this is a bit problematic.

Do a google search on "ground hum".

I have done a bit of research on ground hum/ground loop and here is how I understand it.

Ground hum can occur if you have two or more systems working toghter but connected to different wall sockets. Or if you connect the power with a 3-prong A.C. cord.

    Is this correct?
