  1. I believe it's called VA disability compensation for which you can qualify in case you get injured while on active duty.

Technically it's not a pension but in a way it works the same in that it gives you a monthly amount which can be substantial.

I've received a small VA Disability since I was 21, that's over 40 years. I read some time ago on Thai Visa that its possible somehow to get free medical care in Thailand under the VA system if your disability is high enough.

  2. Yea, 15,500 divide by 500 works out to a 31.0 to the USD exchange rate. Bangkok Bank TT Buying rate is 30.93 right now....just got 30.85 for a credit card charge at Sizzler.

But, you know you didn't really get 31 when the fees are considered. Since it seems your debit card has a 1% foreign transaction fee that will probably show as a separate charge to your account as will the 150 baht Thai bank fee. So, when taking in consideration the 1% foreign transaction fee on the of 15,500 baht that comes out to 150 baht (approx $5), and you also have the separate 150 Thai bank ATM fee (approx $5)...crank in that 300 baht (approx $10) total of additional fees to hit your account along with the 15,500 baht/$500, you effectively got around a 30.4 exchange rate. That is, 15,500 baht hits your account for a $500 charge along with 300 baht worth of fees for $10...grand total $510 charge hitting your account....15,500 baht divided by $510 equals a 30.4 exchange rate. But even that rate sure beats the rate from a few months ago. Using an AEON ATM a person can avoid the 150 baht Thai bank ATM fee. Avoiding the foreign transaction fee of 1% in your case (not uncommon to see a 3% fee for some cards) you just need to find a bank that offers a card with no foreign transaction fee (fewer of these everyday but they are still out there). Yea, still better than a few weeks/months ago....hope the exchange rate continues to climb. Cheers.

Capital One didn't have an exchange rate last time I used it.

Out of interest, does one find orangemen in the US?

    Syracuse University Orangemen

  4. I cannot imagine ever having a craving for Taco Bell. When at our home I pass by a Taco Bell daily, We stopped there once in the past thirty years and did try to eat our purchases, but alas bad food does not go down well

I'll be purchasing next week in preparation for our belated move my very own electric tortilla maker to bring in June. My adorable Thai wife makes the best fajitas going right down to the proper pico de gallo , Her caldo de pollo es magnifico her ranchero de pollo es bueno. My latino cooking is Colombian in flavor arepas empanadas pan de yuca arroz con pollo. So if we don't eat good at home my friends have latino restaurants all over the city

I'd bring them good (not pricey)chocolate maybe Russell Stover caramels, not cream filled foo foo crap, good cheese an extra sharp cheddar crumbly with the occasional gritty crunch when you bite into it, if their southern bring them some grits, some nutella, almonds or pecans or walnuts. stuff you take for granted in the US can be nice to get there.

  5. It's got NOTHING to do with sex. Even little children use the finger signs. I've got dozens of pictures to prove that but moderators asked me not to post pictures of children.

Since I was a little child I've used a one finger salute hand sign many times over the years, especially in traffic situations where its use was warranted.

  6. Ohhh is that what it is??? Thanks for your wisdomblink.gif

PS. Internal and International are 2 different things, I am pretty sure even Homer knew that.

Let me try again......"Right,...State Dept. cables should be focused on internal matters?????...duh!"

yES yES, you right master. State department should be focused on dirt about everyone else and all the wrong doings of everyone else. It SHOULD NOT even mention 1 word of USA involvement in any of the dirt -INTERNATIONALLY NOT INTERNALLY.

I was about to reply to your missives, when I took a look at your profile. I notice your age was 10 and I wouldn't dream of demeaning a child posting. It's good that someone your age has an interest in events that occur beyond the playground.

  7. Do you honestly think the government wants consumption to decrease in alcohol sales?

Same with tobacco. They're electronic cigarettes that are beginning to affect slightly tobacco sales, so what does the our gov't do? Begin discussions on the safety of these things, why because of the nicotine found in their chemical make up. Look if you use tobacco you get nicotine, but you pay a hefty tax.it's a legal drug.

Electronic cigs pay no tobacco tax, big loss of income for gov't, so they'll have to be regulated and taxed. Does the gov't care if they're safe for user and harmless to non users. No it's all about the money, not the safety of their constituents. Just how to make gov't bigger and stronger.

While alcohol and tobacco are different products, their alike in one aspect, It's all about the money.

  8. World Arms Dealers

SupplierTotal Sales in US Dollars (billions)Percent of total salesSource: Richard F. Grimmett, CRS Report for Congress; September 10, 2010

Notes: Percentages are rounded; Each country shown as follows:

    • bar-blue.png developing countries
    • bar.png industrialized countries

    United Statesbar-blue.pngbar.png166.27840%Russiabar-blue.pngbar.png73.96518%Francebar-blue.pngbar.png35.1758%United Kingdombar-blue.pngbar.png29.3797%Chinabar-blue.pngbar.png13.6523%Germanybar-blue.pngbar.png19.7425%Italybar-blue.pngbar.png12.5313%Other Europeanbar-blue.pngbar.png43.75210%Othersbar-blue.pngbar.png22.4595%

Yep. That makes a lot of sense. It sums up most of the thread.

    Percentage of total sales

    America 40% Russia 18% France 8% UK 7% China 3% Germany 5% Italy 3% Other European 10% Others 5%

So this Victor falls somewhere in the 5% of others. The USA is the largest dealer of detruction in the world.

THE ARMS trade is a booming business. Each year, more money is spent around the globe on the weapons and military expenditures than anything else--more than social services, agriculture, health care, even the drug trade.

But if you think that the biggest seller of the world's weapons is a "rogue" nation or one of the countries on George Bush's "Axis of Evil," guess again. The biggest arms dealer in the world--for decades running--has been the U.S. government. From 1996 to 2009, the U.S. supplied about 40 percent of the world's weapons each year. By comparison, Russia, the second biggest arms pusher, supplied about 15 percent.

I look as Western Europe as a single entity The same population basically as the US, and about the same amount sold. So while its good for Euros to bang on the US,I think I'd look inward a little bit.

  9. The US through fraudulent mislabeling of junk housing assets sent the world into a tailspin ...... a few years later people want to blame China and their exchange rate ...... Classic typical smokescreen nonsense, to divert blame. ......... Who ever told you the US values it's gold at 43$ an ounce was pulling your leg LOL

Actually I wrote $42 per ounce. The IMF values its gold at $47 per ounce. Perhaps you might wanna check it out before putting typing fingers in gear. Its just an internal accounting thing but true nonetheless.

  10. Or to get China to demand payment for exports in their own currency...:D, else, all those present and future US treasury bonds China holds will be buying peanuts.

Why not demand gold? Of course then Chinese exports to the US would tank :D

I wonder who has been buying up a lot of gold in recent months and pushing up the price. Bet you can see red there! :D

The Obamas financial backer that wonderful citizen of the world's financial market, George Soros is trading in his dollars for gold. We all know how loved he is in Thailand and the UK for his fiscal responsibility while aiding a country in its economic troubles.

20% of the worlds gold reserves are held by gov'ts the US holds about a third of that, and values its gold at the rate of $42 dollars per ounce. At spot price value that'd be close to $300 billion dollars. If counties started demanding payment in gold then the price would drop.

China has been buying gold and mineral assets through the world, without much public outcry. Imagine the screaming if the US had decided to do that.

The US following the lefts economic hero Keynes is tottering toward an even worse economic future with inflation followed by depression in the forecast. Without gov't intervention and unprecedented spending their would've been a downturn and they would've recovered fairly quickly, A better idea would to have reduced the gov't spending and the gov't workforce as Britain will embark on.

  11. I dunno if this is a European vs American thing but in America our cake icing tastes sweet, not like butter, or rather margerine and oil.

    http://en.wikipedia....cing_%28food%29

that is what i like, fwiw.

Is this why one in three yank adults is classed as obese.

Not to worry The Mail online Nov. 7 2010 headlines" Fat Britain: Tackling the obesity epidemic" so the UK is joining the fat folk, the French have proposed a fat tax on sweets.

Look around you in Thailand at how the kids look now and how they looked 20 years ago, big difference in weight. The world is catching the US in a hurry.

  12. Why in the world should I worry about a full body scanner. Just had three kidney stones lithotripsy removed three weeks ago. That's a dozen people in a small room looking at my junk. Two days ago I had a drop dead gorgeous Chinese American resident (female) an assisting nurse and a male teaching surgeon remove the stent, your not asleep for this doesn't really hurt and your internals are on 4 screens to see whats happening. My second surgery of the year the just as many people looking at my naked body with the first one.

It's only the shell you travel in don't get uptight over a few people checking you out, I'm sure they've seen better and are truly bored looking at people pass through the scanner and probably give not a thought to what they've seen only what they're looking for.

  13. Sounds like there is some fraud in the system in the UK. How about 15 million illegal immigrants with a huge portion claiming gov't benefits without having ever worked in the US. Many mothers claiming benefits saying husband left me, while husband works without paying taxes and drive home in his SUV and drives his wife to the store to get gov't approved purchases for children while paying cash for the beer cigs etc

I listen to their comments how little regard they have for the US and it's citizens and saying just how stupid we are as a people while they live off a system that won't even send anyone out to verify anything as there are just too many people to service in office, and no pressure from the top to do it.
