yes mate I love this city, it keeps a smile on my dial. but also appreciate the boonies. which, by the way, are best explored with either a car or a bike. I've done a few such excursions and they're almost as good as cruising around Bangkok till roads late at night.

I liked Chiang Rai, Ubol Rat and Nong Khai on previous visits. Chiang Rai is near the Kok river which always makes me chuckle.

in the past I was probably guilty of that. I couldn't handle the heat so I got out of the kitchen. will do again if "Thailand changes*". but I decided to retire here at age 52 knowing exactly what I was getting myself in for. been coming here since mid-1997 and so had some experience but by no means a Mr Thailand like some on here. strangely enough this forum helped me come to my decision. I read probably thousands of posts, most of which were complaints about the same old nonsense; immigration's "onerous" requirements, how selfish Thai drivers are, you're not welcome blah blah blah. but in amongst all that sh!te were a few voices of reasons and I chose to listen to them instead of all the Thai-bashers. been here seven months now and loving every minute of it. been (mostly) going with the flow instead of kicking against the pricks and having a much better time than on previous trips. when problems arise I try to do the jai yen yen thing and work to find a solution instead of getting angry and losing my cool then coming on here ranting about how bad it all is. haven't been totally successful but that's the way she goes. *have you noticed that most complainers blame Thailand for doing the wrong thing instead of accepting personal responsibility? it's hardly ever that you see someone ask "this happened to me today, what did I do wrong" or "how can I understand Thai culture a little better so that I can fit in and make things work for me". I reckon if more posters did that then there'd be less bickering here and more sharing of practical information. there are some very knowledgeable chaps on here but their voices get drowned out by the static. but to coin an acronym, TIAN. that's not going to change anytime soon.
