  1. Buddhism practiced by the laypeople in Thailand is an a la carte style. They take what they like when they want to. As a Buddhist myself I identify very little with the practice in Thailand. Buddha did not promote ceremony or idols and thought such things were crutches for the weak of mind. He certainly never promoted going to a temple to ask for good luck in a lottery. The seeking of merit by Thais is always related to the hoping that some craving will be satisfied. As much as I adore my wife, I see these unskillful practices by her but gradually she is starting to understand and see what Buddha was really trying to say.

    1988 was the confirmation date. He was nominated much earlier in 1987. There's no parallel there.

  3. Let's just say for the laypeople it's more of an a la carte version of Buddhism. Thais are far more into ceremonies and idol worship than ever espoused or endorsed by the Buddha and for purposes never taught or approved of by the Buddha. But you can also see the positive influence in how Thais live in the present moment, are more patient and have a much less aggressive nature than westerners.

  4. If she truly loved him and he her and treated her with respect then why would I have a problem with it? I know how good I am to my younger wife and how much I love her so why would I have a problem with my daughter having what I know my wife has and appreciates? Yes I do have a grown daughter.
