The 'free world' you mention is a total illusion. the EU is not free, its population are amongst the most regulated in the entire world. Why shouldn't a collection of rich advanced economies defend itself, what is the rationale in today's world. There was a rationale after the war for having these war ravaged economies protected by the US, there is none now, especially as NATO has become a fig leaf for US geopolitical wars. On the surface this seems like a reasonable analysis.....except, I think the country is in a mess, and headed in the wrong direction, and unless there is a revolutionary at the helm, the status quo of entrenched corrupt interests in the Senate and Congress will continue to prevail. We need a candidate who will say not to endless funding requests from these abominable institutions full of senile grey old men. Americas are overtaxed and they have to stop borrowing to fund endless wars. When I lived there I paid 36% federal marginal tax, plus a 3.6% surcharge making 39.6% federal taxes. I then paid 10.7% NJ state taxes; 1.25% Medicare Tax and some other SS tax. Plus I paid outrageous property taxes, of around $25000 per year half of it on a pice of land I owned that no one lived on; and 7% NJ state sales taxes ono pretty much everything I bought, plus miscellaneous import duties and excise taxes in items purchased from abroad....adding it all up around some 60% or more of my marginal income inns going in some form of taxes. Despite seizing such a huge percentage of my income the senators and congressmen cannot get by without borrowing trillions each year. I CRY FOUL. It is time for Congress and Senate to live within their means. Biden will not change course and suddenly start cutting budgets for woke initiatives. Trump may or may not, cuts some sacrosanct programs like Medicare, Medicaid, Welfare and the Military and stop sending 60 billion a year to Ukraine that serves no purpose at all, and provides no benefits to America. Better for Trump to ally with Putin and save tax payers 60 billion and tell Ukraine to go pound sand.

He won't be in the contest. He doesn't have the funding or sponsors for one thing. I would love him to run though and he would get my vote. He'll also pretty much end any hope of a Biden presidency if he splits the Democrat vote even getting only 2 or 3% of the votes in close states .

Speaking for myself.....in a choice between Trump and Biden, it would be Trump who gets my vote in a heartbeat. It is not because I am 'bedazzled' by Trump, or taken in by his 'thoughtless rhetoric'. Democrats love war and starting new wars....even peace prize winning Obama started unneeded wars. The GOP are less enamoured by war, although still like war very much indeed, but are more isolationist and less persuaded by grandiose arguments about America's empire. Hence I have a preference for Trump in the Trump/Biden contest. If the choice were Haley/Biden, I wouldn't vote. If Biden or Trump drops out for any reason, legal or otherwise, and A.N.Others takes their place, then their attitude to endless war will determine who I vote for.

Changes in government or President have zero real impact on me as an expat. But even as a citizen living in the US, the changes are very minor. What would I care if a woman I don't know has to go to another state to get an abortion? Answer, I don't care. Do I care if I pay $500 more in taxes or $500 less...it makes zero difference to me. etc etc. The only issue I care about is unnecessary wars, and again it matters little which party is in power, they all love war.....this is the only thing I like about Trump, he is the only guy who might stand up the military-industrial complex. He is the only one who might avoid further industrial scale bloodshed, although not where Israel is concerned. I am hoping that since he seems to have distanced himself from Ivanka and Kushner, then his love affair with Israel might be over, but it seems to be a forlorn hope.

I call foul on this. What is the point of an SME setting up a business that competes with cheap Chinese goods? China has cheap energy, a wide complement of natural resources, and only slightly more expensive labour. It has better infrastructure and economies of scale than Thailand. Banning Chinese imports to make the people but more expensive and probably inferior goods from a Thai company is no way to compete. If you are to become truly competitive, you can't do it by naked protectionism. Protectionism doesn't make you competitive, it makes you lazy. The only saving grace of capitalism is completion. Without competition we are back with a neo-feudal system with locally granted monopolies to the politically connected, while the citizens pay over the odds for crap merchandise.
