Aside from everything else, many insurers will no longer cover you in Thailand. Most travel agents won't recommend you travel to a place with a travel warning. So is the "junta’s political intervention a threat to the nation’s tourism sector"? It may not be fatal but it strikes a grievous body blow to something that is 7% of the economy.
...Aside from everything else, many insurers will no longer cover you in Thailand...
I don't believe that to be the case at all. If you read the Product Disclosure Statement and go the Exclusions section you will find that most policies will say they wont cover if ... your claim arises because you did not follow advice in the mass media or any government or other official body’s warning:
• against travel to a particular country or parts of a country; or
• of a strike, riot, bad weather, civil protest or contagious disease (including an Epidemic or Pandemic); and you did not take appropriate action to avoid or minimise any potential claim under your policy (including delay of travel to the country or part of the country referred to in the warning).or your claim arises from any act of war, whether war is declared or not or from any rebellion, revolution, insurrection or taking of power by the military.
So if you got injured in a riot or standing in the middle of a protest march or trying to run a roadblock then sure, you wont be covered. But if you tripped over one of the many uneven footpaths or got mugged at night by a bag snatcher, you would be covered because the injury was not related to the martial law.
Of course different companies have different wording but most ones I've looked at are similar to this. The point is, just because Martial Law is declared it does not necessarily invalidate travel insurance. It just means any claims will be scrutinised more closely as to the cause

What a load of misinformed clowns most of you are. Col Sanders' image was modeled on a Southern Plantation owning slave trading member of the KKK. Not much difference between him and Hitler. He was actually an insurance salesman and not a colonel.
Better start burning your Hugo Boss suits, he designed the Nazi uniform etc.etc.
Put your red nose on. The title "Kentucky colonel" was first formalized in 1813, but was in informal use before that to refer to people with honored reputations, often related to military service in the American Revolution. It was often associated with landowners respected in their communities. Early colonels served military roles in the state. In the latter part of the 19th century, the position took on a more ceremonial function. Colonels in uniform attended functions at the Governor's mansion and stood as symbolic guards at state events. By the late 19th century, the title had become more of an honorary one. This is rarely used, however; Kentucky colonels are usually just referred to and addressed as "Colonel". In writing, usage is Kentucky colonel when the term is not being used as a specific title for an individua
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kentucky_Colonel
His jobs in insurance were before Sanders managed a gas station where he served food and later franchised it.
He was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel in 1935 by Kentucky governor Ruby Laffoon. His local popularity grew, and in 1939 food critic Duncan Hines visited Sanders's restaurant and included it in Adventures in Good Eating, his guide to restaurants throughout the US.
Yes you're right it is BS title without any power or authority. Now give me the low down on Hugo Boss and all the other Nazi Companies that are still in operation.
I was just saying his image is modeled on a plantation owner when he sold insurance and worked at a gas station.
If you had said land owner instead of slave owner I would have agreed with you. Hitler drove Ford trucks when he invaded Poland and Ford is doing OK and I believe GM got war reparations because Opal was bombed during WWII.
Interestingly, Ford is accused of breaching the Geneva Convention during WW2 by running Ford-Werke with slave labour. Fords anti-Semitic views sat well with his Nazi clients. n July 1938, before the outbreak of war, the German consul at Cleveland gave Ford, on his 75th birthday, the award of the Grand Cross of the German Eagle, the highest medal Nazi Germany could bestow on a foreigner.

Soutpeel, you really are a tosser. 14,000+ comments and the best you can cotribute is "stay in your own country". As i am sure your parents taught you that if you do not have something good to say then do not say anything. Yes i am being a hypocrite but cannot help myself. Ignorant people like you p#ss me off. If i could be bothered i would go back all your other posts and can imagine they would all be of the same high standard of contribution. In fact I read your 2 other posts on this topic and they contributed absolutely nothing. Then again I guess with 14000 plus posts you dont get out very often and communicate in real life to people, just do it all from behind a screen. Turn off the computer and go outside occasionally and you will see that the world isnt quite like it was when you left it for a computer.
Well said Callaway. There are too many idiots on this forum who add nothing to the debate. The moderators might consider ways of enforcing the rule...

so if someone is antagonized or responds emotionally to a contrary opinion, would it be trolling?
Raybal seems to be describing himself pretty accurately.
And what is the basis of this comment? I welcome feedback but troll replies like yours are lazy and incomplete

Well in regard to the original comment by Soutpeel that we were commenting on, I reckon that is definitely a troll. Your question about responding emotionally will depend on what is actually written.
All of the forum rules are here so I'll let you have a read and you can form your own view.

I can understand maintaining peace. Their action to this one old woman is just to extreme. How much suppression can they get?
Not sure of any one saw the video. It was one taken of a lady being taken away. One of the people taking her away had a tag hanging around his neck saying in English PRESS.
They did not shoot the part where she brought all that attention on to her. For all we know she might have shot some body. It was obvious that the video was meant to imply she was being mistreated with out giving a reason for her being taken away.
You are going to have to show me more than that. For all we know the guy with a PRESS sign in English was just a fake. A red shirt doing what he could to discredit the best government Thailand has available. Why was it in English at a Thai rally?
A lot of gullible people here. Just willing to believe the worst with no evidence. What did she do wrong show me that video.
Why do people go down a side track? The issue this thread is discussing as per the heading is
Replying to Thai Police: No plain clothes officers carry media arm band to access protest sites
So why do people feel it necessary to ignore that question and start talking about other questions such as if the arrest was legal or not or if the woman shot someone or whatever. If people want to rage about non-central issues, then they should start a new thread.
This video was flagged because it exposed the RTP making an incorrect statement about undercover cops using PRESS identification as a cover and it is not implying anything else. It is a fact that a person with a PRESS tag was acting as a police officer. End of story.
Gullible people? How about people who cannot focus on the core issue.

Computers and iPhones etc are the future and the young generation need to be taught how to get every advantage from this technology and not just using for games or social networking .
If they are taught right from a young age then they have a chance of taking full advantage of the devices they are using!
I agree with what you have stated however I thought the biggest problem was that the tablets supplied are not up to the task. I read they were poorly built and often fail after a short period.

The visiting friends category 'O' visa was consigned to history over 2 years ago. You won't get one.
Thanks Briggsy for a helpful and informative comment. It's a pity there are so many judgemental people on TV who seem to delight in hammering members with less knowledge than themselves rather than actually assist and inform. .
-
Raybal5, can I politely suggest that your attitude will get you nowhere FAST in Thailand.
This is neither Kansas nor Sydney - Dorothy....
Thanks Simon. Your comment is noted and accepted in the spirit in which I hope you have given it. However I thought I asking fellow farangs questions and trying to get to the truth of what the situation might be was an acceptable use of this forum. My observations about the efficiency or otherwise of their consulate in Melbourne are just observations and yes I am venting on this forum. Are you implying that TV members should not be making such comments amongst ourselves or are you suggesting that immigration officials read pots here?

Has anyone managed to get a non-immigrant O visa to visit friends?
Having looked at the Thai Embassy site for Canada, their advice says this for a category 'O' visa:
- other activities (Category "O") as follows:
to stay with the family, to perform duties for the state enterprise or social welfare organizations, to stay after retirement for the elderly, to receive medical treatment, to be a sport coach as required by Thai Government, to be a contestant or witness for the judicial process.
This says nothing about visiting friends, which logically would simply come under a tourist visa.
Thanks for that. I didn't think it was necessary or even advisable for Australian passport holders to check the Canadian website. As you know, there are different rules based on different countries eligibility.
In the OP I did state I went to the Melbourne Consulate so this is the site I checked before lodging my application and this is what it states.
Non-Immigrant 'O' Visa Information General Purpose
Non-Immigrant visa category 'O' is for the applicants wishing to enter the Kingdom of Thailand on a long term holiday, visiting family or friend, or volunteer purposes. An applicant can only apply at maximum 2 entries.
- other activities (Category "O") as follows:

Well that makes it even worse that their own websites have been wrong for 2 years. I thought 9 months was bad.

It has been much longer than September of 2013 that the rules were tightened up. I am not sure they are available anywhere now.
If that's the case then I wonder why they have not updated their web page. Probably just to tease us and perpetuate mis-information.
Send them an email suggesting that they should update that web page. Give them a link to the page for easy reference.
I actually had their own webpage printed out and I handed it to the senior person at the Melbourne consulate. All he wanted to do was show attitude and give it back to me. I guess he had 'lost face' over this. Must have been his job to maintain the website.

Yes I'm sure no one else anywhere has outdated information on their websites and that the embassy decided not to update the information only because they hoped to sow confusion. Another conspiracy theory is born.
As is the case with most changes to rules and regulations regarding visas, the changes are the consequence of people who misuse existing rules or attempt to exploit loopholes. Most people don't "visit" friends twelve or more months at a time.
I guess Platinum Membership means you cannot tolerate a sense of humour when you see it. Conspiracy theory? What are you on today?
I agree that most people would not ""visit" friends twelve or more months at a time" however I had panned to live with my boyfriend in his home for an extended visit. I cannot get a long stay non-immigrant O on the grounds of marriage because we are both males. You can't get much more friendly than a boyfriend but apparently the consulate feels they can glance at an application and in 3 seconds decline it without giving an actual reason other than I can't have it. Their attitude would get anyone off-side.
Your snide comment about out of date websites is a poor excuse for organisations such as Consulates that are supposed to advise and adjudicate the current rules and regulations. 9 days out of date is excusable. 9 months is an irresponsible perpetuation of incorrect information and will do nothing except cause confusion and ill feeling. But hey, if you want to be an apologist for slackness then go right ahead!

By air there is no limit in force at the moment.
By land they are limiting them to 3 back to back. They are not accumulative over any period of time.
By air: The authorities have put us on notice that the new rules will also apply to entry by air from 12th August 2014. Same limits as by land.

Sadly, Australian Passports cannot have pages added.

I suspect that sales of 'Thailand Elite Cards' may also suffer, if they can possibly fall any lower ?

Has anyone managed to get a non-immigrant O visa to visit friends? If you have I'd love to know which consulate you got it from and on what basis it was granted.
Last week I applied for a 12 month and 3 entry non-immigrant 'o' visa to visit my boyfriend. The consulate staff in Melbourne took one glance at my application and told me I could not have one and changed my application to a 6 month tourist visa. This was not what I had read on their website.
When I went in to collect my passport and visa a few days later, I showed them a printout of their website and asked them to explain why I could not have a non-imm O to visit friends. I was told by the lady at the window that the rules were changed in September (2013) and it was no longer available. So I asked why it was still on their web-site. I was then told by another officer who came up to the window that it was assessed on a case by case basis (as all applications always are) but he declined to advise me under which situations a visiting freinds application might be granted.
I left feeling confused and a little pissed off that the staff were so vague and unhelpful and the aggression of the guy.

About 15 years ago there was a scam in which a landowner claimed to have found WWII US savings bonds now worth billions buried on his land, presumably by the Japanese. He was trying to boost the value of the land & sell it for big baht. I wonder if something similar isn't happening here.
Except in this case there are pictures of the guy with the gold.

"Under the law, ancient artifacts belong to the state. However, he said, his department is willing to purchase these gold sheets."
Is that really sending the right message?
The farmers deserve some payment for discovering it and digging it up.

Seems like a lot of TV posters are really happy with things now that the general has taken control. For all your talk of how the Shinawatra family and those around them have raped the country, none of you are really in the know about anything that goes on. Most of the allegations made by you people are nothing more than the rumor mill that goes around and around and around. While I am not at all of the belief that things have not happened which were dishonest, deceitful, and corrupt, how is it you seem to believe that the PDRC, Democrats, or Army generals are any better? How many poor generals do you know? Where did Suthep get his money? You are so happy that the general is going after people supporting the PTP, you are oblivious to the fact that the general has rounded up a large group of people without warrant and without lawful justification, had detained them in a manner which in any other country would be unlawful. Probably okay with you if he shoots them too. I would not be so happy at the course of events just because you dislike the Shinawatras, PTP, Reds or whomever. You all forget how the Democrats came to power under dubious means, how the government of Ahbisit caused the death of over a hundred people. There is almost glee among the anti-Thaksin bunch here and it's all okay because the general is against the side you vehemently hate so much. Doesn't matter that the man dissolved the senate, put aside the constitution and with military power just took over everything. That is interesting thinking to me. So much for the rule of law as long as it is for the "right" side.
Gee I guess you are right Mr Trouble. I wouldn't know anything compared to an intellectual giant like you. I mean, how could anyone in their right mind think that a General who has stopped the reds and yellows killing each other to be trusted. And as for a General that in 3 weeks forced the payment of millions of bahts to poor rice farmers who had been waiting for 9 months that Yingluck Shinawatra had delayed payment to and was likely to continue to do so; I am certain this general cannot be trusted to subjugate the poor and favour the rich and powerful as the world according to you has to be. Not to mention that this subversive General has in a matter of weeks, located and confiscated many weapons and explosives that have no place in any political actions. Are these some of the reasons that you view him as a dangerous person?
Doesn't matter that the man dissolved the senate, put aside the constitution and with military power just took over everything you. Well sir, when the people in power ignore the constitution and try to illegally change that constitution then maybe that's a damn fine time to put things aside and remove the corrupt politicians who were trying to invalidate the ruling of the court and allow their criminal relative back into the country with a full pardon. Which is worse? Allow more corruption and let people change the constitution illegally or suspend the government by applying martial law with the intent of cleaning out the rotten apples before going back to a democracy? And as for you implying that Martial Law is illegal, were you aware that Martial law in Thailand derives statutory authority from the Act promulgated by King Vajiravudh following the abortive Palace Revolt of 1912, entitled Martial Law, B.E. 2457 (1914).
As for you carping on about how the Democrats came to power. What charges were laid and upheld in court against Abhisit? The then Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said soldiers acted in self-defense and it was proven that the protesters were actually attacking the soldiers and not as you imply, the other way around. And even if Abhisit did, despite all evidence to the contrary, order the killings, how is that relevant to what the Shinawatra family and friends have been doing to screw the county whilst in government? Perhaps in your mind, quelling riots and preventing civil war are bad but corruption and theft is quite fine and dandy as long as it is done quietly by those who swore to uphold the laws of the kingdom and act in the best interests of the kingdom. And no, you cannot be excused for buying into Thaksin's delusion that he was the king so the realm belonged to him. .
I am in no way oblivious to the fact that the general has rounded up a large group of people. He did round them up and in some cases detained them. You might however be surprised to learn that the General only detained people who were threatening the internal security of the country because guess what; that's his job. Yes I agree that no warrants were issued but martial law is different to civil law and the actions were very much warranted and supported by millions of Thai nationals.
If the Shinawatra clan truly want to be admired, then why don't they accept the rule of law that you hold dear and now complain the General has ignored? Thaksin was found guilty by the highest court in the kingdom and rather than accept that rule of law and face the music, he ran away overseas and schemed to continue to govern and plunder through his puppet sister and his other rich and powerful mates.
So sorry to trouble you with the facts Mr Trouble. The Trouble is I don't think you can accept that in some situations and for the good of the nation, the rule of constitutional law has to be temporarily set aside due to those in charge not abiding by that law and also that in Thailand, martial law is 100% legal.

Disappointing to see so many TV members support the removal of the constitution, human rights, freedom of speech, press and protest, in the face of world wide condemnation.
Extreme conditions require an extreme response. Are you seriously saying that just on principle, you would like to see the continued raping of the country by the Shinawatra family and friends and the continued corruption of police and others? Also the continued chaos, injuries and deaths caused by the warring political factions? And do you really believe that human rights and the constitution were being upheld by Yingluck and her cronies?
And do you think a series of rhetorical questions further the debate?
Do you not think you could save resources just by posting 'No. I am right and you are wrong. End of discussion'?
And exactly what did YOU add to the debate Mr baboon? Or is it your role to pooh pooh questions that you don't agree with and try to stifle debate?
I don't have to justify myself to shallow thinkers like you but I was quite serious in asking Mr Yim about his seemingly blind support of the usual things mouthed by supporters of the democracy. I wanted to explore why he felt it ok to overlook the corruption of the Shinawatra family and friends. These are not rhetorical questions as they go the the very heart of the current (and past) troubles confronting Thailand.
So I will throw it back to you baboon - either add to the discussion or shut the hell up.

It seems that you old guys have lost the capacity to mount a logical argument and resort to making personal attacks without backing up your comments with any form of reason, facts, or logic. A classic case of this is above in the quote where I asked Berkshire to advise me the basis of his personal attack. So far he has not bothered to clarify for me why he feels I am wrong or out of step. Nor in fact have you. You have resorted to accusing me of being vile for making a comment about Soutpeel who made a vile personal attack on the OP. At least Callaway and I have been man enough to justify our comments with a reasoned argument. You old guys seem incapable of anything more than slanging shit at people which is a typical response of people who know they are wrong and have no reasonable basis for what they said. If dumping shit on people is what it takes to gain respect in this forum then that is a sad state of affairs.
