  1. I dont see any rip off here at all. The law states what you must carry. Seems to me too many people like the OP get used to the laid back attitude here and bitch when the laws are enforced. If I had my way I wouldnt allow tourists to drive motor cycles here, licence or no licence !

One sometimes wonders if the laid back attitude to law enforcement is maintained for this very reason. To lull residents/visitors into believing they don't need to bother and then......CRACKDOWN!! :)

Hey GMAC; you are giving these civil-servants (?) a heck-of-a-lot more credit than they deserve: you are, in fact, inferring that these guys can THINK, ergo: "PLAN AHEAD" . . . . . . . . .

You're diluting yourself; BUT I like the way you think !

    :D

    Ha, ha, ha

  2. I cannot find one (the sort made by Black & Decker in the US and Europe - or anything vaguely useable) in my home area of Ubon Ratchatani and I am visiting CM this week.

I was told by an Ubon Home Hub store manager that the carpenters make their own workbenches. . Presumably not many DIY types in Isaan.

Yes; I know exactly what you re after. I am 99% certain these are sold at TrueValueHardware in both Pattaya and Chonburi.

If you like; I couldstop in at the Pattaya store and have a look as to availablity and price ?

If you're in Ubon, I could organize to send one to you from here.

Just PM me and w'll see what we can do, okay ?

    Cheers,

  3. Thai's use shovels that are nothing like what I am used to and I don't find them efficient enough for my needs. I would like to move quite a few wheelbarrow loads of dirt and wonder if a normal western shovel is sold anywhere. I did not see any at HomePro. The specs I am interested in are a long handle for a taller person, wide & rounded blade, heavy gauge steel that won't bend in clay, and a place to put your feet to lay into it. This would be the regular shovel found in the USA but I have yet to find anything like it here. A spade would be nice too, but maybe wishful thinking.

Yep; I know what you want. There's only one place and it's called TrueValueHardware. There's one in Pattaya and one in Chonburi-City. Mind you; they're not cheap, but they do have them.

If you need more info., simply PM me.

  4. I am looking for some recommendations of people that can do my kitchen and built-ins in the other various rooms. The house is completed, but just bare walls on the inside (bathrooms are mostly complete). I am leaning towards custom builds, but have also looked at what is available at Home Pro as well as a few other places.

    Any help would be appreciated!!!!

Hi; I live just off Soi European Villa and I haeactly the same requirements that you described. Found my litle joinery-workshop just around the corner here. They did our kitchen, island plus quiet a it of built-in Book-shelves and cabinets. Very reasonably priced and very nice work too.

if you're interested, just PM me and I'll point you in the right direction.

  5. I recently got a York 9000 BTU aircon fully fitted and 3 cleans within the first year for 13,000 baht

from a shop on Sukhumvit road.

Nanaphan Electric co LTD 222/15-16 moo 6 Tel : 038-716691-2

recomended to me by some aircon fitters, they buy their supplies there.

you'll pass it on the way into central Pattaya.

They have a good selection of aircon.

The workmen arrived on time and did a clean job, have had them come and clean it once so far

this aircon has been on constantly for 6 months now...no problems.

I can highly recommend "ARC", located on Sukhumvit Road. I've been here almost 18 years now and have dealt with them from the beginning. We are currently doing a 30 villa development in Stahip-District and ARC will do all the a/c work there. Total reliability and very pleasant people to deal with. Just give Raymond Bertsch a call 081 - 822 99 68

The thing is; if you want professionalism and service, you can't beat this european outfit.

    Cheers,

  6. It means that if each party upholds their obligations under the contract it is a valid contract, but if one party chooses not to, the other can seek no redress from the court.

Sort of raises the question "why bother spending the time to write such a contact, doesn't it ?" -I mean, it would be ludricous; might as well execute an agreement with the notation "Sans Prejudice" as a header . . . . . . . Total waste of timem & money !

  7. A Burmese boy born in Thailand was unable to hold back tears yesterday when the Interior Ministry refused to support his request for a Thai passport.

Wongsak said his department had to stick to the laws; if an exception were made for Mong, it would create a loophole that others could exploit.

"We must take laws and national security into account no matter how much we want to help," Wongsak said.

    Two observations here:

    1. How can a 12 year old little boy POSSIBLY represent a National Security Risk ? ? ?

    2. What about "Birth Right"; I was under te impression that if a person is born in a particular country, that that person AUTOMATICALLY has the right to CITIZENSHIP of that particular country ? Does this international law NOT apply in Thailand ???????

    :)

  8. A Burmese boy born in Thailand was unable to hold back tears yesterday when the Interior Ministry refused to support his request for a Thai passport.

Mong Thongdee, 12, needs the travel document to fulfil his dream of competing in the upcoming Origami Airplane Contest in Japan. The event takes place on September 19 and 20 in Chiba.

"I understand the authorities' decision," the boy said tearfully. "But I feel very upset."

    Passport denied

Mong has been denied Thai citizenship because his parents, though working legally in Thailand, are Burmese.

"As an alien, he may not be allowed back in to Thailand if he leaves the country," Provincial Administration Department director general Wongsak Sawaspanich said yesterday.

He said the Interior Ministry could not relax the laws for Mong, a Grade-4 student at the Ban Huai Sai School in Chiang Mai.

    Paper plane contest

Mong was invited to compete in Japan after his paper-plane design stayed airborne for more than 12 minutes to win a local contest. His school director, Duangrit Petima, then decided to help the boy by accompanying him to Bangkok to meet relevant authorities.

Aside from the Provincial Administration Department, Duangrit and Mong also called on the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

    Ministries desperate to help

Ministry spokesman Wimon Kidchob said they would issue a temporary passport for Mong only if the Interior Ministry gave its approval.

Only two non-Thai nationals had been granted such a document, said Wimon.

Wongsak said his department had to stick to the laws; if an exception were made for Mong, it would create a loophole that others could exploit.

"We must take laws and national security into account no matter how much we want to help," Wongsak said.

After hearing the discussion between Wongsak and his school director, Mong looked distraught.

"I have practised so hard. It's a huge disappointment to miss out on the trip to Japan," he said.

But he is refusing to be discouraged.

"I will continue practising. I also want to send my best wishes to the Thai representative who will be competing Japan. But I hope that one day I'll be able to travel for such contests too."

  9. what if the person overstayed more than 40 days but less than 60 days, he overstayed on non-B (non-immigrant) visa. as he is holding a work permit for 1 year and didn't know that he need to renew his non-B visa every 3 months. his overstayed was not on purpose...

What are the fines and what he need to do in respect to comeback to the country again?

    Hope for sooner reply

If you were satying in Pattaya, there would be a safe manner in which to solve your prolem, without gettig your hands all wet & moist. IF you are in Pattaya, just PM me and I will point you in the right diretion, okay ?

  10. Although he may have used the terminology of gods and demons, heavens and hells in order to communicate with the people around him, did he actually believe in other worlds and, if so, in what way?

Yes, according to A.K. Warder's Indian Buddhism (page 149): "the Buddha appears to admit the gods and God [brahma] to his scheme of the universe." The book is well-worth reading - and owning.

I don't believe in any "Religion", although Buddhism (a Life's Philosphy) is very interesting and challanging.

    Churchill once said: "For everything that happens on this earth, there's a logical explanation . . . . . . . . . . . . . and then, there's the truth !"

In that spirit (as in 'frame of mind') I can highly recommend a book written by Prof. Dr. Brian Weiss, which is titled "Many Lives, Many Masters" - It most certainly opened my eyes and I must be one

of the most skeptical persons I have ever had the pleasure of meeting . . . . . . .

  11. Hi

Get an alarm fitted. Also when they see the sign and the flasher maybe they will go for the next house

Right-On, HD - not only that, but, as a small and inexpensive addition, I strongly suggest "Panic-Buttons". In my house I have them everywhere: in the bathrooms, besides the beds, in the kitchen and the living room. All is well when you're both home, but what is my wife going to do when I am workig late ? ? She feels totally safe with this system, because she knows that when she hits any of these buttons; litterally "All hel_l Breaks Loose" ! ! ! It would be a very brve and equally stupid burglar who would NOT skoot like the Devil was on his Heels . . . .

A proper alarm-system can give you a high degree of 'peace-of-mind'.

    Cheers,

  12. Hello wilsongbrown, do you mean this one?

    http://www.jaycjayc.com/rhapis-excelsa-lady-palm/

    rice555

Hi Rice555; that is a very useful site (thank you) and a very apt description of this 'Lady-Palm'. In Thailand it is commonly known as "Jung" (pronounce: Tsjung).

We have a few hundred of them around our home. These can be grown in pots (fairly large) and Jung can grow to about 2.5~3 meters (in our experience). They do love their water and it is particulairly important to 'mist'-spray their stems, which have a natural 'absorption-material' around them. They don't really like total exposure to the bright sun, but rather semi-shade.

In fact; within the grouns of Cabbages & Codoms here in Pattaya, they have them growing under large trees in a sort-of "rain-forest" garden, where they thrive.

    Beautiful trees/plants ! ! !

    Cheers,

    JGK/Pattaya

  13. I had a well dug in the garden 5 years ago. Best 70,000 baht I ever spent.

I was spending about 1000 baht a month on water at the time, as we have a large garden and had a lot of new trees and grass to nurture. I suspect our water bill would be less now anyway, but we often have water shortages where I live in Pattaya - and with the well we always have water.

In fact as I live at the top of a small hill in our village, befeore we had the well, when there was a drop in water power for whatever reason, water often did not reach us at the top of the hill at all - or was just a trickle!

    Dear 'dsfbrit',

I hate to be the bearer of bad news and thus dampening your mood of exhiliration, but under Thai Law, ALL wells must be properly registered. An approved water-volume-measuring device ('water-meter') must be installed and the amount of water used must be paid for to the local government, on amonthly basis.

I realize that there must be many illegally operated water-wells in Thailand, but like everything else; there are NO shortcuts in Thailand; eventually, the "rules" will catch-up with people and then you might not wish to have had this well for 5 years, since the fine imposed shall be in accordance with the length of the legal infraction, in other words "severe" (by simple ay of "their" assesment of your usage").

Solar Hot Water Systems; if purchased for something around the Tbt. 60K, will have an ROI of about 6~7 years (well worth it, therefore !), whereas Solar PV-systems are still way too lengthy an investment due to the (still) relativally low cost of electricity in Thailand.

If you're interested in affordable Solar Hot Water, just PM me anytime you like and I'll point you in the right direction, okay ?

    Cheers,

  14. Eastern seaboard residents, it seems to me, from reading the news, that nearly all of the factories are located in your area. Do you think they should move? If so to where and would a move even be feasible? Is it possible to make them clean up?

How do you feel about the industry in your area?

You're either Irish or Belgian . . . . . what a "brilliant"suggestion": cripple that little amount of business which is fueling that little of the 'left-over' economy ?!?!?!?!

Fabulous timing: you got nothing better to do, mate ?

    :)

  15. Just a helpful tip for all you weary, hungry travelers out there who may find yourselves stumbling into Suewannaboom for the first time and bewildered by all the food choices -- not to mention shocked by all the exorbitant prices!

Notwithstanding JohnBGood's silly remarks about spelling/phonetics (there MUST be another forum for "spelling-Morons") what an excellent piece of useful information, Relayer; I've been through there many times and you have told me something I (and I'm sure many others) did not know: THANK YOU !

  16. My wife (Thai citizen) and I (U.S. citizen) are sick of rent payments and want to begin investing in our own home. Our income comes through a U.S. bank as I do my work online and my wife isn't employed. I haven't done all the research yet, but I kind of doubt a Thai bank is going to give us a loan. I'm thinking about checking with some U.S. banks to see if they would finance a mortgage in Thailand. Anyone have any experience with this? My father has substantial assets and is willing to cosign, but are banks willing to do this? I know it takes substantial preparation to get home assessments, flood assessments, and paperwork such as this so it sounds complicated. Thanks for the advice.

It would help to know where about in Thailand you would be desirous ofowning a home ? If you would consider the metro-Pattaya area, there may be a bright light at the end of your tunnel. Simly PM me for the information.

  17. Thats fine barky but are you honestly suggesting that anyone that might have either a ladyboy or police officer in their extended thai family should do what? Leave home because of it? Ask the family to disown that member? Perhaps organise a 'hit'?

Get real, I have one of each in the immediate extended family, they both appear quite decent, neither of them work on the street & both are very polite and respectable.

Going by your biggoted tones my life is in danger because of them. As for the transexual, as I also have a young boy in the extended family who is only 7 but clearly very ladyboy like already, I can imagine you would re-examine your ideas if you were in the same situation.

A few hundred years ago there were people roaming the streets speaking about black people in very much the same manner. Its disgusting.

Hey; Neverdie: I am 100% behind you ! OF COURSE one should never ever "judge a book by it's cover". We're all human beings and - as I have said before, when you're born a 'male', but inside you feel decidedly 'female', than that it is surely not something you have asked for. Hence; this "Nature's Error in Packaging" ('cause that is exactly what it is!) - is luggage you'll have to carry around with you your whole entire life . . . . Maybe some readers should realize these facts, before they "judge" fellow human beings.

For me; I have nothing but sympathy and compassion for these people and I am proud to be able to count some within my extended Thai family.

Instead of being judgemental about "LadyBoys", try to be more understanding and think, for one minute, that this was YOUR fate in this life . . . . . .

  18. Very Interesting......

Written by Zola Gorgon - author of several cookbooks..

Watch out for those spoiled onions...

I had the wonderful privilege of touring Mullins Food Products, makers of

mayonnaise. Mullins is huge, and is owned by 11 brothers and sisters in the

Mullins family. My friend, Jeanne, is the CEO.

Questions about food poisoning came up, and I wanted to share what I

    learned from a chemist.

The guy who gave us our tour is named Ed. He's one of the brothers. Ed is a

chemistry expert and is involved in developing most of the sauce formula.

He's even developed sauce formula for McDonald's.

Keep in mind that Ed is a food chemistry whiz. During the tour, someone

asked if we really needed to worry about mayonnaise. People are always

worried that mayonnaise will spoil. Ed's answer will surprise you.

Ed said that all commercially-made Mayo is completely safe.

"It doesn't even have to be refrigerated. No harm in refrigerating it, but

it's not really necessary." He explained that the pH in mayonnaise is set at

a point that bacteria could not survive in that environment. He then

talked about the quaint essential picnic, with the bowl of potato salad

sitting on the table and how everyone blames the mayonnaise when someone

    gets sick.

Ed says that when food poisoning is reported, the first thing the officials

look for is when the 'victim' last ate ONIONS and where those onions came

from (in the potato salad?). Ed says it's not the mayonnaise (as long as

it's not homemade Mayo) that spoils in the outdoors. It's probably the

onions, and if not the onions, it's the POTATOES. He explained, onions are

a huge magnet for bacteria, especially uncooked onions.

You should never plan to keep a portion of a sliced onion. He says it's not

even safe if you put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in your refrigerator.

It's already contaminated enough just by being cut open and out for a bit,

that it can be a danger to you (and doubly watch out for those onions you

put in your hotdogs at the baseball park!)

Ed says if you take the leftover onion and cook it like crazy you'll

probably be okay, but if you slice that leftover onion and put on your

sandwich, you're asking for trouble. Both the onions and the moist

potato in a potato salad, will attract and grow bacteria faster than any

commercial mayonnaise will even begin to break down.

So, how's that for news? Take it for what you will. I (the author) am going

to be very careful about my onions from now on. For some reason, I see a

lot of credibility coming from a chemist and a company, that produces

millions of pounds of mayonnaise every year..'

Also, dogs should never eat onions. Their stomachs cannot metabolize onions.

NOW, I DID NOT KNOW THAT!!!! DID YOU???

  19. Need to pick up about 700 of them.

    Thanks.

You can go with Q-Blocks,but we'e just found a great ew product called EKOBLOK. Made in Thailand and 10% less in price, but:

    1. Better K-Value (ThermalInsulation)

    2. Better Sound-Insulation charactaristics

    3. Far better structural value (single-storey dwellings: no Post/Beam required !)

    4. Can cut with normal wood-saw

    5. Less Water-Absorption (means no cracks in the rendering)

    6. Can be laid with standard mortar no need for expensive adgesion-additives)

    7. Eco-Responsible in production and content

All around a better product - and much less expensive in erms of product and installation.

PM me anytime fo a 'comparison-table' between EKOBLOK and the 'other' two products on the market in Thailand.

    Have a look on their web-site: www.ekoblok.co.th

Incidentally; we are Project Developers with actvities around the world.

  20. Does anyone know where to park your car in Ban Phe while going to koh Samed

    Barry

    Hin Barry,

This is a very easy qustion: when driving south on the 'Promenade' (for a lack of a better word; the only road parallel to the sea), you will notice that there are two (2) piers which are in the business of shipping people to the Island. Forget about the Northern-most pier; but take the next one South. Simply drive-in and they will direct you to the vast parking-area.

It may pay you to buy one of those fod-out reflector screens, which you shouldplace behind your front windshield, just to keep-out the sun beating down on your dash-board, okay ?

    Cheers,

    JGK/Pattaya

  21. I am considering installing a solar energy system to produce hot/warm water. Total cost incl installation is 70,000 Baht. According to the information I received, payback is in about 8-10 years, with a saving of 8000 Baht per month (2MHh per year saved).

Payback period still seems long, not sure about maintenance and repair costs.

    Would welcome views/suggestions.

HiMartinCVS; I don't know where you get your Bt. 8000.- savings-per-month from, but that depends on how much hot water one uses, obviously.

The avarage person uses about 160 Liters of hot water per day. That is water at a (mixed) temp. of about 40 degrees C.

The avarage 4 pax family in an avarage 3 bedroom home will spend approx. 25~35% of their overall Power-Bill on Hot Water (similar to the outgoings for Airconditiong, by the way).

A good basic, but well constructed Solar Hot Water System (with immersion-heater) should cost you about Bt. 50~60 K in Baht and would be sufficient to service that avarage home as described above.

Of course, if there are bathtubs in every bathroom AND people using these on a daily basis, things will be vastly different.

Another thing is that "ugly tank" on the roof; this is not necessary, since this tank (without the need foor a SS mantle = save money !) can also be installed under the roof in the attick space, as long as it is positioned HIGHER than the solar-collector-panel(s) which is/are on top of the roof and preferably facing South.

ROI (Payback) would be about 5~7 years, but mor importantly; your household would contribute to the environment by a reduction of some 2 metric tons of CO2 per year ! !

If you are interested in a system like this, drop me a PM and I will put you in touch with a European Engineered and manufactured system, 'made-in-Thailand'

    Cheers,

    JGK/Pattaya

  22. Hi can anyone tell me the where abouts of some decent seafood restaurants in Pattaya or Jomtien, my husband and i have been coming to pattaya for a number of years now and have always been disapointed with the seafood restaurants that we have been in for example the lobster pot etc. we are coming for a month in november so would like to know where they are or any new restaurants that have opened recently. :)

If you want to have an expeience of a life-time: it's called ORIENTAL STAR and it's a converted Hong-Kong ferry. You go to Bali-Hi Pier and park your car. Walk to the beginning of the pier and look for a kiosk )you can't miss it) bearing the name Oriental Star. Tellthe girl you want to dine on the ship and they'll drive you in a VIP Tuk-Tuk to the endof the pier. There, you are shutteled by motor-boat to the big boat (takes no more than a few minutes). You thenmke your way to the top-deck, were yo'll find a beuatiful cool breeze; lovely setting, stuning views to Pattaya-City and superb life-music, which is tastefully done, so you can still hear yourself talk.

The food is superb as well and they have a very vast menu, not only with Seafood (huge choice) but also steaks, cordon-bleu, chops; whatever you desire.

A truly unforgetable evening, without even 1 mosquito and the biggest surprise is the bill: very, very affordable ! ! !

Take it from me: this is a typical MUST do, in Pattaya; especially if you know about it, which many (even locals) do not.

    Have a great time,

    Cheers

    JGK/Pataya

  23. I have been to Thailand many times before and I know what is best for me and I know that last time I was getting too much attention from vendors, touts and the working girls and it made my walks frustrating. With empty bars, shops and taxis.... I am sure I would be that much more bothered so I am going to wait till there are more fish in the sea as it were.

Silly or not, I made my choice and I am happier for it :D

Paul; I have read this entire thread. I have lived/worked in Pattaya for almost 18 years. I can come to only one simple conclussion:

You are obviously a 'Moron of Epic Proportions'

    :)

Get some help, if it is not too late already !

ED: Please close this thread, thank you !
