  1. 1. there's no problem with brucellosis (malta fever) in thailand??
Our cow are checked for brucellosis and TB twice a year, never had any prob, and never heard of any one else having one either.

Foot and mouth we vacinate 2 a year, there is F n M in thailand and have heared of a few cases, some not that far away ( it does not involve the wholesale slaughter of the cattle though)

Cow Pox,rabies never heard of any probs.

Peanut hay is about the best thing to feed, but expensive if you have to buy it!!

charleigh are the blonde/white cows and are mainly beef, but you can milk them as well.

goats dogs and donkeys are my thing not cows

What you do in your own time is your buisiness, i'm open minded!! :o

Water Buffalo I would think would eat about 30kg grass a day but only guessing, dont know about the rest. As for Vets i've writen a bit on that before on this thread.

  2. Hi every one, have'nt looked in for a while, so this could be a long one!!

The wife's brother is running 12 milkers and 8 calves on just 5 Rai, mind boggeling to me. He suppliments them with some "rice mash" during milking and feeds only rice straw during the day. Explains why the animals here are so thin.

They dont really put cattle out to grase here for a few reasons, usually in the day time its too hot for the cattle to be walking about in the open, hot season not a lot grows, cold season dry, wet season wet and muddy but everything grows at a tremendous rate, including all the parisite carrying insects that live in wet grass!!( a big prob here)

Most farms with the land will grow a cash crop and use the residue for feeding the cattle, as I'v said before "rice hay" is a bit like giving carboard to eat, but it does have a high fiber content, is cheap and keeps well. 12 milkers and 8 calves on 5 rai is very good here. Do you know what exactly is "rice mash" a lot of farmers mix their own food, which can consist of Man (forgot the english, but its like a big long potato, sure some one can tell me whay it is) Lamb, which is a bye product left over when they de-husk rice, Gat Beer (Beer cuttings) bye product from making beer, and a variety of dtua (nuts/beans, soy mung black ect). There are loads more depending on local avalibility and cost, never actually seen rice used though.

The Idea for growing grass is good and can be quite profitable, but a few things for you to think about, grass needs a great deal of water to grow here, if you are gowing to let catttle grase the land you have to thing about, mud, damp getting the cattle there and back, no control of the quantiy of grass eaten, my cows would prob eat about 2X the ammount of grass we give them if they could!!

If you want to cut it and bail it you are talking 4-600000 bht for a bailer, and about a mill for a tractor powerful enought to pull it, pluss staff to drive collect ect 1 rai produces about 2-300 bails of grass every 45 days which can be sold for about 15-17 bht a bail thats about 3000/rai/month which is good money, the set up costs in equipment/land development(unless your land is already rice fields) are quite high and the cuting bailing is quite labour intensive. You need an all year supply of water, but you dont have to re-plant.

Most places that I know that sell grass, form co-ops and are gov aid'ed (in terms of equipment), went to see a possible new supplier yesterday in Singburi (not Issan) good set up with around 2000 rai growing. Basicaly the gov supplies the machinery, which is then rented to the individual owners of the land, and as its a co-op there are usually lots of people to help. Mabye worth looking into if such schemes exist where you intend to live.

  3. Asked the missed what " บาป" "Baap" meant, she replied "to do bad" sounds pretty much like sin to me.

But as a devout atheist, I dont look at the word "sin" in any religious context.

  4. Sorry the last post I was thinking of the top of my head, At the moment the fuel price is about 14.7 bht for diesel, My lorry does about 1km for 3.2 bhat, it's around journt of at least 3200 km that's minimum of 10,000 in fuel and that's a 1.5 YR old Hino,

Its usually worked out by distance not weight, loked at the links were they about self drive ? cos it says "Rental Cost per Truck" nothing about fuel?

Asked my brother-in-law tonight he said about 35k. If you do self drive who brings it back, anyway best of luck. I would be intrested to know how much you get it for, PM me if you have the time or the intrest.

    Cheers RandomChances

  5. Do Welshmen manage any better than Englishmen? They ought to with expressions like yng Ngaernarfon 'in Carnarvon' and names like Angharad, but I'm by no means sure that they do manage the sound any better.

No I'm cr#p at saying it as well, think you just have to practice, and listen, then practice some more, I speak thai every day and have done for about 3 years, apart from my wife no one speaks english here.

My speaking is fair but reading and writing still are'nt up to much though!!

  6. As you are asking about learning thai, I assume that you can"nt read it, so :-

Adverb Ga ri yaa wi seet

    Adjective Kam koon na sap

    Noun Kam nam

    Verb Kam ga ri ya

Unfortunatly your Gf prob won't understand what you are saying cos there is no direct translation from writen thai-english, there are no tone marks in the above. Try to find an english thai dic, with spellings in thai as well as phonetic english, the just show your GF the word and get her to teach you.

  7. Just been looking at the map, its about 1600km Hat Yai to Chiang Mai, we have a 6 wheel'er truck/lorry about 7 ton capacity. We have done this sort of thing before when asked but its not our regular buissiness.

We usually charge about 10bht a kilo, no insurance (the lorry has but not the cargo) so that would be about 32,000 bht might give you a starting fig when negotiating.

Best bet is to ask around if someone has a truck with not a lot of work on then you should be able to get cheaper, also it does'nt matter where the lorry come from as the round trip will be about the same.

The fuel cost alone would be about 6500-7000 bht, then 2 days there 2 back 1 load/unload(minimum), prob a driver +2 if you want them to load, so thats about 3000bht +extra of food n stuff about 2000

Thats about 12000 off the top of my head.

The biggest prob would be time(if not I'd offer myself), most people with trucks run them as much as poss if they have regular routes, they might have to cancell and lose the work, just ask around see what you can find, the 32k is prob a bit much if it was quiet would prob do it for around 22-25k. If everything can fit in the back of a covered pick up or 4 wheel lorry it would be cheaper, a 10 wheel'er more expensive.

KevinN sounds like you had a good deal.

  8. I'd also like to know why Yohan was banned, ok his posts were long but a lot of people here espesialy new members, are looking for, insite's,information regaurding thailand, and while all the banter between usually established members is very entertaining, its not always helpful.

I was reading the Bangkok section the other day and someone wanted to know about accomadation in BangNa, Yohans replies very very helpful and comprehensive(long), thats his style, but a least he tries to help.

Maybye there should be a list of banned members with the moderators reason why, and possably a single post off the banned member offering a rebutal (if not offensive).

Personnaly I dont agree with much of what he writes, but he is often goaded into carrying on an argument.

I forgot who said something like "I dont agree with what you say but will fight for your right to say it."

  9. --- Admin snip ---

My sisters coming out to see me next month, and she has allready booked a week in Hua Hin at the Hilton.

I will be going down for a week, but cant really see myself paying 4000 bht a night. Any one got any ideas of hotels that are'nt to far from there, for around 1000bht.

I'll probably just drive down and book once I get there but asking cos most of you live there, and a bit of local knowlage may help. I've looked at the hotels on the link, but you cant really tell from photos

    Thanks

  10. When on "civilisation breaks" i never drink and drive, loads of taxi's tuk tuk's and motorbikes, no point taking the chance. Up here, usually let the missis drive, she rearley drinks, then its one or two bottles of Spy, but she's plastered!!(she does'nt drive then).

There's no real choice up here other than not drinking, no public transport, or even taxi's, but If your are driving back in the night, very little traffic as well, which makes things a bit easyer.

  11. I've never know imagration to check where the money came from, as long as you have a letter from your bank stating how much is in there, they have been quite happy.

A friend of mine went to do his marrige visa extension and did not have the 200,000 they told him to to borrow it of someone, put it in the bank, get the letter , then give it back.

I know what the law states, but this is just my experiance.

  12. Yohan

There is a big jump between "Yes, I drink a lot everyday" and "Little, sometimes, not much"

You are not giving people much room in between.

Most people are not alcholics or "T total" (refrain from alcholic drink), but some where in between.

  13. I would like to know officialy if there is an answer to this "can a falang be supported by his Thai wife"

I'm married, and next year could find the 400, 000 no prob but we have a buisseness in my wifes name, which provides well over the 40,000 a month, I'm wondering can we use this as proof of Income.

Just a bit of background, my wife had 34 rai of land whan we married and her mother 30, which she signed over to the wife when we married, the mother-in-law also gave us a house (nobody'd lived in it for 7 years), my wife and myself have already discussed what to do if we have any probs with my visa. i/e sell up and go back home, not that it will come to that, but it would be a lot easier just to show the income.

Does the bank account have to be in my name?, at the moment we have a joint one.

If we did sell up this would then deprive the local community of much needed income, we have 6 people working for us, and own the local shop.

  14. They do not use sugar in all Thai whiskey production as they only use some corn and mostly sticky rice at the distillery next to my house.
Whiskey is distilled "beer" made from grain, with a yeast and enzime added to cooked mash, and set to work off, then ran thru a still. QUOTE]

Yes, so If its made from rice or sugar cain it can't be whiskey.

I was talking about the generalisation that every one says "thai whisky"

It is'nt "whiskey" which is made from i think malted oats and barely, are you refering to "burbon"?

The white stuff in the bottles is Lao Chow Lao=spirit, chow=white so the closest you would get in english would be "white spirit", but as its made from rice it can't be "whiskey" even though its distilled the same, and Sang Som is rum even says so on the bottle!!

  15. Hi I'll and throw a bit of light on this for you,

Don't know that much about other areas, but Nakhorn Sawan, is a really big sugar cain pruducing area, We used to grow it ourselfs and I have truck to transport it, I dont know if it's more profitable than say rice (here they get 3 crops a year), but some land is'nt sutable for rice production, and if you can only get one crop in then I would of thought sugar would be a lot better.

Once planted it requires very little work, and will regrow for 4-6 year's without replanting, downside is its more expensive to plant, most Thais, will borrow the money from a sugar cain agent, or refinary (obviously you then have to sell to them)

All the trucks run overloaded, and wreck the smaller roads, which they try to keep to, to avoid police and kong song (which I think are ministry of transport police). Smaller police stations on route are usually given 30_50 bht a month, and you wont get any trouble.

There are weight station if you know what you are looking for, theres a few on the Asia highway, but obviously every one knows where these are and avoids going passed. The Kong Song (see above) do set up mobile weight station's and dont accept bribes!!, they can also impound your truck on the spot. The usuall way of dealing with this is to park your lorry a few hundred meters in before the stop, lock it up go and find somewhere to eat/sleep until they go home (If you see lot of trucks parked on the side of the road this is usually why).

"Thai Whiskey" is'nt whiskey, Sang Som, Mungon Tong(Lao Deang) are rums and are made from sugar cain. Loa Chow, is usually localy produced from rice, and Mehkong is also made from rice, not sure on the last one.

    Hope that helps

  16. I think that if you base 31x's post in the contex of this thread, its quite offensive to thai women and thai culture in general.

I am in NO WAY defending her. I learned about Thai culture early on, saw it first hand, and you cannot change 21 years of of cultural programming that she has experienced
I dont know any thai women who pick up 50yr old falangs outside shopping centers, and then sleep with them, this is not part of the thai culture that I know.
When you speak of "morality" and your girl doesn't have any, what you are really saying is "she doesn't have the same morals and values about life, sexuality, and relationships that I as a Westerner have, and therefore when she acts as an Easterner, I am not happy, and she is wrong."

He's saying that she sleeps around, which also, in general outside of the bar scene is not a thai womens cultural sort of thing.

One of the more sensible posts in this thread, welcome.

Just cos a thread is well writen and has big words, does'nt make it more valid than the saddos that just want to slag ever thai woman off.

  17. had the child parents named as himself and his sister
Sorry for you predicament, but how is the above possible, how can he and his sister be the parents?
Today my wife went to the Amphur office with a friend of the family who used to work in the offices to start the process of proving that she is the true blood relative/mother to her daughter, but was told that if she proceeded it is very likely she would be arrested and sent to prison for having lied to the government office when her baby was born

Sorry being cyinical, were you there, can you understand what was being said?

It has taken us until recently to obtain a copy of the "House registration document" needed for us to be able to complete the civil paperwork of our marriage, on my return; and this was by paying money to her sister in-law who's named as the mother of her daughters.
    and
of course the 8,000 baht that we paid her helped as well,

You should not have to pay that ammount, "house registration papers" (tabian ban) should be freely avalible at the Ampour, maybe if you want it done quickly a few hundred bhat.

I am sorry if I have the wrong end of the stick, but something's just don't sound right, be careful.

I hope I am wrong and all of the above have valid reasons, and if so you have my appolagies, but take care.

  18. Its important when to move to the village to tell EVERYONE some sob story

how you lost all your $$ and you are now poor. Dont flash any $$ and live

    the same as the locals.

First off this will deter any family members from trying to fleece your wife.

Your wife will be vulnerable to close family members that will dream up the

most horrific tear jerking stories to shake your wife into opening her wallet.

Once she opens it ONCE - thais will be coming out of the woodwork trying to

nail her. Be careful in your initial few months as you will be studied by

family and the locals. I even asked to borrow $$ from family members

and neighbors and wore crappy clothes. It worked very well.

Secondly, by appearing broke you will lessen the chance of the locals being

jealous of you being percieved rich. Dont ever talk about $$$ or flash $$

ESPECIALLY around the Thai-Chinese. A hatred will start boiling possibly

leading to something bad happening. They are very materialistic and envious

people. The Thai-Thai are more relaxed in this regard.

    just my 2 cents

I was just going to write a lenghty and lucid rebutal of you post.

But I'm a bit drunk and tired , In my short time on this forum, i think this is the biggest pile of Boll###ks I have seen posted, inc all the bar girl, falang women, gay men, women in general haters who just post to get a reaction.

    Just my opinion,!!
