Where did they get these reports from? Who issued these reports? If they have been "receiving" reports like these for quite a while, and they were credible, then why didn't anything ever happen in Pattaya or Phuket? EVER!!
Very simple, they signed, sealed and delivered those reports themselves. Just like the americans, they always know something will happen based on "chatter". Cry wolf comes to mind...

Vikingen ? ? Why so very derogatory towards "the Americans" - must have a short memory: whenever there was any serious trouble in this world, the Americans were there first to sort-out the mess for all the rest of us, and all the while (before, during and after) subjected to the "scorn" of many . . . .
Well; this Viking ( and I am a real one !) for one, is very grateful to the Americans, since I didn't have to grow up speaking German . . . . . .
I owe a great debt to the Americans and state anything other than that would be totally insincere !

What unpleasant individuals you are!!!! If you don't like the races here don't stay. Go back to where you come from. I doubt anyone would miss you or is it that your own home countries don't want you either.
At the end of the day all life is important no matter where you come from and these two girls have a right, even in death, to have the murderer found and punished.
====================================================================
Hey; JoSkyDive - you just said what most decent people were thinking after they read that rubbish. Good on you and I agree with you verbatum !

If it involves violence and Russians then it's usually not random at all. I bet there's a lot more to this.
================================================================
Yeap; Wintermute; I believe you are correct; of course there's more to this story that what we've heard sofar. I've lived and worked in Pattaya for almost 15 years now and I can tell you that there have been some pretty incredible encounters involving Russian citizens here.
As a rule; it is mostly kept "between Russians" and I would be surprised if this will not turn-out to fall into that same catagory.
Likely scenario could be: two Russian hookers (and there are litterally hundreds of them here !?) no longer desoire to pay-off their Russian pimps; these guys are not the pick-nick type and will go through extreme lengths to "save face" with regards to the rest of their "flock" . . . . tatsteless business, no kidding !

Anyone knows smoke can kill you, but the cubic volume of air in there means it would need to be something big to fill it with smoke. A kitchen fire or an electrical panel wouldn't hardly make a dent in that volume.
What airport in the world is carpeted?
==========================
You've obviously never been to Singapore, Vancouver, Chicago, Sidney, Auckland, or any major airport in the Middle East ? ? ! !
You also obviously know very little about toxicity: it doesn;t take much to create a "cloud" of toxic smoke; which WILL kill very quikcly.
Don't talk about things you have (obviously) no knowledge of.
-
There is no point in reasoning with a group of people who go around cutting off the heads of women and children. you have two choices, give them what they want, and hope they dont want more once it is given, or get used to the violence. you can try fighting them, but it is just going to create more of them.

This is what I don't understand: almost everybody on this forum is 'ripping' into the religious aspects of this issue, but I have yet to hear one (1) person actually calmly analyse this phenomena. Interesting and hence, no wonder there's so much friction in the world we have created. Make no mistake about it: WE have created all this friction, be it through fanatic religions or whatever.
Okay; going back in time, only about 80~90 years: the area we now refer to as "The Restive South" used to consist of three seperate, exclusive and sovereign Sultanates, each headed by it's own Sultan. Through war & intrugue, these three sovereign entities simply "disappeared" and are today, the Southern three provinces of Thailand.
Does anyone here agree with me, that it is possibly THIS which is causing the "unrest" in the south ? Does anyone here agree with me, that possibly these people simply want back what was rightfully theirs to begin with; I mean - it's not as if they have been getting a heck of a lot of support, help, funding, schooling-aid et all from the Thai government, hey ? Also; the fact that here's no mineral resources there' just a few rubber plantations & nut trees . . . . . .
Beginning to sound a bit like that unsolvable situation in the Middle East, with the one BIG difference, that IF the Thai's would hand these people back their land; there would hardly be any serious consequences to anyone; apart from the fact that the killings would surely cease . . . . . .
Also think; what a great tourist attraction would three Sultanates make ? ? ? ? Beats all those two-tier-priced Crocodile farms . . . . . . .

Two guys come rushing out of the jungle and begin, what you think, is an attack on you.
In self defense, you brandish that knife your carrying for cleaning your fingernails and attempt to put up a defense as best you can.
Survival instincts take over, your out numbered, stabbing motions are made on TWO thugs who are attempting to perhaps, cause great bodily harm to you. You see a flash of metal waving about..."oh my god there going to kill me"
Your honor, what the defendant thought he saw, was not the badges of the officers, but a weapon of sorts, possilby a stabbing instrument flailing around. Hence his natural response of self defense.
Your honor, any person faced with this onslaught of sheer fear and terror would do the very same thing.
I respectfully request that the charge of assault be dismissed your honor, as it was committed during an act of self defense.

Naaaahhhh; you got that all wrong; the good Swiss man was just about to peel an orange (Vitamin-C ! !) and just then, these "thugs" came at him. Of course his "Swiss Army Knife" was already open en the mufty-cop simply "walked into it" . . . . . . . . could happen to any of us, hey ? ? ? ?
Personally I don't find his "citizenship" or his "Nationality" a very interesting issue; but as a human being I reckon, he has failed misserably.
Incidentally; some poster suggested he would have 'earned' 10 years in the slammer; forget it mate; with those kinds of charges he's looking at at least three (3) times that term.

Well if these airlines want to operate out of it they must think it is safe.
================================================================
It's remarkable that nobody has ever brought up the slight detail called "Airline Insurance Liability". It is my understanding that the large underwriters of this world (there aren't many) carry he insurance for plane, crew and contents. Somewhere in the fine-print of these elaborate policies, features a clause which refers to the proper and dully established certifications with reference to the various airports where these carriers land and take-off from. I believe that the very moment the FAA 'vetoes' the new Bangkok Airport (for obviously very sound reasons) than the entire argument is going to be very shortlived.
As ususal; in this entire sage, the whole thing boils down to $$$$$: if the airlines have to revert back to Don Muang, then this is going to be one heck of a big expense to these carriers. Logic would dictate, that the State would have to fit the bill. Of course; the State doesn't want to fit this horrendous bill. Hence this little vicious circle we are now foinding ourselves in.
Hope the new PM can get the lead out and the various lazy/arrogant butts into gear, otherwise, overseas visitors to Thailand will have to land in, say Singapore and simply hop the train to Bangkok. This would be of great interest to the seperatists in "The South" ~ read: nice juicy new targets . . . . . . . .
Everything is inter-related ~ interesting ain't it ? ? ? ?
Meanwhile; Thaksin is studying the "Kangaroo-Style" of governing . . . . . thus deserving the new nick-name: "THE HAPPY HOPPER"

Well although the intent is good, but I think it will come to a sudden halt when they suddenly realize the check that they are talking about costs a significant amount of money. Whoever is already skimming the funds will have no part of that I am sure. So with that said 60-20-20 on this one.
===============================================================
Not only that, John; but I feel very strongly, that the current powers would be far more productive, if they spent similar energy on some serious convictions w.r.t. Thaksin & his (very many !) cronies !
Geez; where are the "priorities" of mthese people ? ? ? ? ?
In Canada we have a saying: "He bent-over to pick-up a dime, but didn;t notice a $20-bill falling out of his back-pocket" . . . sure appears to be the case here, hey ?!

"Considering the problems we have now at Suvannabhumi Airport and the number of passengers are increasing, the Cabinet decided that Don Muang Airport will be re-opened and Bangkok will have two international airports."
At least somebody who 'dares' to state some simple truths. I am involved in the tourism biz in Pattaya and I can tell you with gret certainty, that I reckon "incoming tourism" is down at least 50% as opposed to last year.
On the Suvarnabuhmi Airport; I reckon they should stop all incoming flights there a.sa.p., with the exception of ONE (1) flight . . . . . . . . yep; you guessed it; Toxin's fabulous return to his homeland; just have to make sure there are lots of devices; machines and heaps of soil on all the cracked runways . . . . . . . naaahhh; don;t feel sorry for the chap; they almost always find the black-box, don't they ? ? ? ? ? ?

Ever since I arrived here on my non o visas I've been pestered to go and teach at the local schools here in La Un, Ranong. Despite pleas of I'm not a teacher, and even a blunt no. It was you speak English, you do it. Of late the cetang has finally dropped, and all I get now is occaisionally kids asking for help with homework. The so called Thai English teachers in the 4 schools that approached me, can not hold a conversation in the language the are supposedly teaching. So if a native English teacher wishes to teach if approached by the local primary schools. What's the problem. Just get the police to do a check with the police in his/her native country. At least the kids would get an ear for how the language is used, and not just be limited to "Hello" and "What is your name?", the dissolving into a fit of giggles.
===========================================================
And with that little piece you just put down there, Mr. Mosha; you have simply nailed it squarly on the head ! ! !
"Teachers" should be polled on their ability to "teach"; super qualifications are secondairy. Goes without saying that a simple background check should be performed to ensure the individual's integrity.
I also believe that a little school in the country-side is not to be compared with the phenomena of the "International Schools" - you know; those money-making institutions in & near the larger cities in Thailand.
But if total non-teachers like yourself get a little bit involved, the kidds in La Un, near Ranong, will have far better English language skills then their much richer counterparts in the tennis-playing International School communities . . . . . .
Good on you ! ! !

i know bugger all about teaching english but in 20 years as programmer and manager in the computer business, i can tell you there is no correlation betweeen college degrees and ability to do a good job.
also, why do they equate not having a degree with pedophiles and criminal behavior! what's the basis for that.
steve
=================================================================
Steve; I totally agree with what you said; ergo: I happen to know, that if the teaching of English language-skills is left to Thai teachers (and I say this with utter respect for ANY teacher !) then we can forget any progress in the english language-skills of Thai students !
Even a socalled "non-qualified" foreign English teacher, will have a much more beneficial effect on Thai students English language abilities then the alternative Thai native English teachers.
Who was it who said: "Talent alone is not omnipotent; without ambition, talent is useless" ?
In other words; a person who is enthousiastic in his endeavour to teach Thai students the English language, at least in my book, will be much more effective than a person loaded with the right qualifications, but who'ld rather be sailing . . . . . .
The other important factor is; young Thai's do so desperately NEED proper English instruction, if they wish to get ahead in this world which puts so much emphasis on IT & Communications !
Anyone disagreeing should replay that CNN interview with the ex Prime Minister of this Nation, a "Dr." none the less; an individual who attained the rank of Pol. Col. and a "worldwide communicator" - I'll tell you; his English is abominable, to say the very least ! ! !

Well 2006 will be unforgettable, but based on what happened, it might be best to forget it and not remind people about it.

Until the government of Thailand can rectify the errors of their ways with specific regards to the Foreign Biz. Law, the ludricous Visa-Laws and the absurd Farang-House/Land-Ownership issues, more and more Frarang would prefer to think of Thailand as "FORGETTABLE THAILAND" and take their hard-earned cash elsewhere.

Hey AUSSIEMIKE, you sure are a bit of an enigma:
You start of with stating the obvious:
Another nautical expert --!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yacht ---- ya well believe it or not - yacht's do have
sails as well as a motor infact some yachts dont have sails - called a motor yacht --- you landlubber!!!!!!
Then you come-up with a brilliant definition and heritage piece on "Yacht":
A yacht (From Dutch Jacht meaning "hunt") was originally defined as a light, fast sailing vessel used by the Dutch navy to pursue pirates and other transgressors around and into the shallow waters of the Low Countries. After its selection by Charles II of England as the vessel of choice to return to Britain from Holland for his restoration, it came to be used to convey important persons (see under History below)
Then you begin to lose confidence and change into a questioning party:
He could not send out SOS because of storms the most stupid answer I ever heard A Yacht with out a radio that works in storms.
Have you ever heard of radio that does not work because there is a storm, I haven't
Followed by the most bizarre explanation of "Motor-Yachts" - I mean: what's up with this fabrication of nonsense ? ? "the motor yacht contains sufficient living space for at least several days at sea." ? ? ? ?
Motor yachts, on the other hand, still retain more of the original sense of power and luxury. Much larger and generally far more expensive than the average sailing yacht, the motor yacht contains sufficient living space for at least several days at sea. Overall length generally starts at over 30 feet (9 m) and goes up to well over a hundred feet (30 m). Luxury yachts, such as the one owned by Larry Ellison, can reach over 450 feet (135m), the size of a small cruise ship. The 412 ft (125 m) Royal Yacht Britannia (a steam yacht) has been retired from service and is now on permanent exhibit at Leith.

How about the positive impacts?
You mean positice impacts for Thaksin or for the country ? ? ? ? ? ?
If you meant the latter; then you must possess very dense grey-matter, my friend !
This chap Thaksin is nothing more than a thief, albeit on a very grand scale; but still a common thief ! !
Another one blinded by hate.
Things are never that simple. Under Thaksin's reign some of the most memorable human rights violations have been committed, no doubt about that.
On the other hand, without Thaksin Thailand would most definately still wait for its first national health system. A side effect from Thaksin's reliance on voter based power he had to draw previously neglected sectors of society - the rural poor - into the political decision making process. And as the first PM ever in Thailand - with something that at least resembles at a policy based platform in addition to the usual personalised and backdoor politics.
Let me assure you, that I am most certainly NOT blinded by hate. I believe, though, after reading your "arguments" that you are surely blinded by total ignorance: you write "without Thaksin Thailand would most definately still wait for its first national health system" - mate; what the keck are you refering to ??? The idiotic and totally bankrupt "30 Baht-Scheme" perhaps ? ? ? ?
Geeeez; I certainly hope your wife controls your bank-accounts, because you're obviously unfit for sound judgements of any kind ! ! !
Oh; and by the way: "Things are very often that simple" eventhough they'll never be as simple as you . . . . . . . .

I'm impressed.
It seems that a third of the posters here seem to defend ######sin, and the most commonly used argument is: others do it, too.
You're real smart guys, I must admit. I'll now rape your little sister, but don't take it personally, others do it, too.
Thaksin severely abused his power, resulting in death and corruption, any attempt to play it down can only be made by brainwashed morons.
You mean "Morons of epic proportions" right ?!
I couldn;t agree with you more ! ! !

From a Global standard the actions of the Thai people and The Kingdom itself represents a ceasation in the downward trend of impressions Thailand had become to endure.
Thailand from my experience
(and I have travelled fairly extensively) is about its people.
Being represented by an obvious deviant does not go unnoticed on the world stage.
The "either your with us or against us" tirade by the warmonger Bush said more than I can ever say, the world is becomong split..
By having the courage to remove this person from office dictates volumes to the rest of the world.
The Baht is getting stronger not weaker and that says a lot right there.
It is high time that Thailand and it's people stop being the victim and act, and they have started to do just that.
Foriegn investment and growth will change Thailand no doubt and probably some of those changes will not be so convenient. Alas, we are all living in a changing reality and it is far far better that Thailand be on the upswing than the way it was headed under the previous regime.
The political model was nothing new. The neocons and many other right wing opressive governments have done the same thing to weaken the power structure of the respective governing bodies.
Sell what the people have purchased, use up the profit in a one time switcheroo and take kickbacks from the sale of public entities to endulge in shameless profiteering on the backs of the citizenry.
Sure, the installation of a new government will take time, and the pessimism and naysayers will whine about this and that, as this site is a prime example.
But in my opinion the Thai people and it's fantastic reality can rest assured they will be in far better shape in the future than they ever could have been if this person had not been removed from office.
I am quite sure there are far more nasty things Mr. Thaksin accomplished while in office than reported here. To see this type of individual booted out by the military shows why Thailand is not only smart enough to acknowledge the situation, but a leader in the world by having the kahoonas to throw the bum out!
Many countries in this world wish they had this kind of oppurtunity.
Long Live the King!
Brilliantly worded; hmmmmm, a voice of reason and intelligence . . . . . . . Canadian huh ? I am NOT suprised ! ! !

can you stop a Thai citizen from returning?
=================================================================
I never thought I would think this, but there are rumours abound, that Toxin, while taking a shower, dropped his bar of soap and by bending over backwards, had an unfortunate slip and fell in such a way, that he sadly died, virtually instantly . . . . . . .
On the other hand; this would go a long way in solving a number of pressing problems. Of course; he would get a full State Funeral with all the trimmings, duuhhh !
-
I fully understand why it's been done..
The fact is though that no one will bother enforcing this law outside of the large cities and tourist areas probably, if it is enforced at all...
The problem is that the younger tourist from overseas go on holiday and like to have a party, and it's these younger adults that will return to Thailand year after year, eventually with their family, spending all their hard earned money.
The thought of a 24 year old adult from USA/Europe/Aus etc.. not being able to buy alcohol is ridiculous... and ridiculous enough for these adults to find somewhere else to go.
totster
==================================================================
Totster: you took the words right out of my mouth.
The other element, which everyone seems to overlook here, is that NOT everybody (regardless of age !) consumes alcoholic beverages for the purpose of getting "blotto" (= "pissed-drunk"). All you have to do, is go look around France, where, traditionally, children at the dinner-table get a small glass of "Vin-D'Endroit" (=inexpensive, but excellent "Wine-Of-The-Region") with each and every evening meal. In other words, these kids grow-up without the burden of having to "sneak" alcohol.
Incidentally (and I am definately not a 'Fan-of-France', but France IS the #1 country in the world, with the least occurance of heart-related medical problems.
Now: by law, a person becomes an "adult" when he/she reaches the age of "consent" which is 18. This is also the age, where -in case of armed conflict- young people are drafted into the man's armies . . . . . So; here it is: you are allowed to die for your country, but you're not allowd to have a beer ? ? ? ?
Absurd law; instead, my advice would be to "educate" the children of this nation - and while they're at it, include things like Traffic-Rules - Littering !
Bon voyage,

I've never understood the need for alcohol to be advertised.
It's like saying ...... sshhhhhh if they don't see it on Television they'll never know about it.

That's so right, I mean: what difrence does it make anyway ? ? ? Zilch, in my book.
But if they believe it will make traffic safer, perhaps they'ld better think again.

Huge news. I had seen a few reports that said if he wasn't convicted of any wrong-doings he still has a following in the NorthEast and could try a come back. Looks like he just wants to enjoy all the stolen funds and work towards staying out of jail.

Make no mistake about it; this character may have resigned (Big Deal ! !) he may be DOWN, but he sure as heck is not yet OUT . . . . . . .
The only time I will 'trust' that Tahksin will no longer take part or attempt to take part in Thai politics, is when I know that he's pushing-up daisies somewhere ! ! ! Not a moment sooner !
Please don't overlook the fact that this guy's lost face BIG, no BIG time and that he has a war-chest which is more than formidable . . . . . . he reckons "where there's a will, there's a way" and big money does talk, so be worried, be really worried . . . . . .

as someone already said, from outside thailand the international community are very concerned about thailand..
you ethier are democratic or your're not...and at this current time thailand is no longer democratic

Yeah; right: under Thaksin we were "enjoying" a great period of 'democracy' ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
The new Interim PM IS a civilian ! He USED to be a militairy career chap.
What the heck's your problem ?!?!?
Count your blessing and hope & pray that Toxin (he may be down, but is he OUT ?????) does not re-appear . . . . . . if you care to read the papers: Tbt. 400 Billion of the Kingdom's coffers squandred ! ! ! what a great democracy THAT was.

It's only a nuisance if an when you have something to hide !
Many Western-European Int. airports have been practising this (pax-manifest-scanning) for many years and thus procedures have been able to be performed much more efficiently and speedy.

So, a tourist comes here on a long haul flight to Bangkok for 30days. After a few days in Bangkok he decides to take a trip to Ankor Wat using Thailand as his home base. He then takes a trip to Burma for a few days then returns. He then takes a trip to Laos and returns.
He then decides to go to See Singapore of Kuala Lumpur.... On his return to Bangkok he is refused entry as that means a 4th Visa on Arrival. He cannot continue his holiday with a final week in Phuket and has to spend a week in the Airport Lounge waiting to catch his flight home.
As a business man I always used Bangkok as a base for covering the Far East, returning there at weekends and between meetings in different nearby Countries, as do many others becuase it is cheaper and the food is great. We rely on tourist Visas on arrival as we are not doing Business in Thailand. I hope that this is just another crazy idea which similar to others in the past will not be fully implemented.
I am married to a Thai with three children, but currently rely on tourist visas, as I work 70 days in Libya and 17 days vacation in Bangkok. However, there is another twist that I need to make a side trip during my Vacation to Kuala Lumpur to collect my Libyan Visa which is already 2 VOAs in 2 weeks. I had a marriage and Own Company Visa before, but the problem is thye take too many visits to the immigration Bureau before they finally give you the stamp, and I am not here to go to the office. On top of that there is all the hassle of a reentry visa. I hope that we get a clearer picture soon.
One of the few visa types not mentioned in all of this is the Transit Visa, which might provide you with a methodolgy, though I'm not sure at first glance if it's workable given the strictures you list. Ironically it can provide up to 30 days cover, but it is a single pass through visa defined by entry and exit criteria.

First of all; I can see where a person can get down on his/her luck. However; to resort to begging-on-the-street, I find totally abhorent. I'm also a Dutchman and I am thoroughly ashamed of this guy's behaviour.
Surely he can call on his relatives/friends in Holland to get enough dosh together to return home !?! (and there, go straight back on the dole !)
Secondly; "chrisspursbkk1" you are sorely mistaken if you think that "getting arrested" by the Immigration Police would automatically result in the subject's deportation to his home-country. The truth of the matter is a bit more dramatic: they'll lock you up in the Immi-Jail and then they will wait until someone comes-in with enough money for the Fine & the Air-Ticket home. This could take a heck-of-a-lot of time, when yoy're considering morons like the one in this particular story . . . . . . .
