  1. She is not into old fat guys - for some strange reason - but a charming English gent might have a chance. ;)

    Counts twofortheroad out then ;)

You haven't met me, obviously. I can charm the birds out of the trees.

They make a nice pie too.

Back on topic, I still think we need a 'How Miserable are you" Poll.

  2. Love just about everything about Chiang Mai. The only thing missing now is someone to share it with!

Send me your spec, maybe we could meet up. You are a girl, right?

Did you vote? I didn't see any votes on 'under 20'?

  3. Did any of the other pubs/bars that are for sale think about  opening a Topic here? 3,653 views has got to be good for business. Worth thinking about even if you're not for sale. In difficult times you've got to be creative. Who remembers the constant carpet business closing down sales that used to appear in BKK Post? Some of them must have closed down at least three times a year. :whistling:

PS. Don't forget the old dodge of getting someone else to post it.

  4. If anyone could confirm, but I was told yesterday that Maurice, from True Blue died a few years ago.

Does anyone know if this is true? The people who told me did know him and were adamant, but he's not mentioned here and no one else has ever mentioned it

I got an email from him last Wednesday. He didn't say anything about being dead. But then again, Maurice is that sort of a guy.

  5. You're showing a lot of class not naming the place.. Still, I would like to know which bar it was. PM is okay too.

Water drinkers of the world unite. ;)

I'd love to know which bar this is too?

I'm surprised, what with it being so packed with standing room only, that the drinks on the floor never got knocked over!

Which one of you will tell us all? I'd like to know, but only because I'm nosey.

  6. ... snip ... the miserable bit I'm working on. It's a bit more difficult living here in Chiang Mai, but hopefully I'll get there.

    มึง (Meung) TwoForTheRoad,

We think you're already at the pinnacle of miserableness.

    ~o:37;

You didn't meet the guy in our street. I've got a fair way to go yet. I also liked the old boy in Father Ted. Someone to aspire to.

    Father Ted

  7. I would be a miserable old creature back in Farangland, but I am just old here. :)

I can't see where to add my degree of misery. Did you forget to include it? The polls a bit meaningless without it.

When I was a young lad there was a miserable old git that lived in our street. Everyone was terrified to retrieve a football if it went into his garden. His war chant was "If that ball comes into my garden again, I'll put a <deleted>#%king knife in it!!".

I loved him!! I remember thinking, 'when I get old, I want to be like him". I didn't want to be a lovely, nice old man, I wanted to miserable and cranky. Well, I'm not quite as old he he was, but the miserable bit I'm working on. It's a bit more difficult living here in Chiang Mai, but hopefully I'll get there. Reading Thai Visa gives me quite a few good tips.

  8. Not the brightest guy in the box are you?

The free water thread and the subsequent vote on f and c restaurants was manipulated by a known clique. If you don't know that then that's your problem. One poster was ultimately kicked out by the mods.

I agree it was a humourous thread but its purpose was subliminal advertising, a fact the op picked up on. I have no problem with advertising so long as it is fair. The free water thread and this one - which is also getting humourous in a pedestrian sort of way - is that it is biased to one establishment and knocking pthers. As I said there is room for more than one chippie and for fair competition.

I don't think Pratties is for sale - that's news to me. What is your source for that? Piggy's was for sale as I understand it. You're getting more than a little confused, aren't you?

I have not mentioned Piggy's a lot. Look at the posts. I have said Charlies is good but for a certain type of clientele. Piggys and Pratties are different and cater for different people. I have never had bad meals at any of the three, but would not personally put Charlies as the best. Also I have never been short-changed or had errors on the bill with Piggys or Pratties.

Not the brightest guy in the box? What does that mean? Did you make it up yourself? What would guys be doing in boxes?

How or why was the Free Water post manipulated? It wasn't a poll. What would be the point?

If the F&C poll was manipulated, who cares? I don't. It's irrelevant. Did it bother the other places (and there were many) that were in the poll, or just you?

Subliminal advertising? Was he flashing messages into his posts or playing ads below human hearing? How would you have detected it? Do you have special hearing or visual powers that we humans don't?

Subliminal stimuli (pronounced /sʌbˈlɪmɨnəl/, literally "below threshold"), contrary to supraliminal stimuli or "above threshold", are any sensory stimuli below an individual's absolute threshold for conscious perception. Visual stimuli may be quickly flashed before an individual may process them, or flashed and then masked, thereby interrupting the processing. Audio stimuli may be played below audible volumes, similarly masked by other stimuli, or recorded backwards in a process called backmasking. Introduced in 1897, the concept became controversial as "subliminal messages" in 1957 when marketing practitioners claimed its potential use in persuasion. Subsequent scientific research, however, has been unable to replicate most of these marketing claims beyond a mere placebo effect.

I didn't say that Praties was for sale, I said "Is Praties the other Fish & Chip shop that is advertised on TV as 'For Sale'?". That answers two of your questions in one. I was told about it, but I never checked the ad because I couldn't find it. I have now - It appears that it is Chilli Bell that is for sale but if Piggy's was for sale as you said then my argument still holds true - he's hardly giving him a run for his money, is he? Why would he be trying to sell up if he was doing so well? The only F&C I've had in Chiang Mai were at Piggy's and they were fine. Not great but good enough. I'm not that interested enough to care about whose are the best.

By the way, which certain types of people does Charlies cater for and which different people do Piggys and Pratties cater for? I wouldn't like to go to the wrong one if I do fancy some F&C one night.

Have you been short-changed and had errors on your bill at Charlie's? Your last sentence implies that. If you are accusing someone of misdeeds (I did say 'if'), it would be bolder to be forthright than merely implying it. Besides, it might put me off going there.

Finally, just a little tip. If you think a post is inappropriate for any reason (free advertising, off topic), press the little 'Report' button and let the Moderators decide. That's how it works around here.

  9. they found it! I called my number and it was the police that answered.I wonder how the other guy is getting on.

Congratulations.I'm not in the least bit surprised. As I said before in my deleted comments, Thais will often go to great lengths to return what isn't rightlfully theirs. The staff in a pub that I go to will chase down the road to return bags, wallets, cameras etc that have been left behind. If they can't find them, they are kept safe until they return.
  10. What a miserable attitude :realangry:.

It seems as if a refund was given to those who simply turned round and left when they saw the line so if you felt strongly enough to use the word "swindle" you should have taken the same initiative yesterday. Whatever the issues of the day, lots of people worked hard to stage the event and to imply wrongdoing is out of order wherever you fought and whatever "job you got done".

Well said. It appears that refunds were given out quite readily. Talking of swindles is absolute rubbish.

  11. If someone drank Sodas for 30 Baht a pop at the same rate others down small beers, wouldn't the profit margin be about the same?

I guess the problem is that Soda drinkers probably couldn't keep up with the alcy's.

The OP was about a couple sharing one bottle of water. Profit margins don't come into that equation.

What is the relevance of how much alcoholics drink? The average customer in a pub is not an alcoholic.

  12. Whilst it's nice to receive the positive comments, and I'm sure their were plenty , If I were involved in organising such a big event I'd be more interested in the negative ones. They're the ones that offer an opportunity to improve.

Well I will start here. If you were not there you should...

    ..... have been?

  13. Give your full attention to the people who are supporting you, perhaps a little less to  the water drinkers, after all if you need a baht or two that badly, there is a profit on water is there not?

Many pubs maker more profit on a bottle of water than a bottle of beer.

Some people think that the water should be free.  :whistling:

  14. wow its seems most you people just like to complain no matter what.. dam there were 2000+ people there, did u think the food line wasnt going to long? did you think an event this big there wasnt going to be some glitches? did u think it wasnt going to be hot in july? so u paid 40 baht plus for american soda/beer wow seems cheap since it was flown in from the states. i think the staff at The Dukes did a great job and the food was excellent. the guys at the VFW & The Dukes staff put in a lot of work for this event to happen and people want to complain and say negative stuff.. lets see u pull an event off like this.. there could have been 50 food stations, cheap beer, western toilets, and most of u would still complain.. get a life & be grateful that the VFW/The Dukes did an event like this.

Whilst it's nice to receive the positive comments, and I'm sure their were plenty , If I were involved in organising such a big event I'd be more interested in the negative ones. They're the ones that offer an opportunity to improve.

  15. If I had 16 various beverages, I would probably think that everything was Fantastic too. Well done.

Insinuating that my enjoyment of today's festivities is solely the result of alcohol consumption is "a bit myopic I think".

    -Mestizo

    Insinuate! Me?

Come on be fair, it does appear that your view of today's events are in stark contrast to all of the other views, most of them from quite moderate members and one of them from a Welshman!

I'm not saying it was solely the result of alcohol consumption but .... let's just say it may have helped.

Besides, I don't think my statement was myopic - a little bit presumptious maybe?

  16. Ugh.  Here goes the anti-sanook, whine about everything ThaiVisa brigade again.   Whine about everything from Songkran, heat, rain, to christmas dinner at Dukes, Tuskers, *insert other venue here*.    There is just absolutely no pleasing some of you.

    Beverages:

Fantastic!   Greatly enjoyed the Dr. Pepper, Mt Dew, Bud Light, Coors Light and Sam Adams they imported in.  I had approximately 16 various beverages thru out the day (from about 2:30 PM until post fireworks).   Not one single time did I stand in a queue for more than 3 minutes.  15 minutes to buy a beer?  I highly recommend you take your wrist watch in for a much needed adjustment.

If I had 16 various beverages, I would probably think that everything was Fantastic too. Well done.

  17. The OP asked how other pub/bar owners would handle this and while I've never owned that type of establishment we had a similar problem when we'd bring celebrity garden writers/broadcasters to our greenhouse/nursery for "free" talks, but the seating was limited.  We ended up selling "tickets" that were redeemable for merchandise at the business that day instead of just letting people take the seats on a first-come basis.  We started this practice after observing some of the early arrivals getting in their cars and driving off without shopping right after the talk and celebrity book signing (of books they'd bought elsewhere)

I think the bar/tavern version of this practice is known in the U.S. as something like a "three drink minimum".

A great idea, but it sounds too much like 'Free drink minimum' for my liking.

  18. Although Mestizo seems to have had a good day, the 'Nays' still have it so far. I wasn't there but I did hear about the very long queues for food, which sounded like a reasonable complaint from a reasonable guy. He did get a refund but he was still disappointed at the apparent bad organisation. To dissmiss it as 'no winning with the TV crowd' is a bit myopic I think. Since these people paid then I think they should be entitled to air their grievances and if the event was as succesful as you imply, the 'Yes' votes should be coming soon.

To digress, if it's allowed, I found Beinaj's "Somewhat Off Topic"comments in the Closed posting truly amazing. Apparently, 2 questions about 4th July in a topic titled "Independence Day 4th of July", were off topic. That's a classic. Nothing personal, but I hope you don't get the job.

  19. Just seen on the website that you can now buy shares in Chiang Mai F.C. 100baht a share and if you buy 5 for 500 baht you get a V.I.P car park pass for the home games.

I'm up for that one. Where do you buy them?

I'm impressed by your Thai reading skills , so maybe you can answer my next question ...  how many shares do I need to get an introduction to the Tigerettes?

  20. A good away win for the Tigers at Tak (3-2), keeps them top of the table.

Even better result with the fact that Chianat only drew 0-0 and Pichit lost 2-1 yesterday. Puts them 4 points clear now.

The first line of my post just said "Bangkok Girl, Massage. We know what you want".

I'm not sure if I want that on my posts. This is a Family forum, isn't it?

Maybe it was mis-placed and should have been on yours?
