  1. Probably no maintenance in all the years they have been in operation. Some of those older train carriages could use a little TLC.

actually its all german train technology !

its technically impossible to have any kind of accidents or things like doors open outside a station.

the conductor must force it to do so .. (in germany the driver need to have a written "order" to do things like this, have to press alot of buttons and stand the horrible alert buzzer anyway) if he like to keep his job and not want to go to jail).

same as the accident in the MRT some time ago, the thais make it happen even if idiot proof technology make it impossible.

this is why i do not use the Airport link. a 150km/h fast train on a bridge on overhead power support (first of its kind in thailand) ....

just too many things can be <deleted> up by thai engineers and a ccident on a bridge with that speed would be fatal.

  2. but say that iWorks is no match for MS office, and MS office on Mac is about 80% of that on windows

that is right, MS Office is the only Product Microsoft Bought in which actually really works.

and its also the only product providing a substantial excuse to Microsoft Windows ;)

there is simply nothing better ... you may get some trolls telling you about openoffice and other things .. but that is just not true.

however, iam not that much office loaded ... so i can not tell you on what to do .. so pages does the job for me ...

but honestly, if i had to use office on a daybyday basis i may would have a WinXP Machine with just Office on it somewhere in a closet to remote desctop there :P

  3. agree with negreanu,

timemachine is slow, because it does generate a catalog of _ALL_ files on your harddisc .. analayse each file about its state and change

and then write it to the external disc.

so yes it can take a very long time at first, or if the backup has not been runn for a while.

but what really concerns me are the "Drivers" you meantioned in the post ...

what exactly did you install ?

Mac-rule number 2: never install any drivers ;) it either works out of the box or you heading into trouble ;)

  4. i bought my one in True Shop ... if the apple outlets does not have any, better get it at a big place,

my experience is the same ... most of this sellers moving boxes in the cheapest possible way

quality and service (what makes Macintosh Products great) are not really somethings anyone does care arround here.

  5. i will facing very soon the "problem" with too little time

since the mother only gets 3 Months Mother-holiday and i have also pretty much a 14 hour job.

i have seen alot of nanny/maids so far in thailand .. but about 99,9% of them i would never let near my child.

so this question is, how to select one ?

and how much to pay for ?

does anyone has some experiences in getting things like this done ?

    cheers Mario

  6. hello there ,, i just pop in into this topic out of personal interest and experiences

general experience about strollers and baby seats are far below terrible arround here.

most of the cheaper ones are even dangerous for the baby in normal use .. like sharp corners and other things.

i found one shop sell good stuff in Ladphrao ..

i asked for a Britax Agile Series (as they are really easy to handle and have all the feature needed but not too fancy)

they came up with 49000 baht for a Stroller and Car Seat ?

    <deleted> ??

the excuse they came up with was the transportation (from hongkong to thailand ???)

she said no its from germany ... well look at the badge .. it show dispatched in Hongkong ..

i told the seller .. i can fly to Frankfurt .. buy it there and fly back and it still would be cheaper than 49k ...

but well .. didnt impress them at all.

anyone know where can buy something decent ? preferred from Britax ?

  7. there will be updates soon

they beeing updated about 2 - 3 times per Year. that is not really the point for a Purchase decition.

since the current will probably hit the non-updatabe marker in somethings like 5 years .. so the Updated one will it this in 5 years and 3 months ;)

  8. if the "updating cycle" is your only worry you can simply buy anything avaiable.

since there is no such thing ;) mac's just work,

the only reason for a cycle is your expectations growing ;)

okay thats not entirely true, new Operatinsystems do not support hardware 3-4 Generations behind (but this is mostly the case if the new architecture is very much different)

main hangup may be the Price, in case you get a used one .. they will be much cheaper after all the show-off kiddies bought a retina one and the market is flooded with non-retina ones.

i myself are also always 1 or 2 generation behind since this saves me a fortune on $ an i never hit any limitation because of that.

(well iam programmer, not video Artist) ..

if you want to buy a new one .. just get a retina one.

  9. hey there, not sure this is the right place to ask.

since i moved close to the Airport, we do have a serious Snake Problem.

basically twice a week one of the long friends stopping by the house somewhere.

Mostly smaller ones +/- 50cm Long .... today i walked out and stepped almost on one 1 Meter long.

are there some grandma Reciepts on how to have them stay away ? some smell or some other way ?

i have no clue what animals they are (i mean what type) if they dangerous or not. i'd rather not take any chances.

there is a wall arround the house arround 1 meter high. in front its only about 30 cm .. and the gate is open on the bottom (very thai style even)

does closing this gaps really help or do they just go anywhere they like to ?

hope to get some sort of intel.

there seems some big variety of types around as well ... the one i saw today had a brown skin but some shiny red patches (just saw it by the tail)

others are mostly very dark ones with some structure (green) on the back ... well hard to tell i guess

  10. On the other hand, tearing down a bigger part of the original ceiling could offer me the chance to insert another wire, to get the wall-remote working (i really hate this chains hanging down from the fan inviting peoples to destroy them ...

    Still thinking about that.

On a sidenote, does anyone know someone can fix the ceiling properly ?

I mean i can fix it myself, but it wont look nice then :)

  11. Hey!! I told you exactly how you need to do ir and even took the time to draw you a diagram ( see copy below)

Oh, forgive me, at this time i probably removed the notification on the general forum already.

I will do somthings you did propose, i just getting the metal pipe made longer to cover the 60cm to the ceiling.

I just have to figure out a way mounting all this trough a 10x10cm hole ..

  12. Actually the "wood idea" is pretty good and simple as well.

I think i will just try that for a start since its simple to accomplish.

The hole is still very small, i wont get the head inside, but you can see the structure materials on one of the photos,

I just have to figute how far is the next one, thats simple to do.

Just afraid then about the noise.

In the secound floor is the same ceiling, opening harsch the bedroom door makes a scary noise from the pressured air builds up. (The ownside of having quality windows haha)

Ill give the wood idea a try and test the noise.

The fan company website looks really interesting as well. Maybe they have some universal extentions or somethings.

  13. I asked the same question in the general forum, but got the usual non-productive responses.

I was told its better to give it a try here.

    So here iam :)

I bought a ceiling fan. But my misstake was to to check the ceiling before doing this,

It turns out that there is about 60cm distance between the gipsum ceiling and the concrete plate.

Mounting on the ceiling is not an option, since i dont have installed the ceiling myself and iam not willing to get any suprises left by some thai-engineers :)

Also i dont want the vibration generate noise.

So the idea is to mount somethings on the concrete plate, reaching to the ceiling to mountthe fan there.

The gipsum is "one piece style" and i do not own the house, so i want to destoy as little as possible of the original ceiling.

Does anyone have an idea on how to do this or (even better) can do it for me, or know someone can do it ?

    (In southeast bkk)

    Cheers mario

  14. Actually I'm a sparkie by trade ... so have fitted more then the odd ceiling fan ...

    Finally something usefull ;)

I have bought one already, and i dont want a wall or standing fan for multiple reasons.

The cealing itself seems to be mounted properly, but i do not want to mount it there for also serval reasons.

    Such as:

    - i did not install the ceiling myself, and its hard to look under it, and i dont like suprises left by thai-engineers ;)

    - the fan mounted straight to the ceiling will generate vibrations and i do not want to hear the device in the while house.

    And so on.

So the idea is to simply mount something solid to the real ceiling (concrete plate) which reaches almost the ceiling and mount it there.

By this way the hole will be covered without me doing anew paint-job and i have the required security and no noise.

The problem is (and this is the only thing i did not check before) the ceiling has 60cm distance.

Andthat is alot. Its also "finished" apears as one piece.

    Some pics attached.

  15. Many Thais actually hate and are scared of the ceiling fans ...

Well i'm not Thai, so lucky i think before i mount something too heavy somewhere i know the structure does not support it.

Thats the reason for this thread, wanted to shortcut, asking maybe someone know someone/someway to actually do that :)

I'm aware there is somestructure required, the big question is, who can do that without destroying the whole house. :)

  16. For the new house i decided to get a ceiling fan,

    Tought, done.

But today i realized the ceiling is covered with gipsum (holds about 60 of air till the concrete shows)

Can anyone recoment something or someone to getthat installed properly.

I dont want the thing to crash down and also dont want it shakes the whole ceiling all day.

    Any ideas ?

  17. well "for now" i simply want them to stay out of the house ;)

i'm not so much concerned about sitting outside.

this mosquite ptraps have also the downside that tehy very effective DO attract the insects, so its abit of a devil's circle ..

thats why my attention did go straight to this lamps as i did see them, but judging from the posts it was like expected, just a marketing way to sell overpriced non-efficient lighting ;)

professional zappers seem not really existing in THailand too, i see only the cheap junk, which does not exactly work as advertised either.

if a zapper, then a real one. but it turned out to be not as easy as planned to get some of them.

but honestly, i think the UV attraction of this machines is greater as the killing effect they provide.
