  1. I hope you will not regret soon your step. For me, no valid option, low quality of live in Chiang Mai, I lived there several times for a short time. Traffic jam, air pollution, crowded city center, too many farangs. There are many nicer places in Thailand, e.g. Mae Hong Son or Chiang Rai, for not speaking of nice places in Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia. And continental Europe is simply too beautiful, I would not miss it. Thailand is good enough for a visit in European winter time, but even then neighbouring countries offer more then Chiang Mai.

  2. The best is you apply in the embassy or consulate of your home country, for exemple Italy, if you are Italian. The Schengen visa is valid for the whole EU, includng non-members like Switzerland, Norway, etc. It is not important to apply in the country you want to visit. You should be able to show marriage certificate, translated and authorized. Possibly they ask also for proof of clean penalty register of your Thai spouse, available in BKK only.

  3. Just came back from a 3-month holiday. Originally I wanted to spend 60 days in Thailand, I changed my plans. Went instead to Nepal, Lake Toba in Sumatra, Penang/Malaysia, then 10 days in Thailand, then to Laos, back to Thailand for 6 days, then to Laos again, then just transfer from Ubon to DMG and straight to Swampi airport. And prices everywhere cheaper then in Thailand.

  4. ThaiLoveLinks is not a bad site. Met my lady there, everything o.k. and honest. I met about 25 girls in the whole country and then I took my decision. One has to use common sense, after the first date you know already a lot, if they are interested in you or in money only. I had some really funny meetings, showing the mentality of many Thai girls very fast (falang = walking bank).

  5. You can take Air Asia and go yourself to Nong Khai. It is only 55 km from Udon, about an hour by bus. Cost is 35 Baht. Starts at Ubon bus station. From Nong Khai bus station you take a tuktuk to the border, 50 Baht. Then you go to Thai border, make exit stamp, then take a bus to Lao border office for 20 baht, and there you apply for visa on arrival. If you are Swiss, Japanese or from Luxembourg, you do not need a visa, you get visa-free entry for 15 days. Otherwise apply for the visa on arrival, cost is 31 US$. Pay in US$, otherwise it is more expensive. Your GF just needs a valid ID card to enter Laos PDR, no visa required. Bus from Udon airport to bus station: 80 baht.

  6. It largely depends on the weather. Recently it was 7 degrees in the morning in Chiang Mai. Nothing of tropical climate. No need to change clothes every day. And when you look like a lot of Thais walk around in dirty clothes, mostly younger men, but even some women, then you don't have to be concerned wearing the same clothes 2 days or more. By the way: Vietnamese people look much more tidy then Thais and care much more about it.

  7. but won't all this be relaxed regarding citizens of neighbouring countries when AEC comes into force?

And 40,000 people blacklisted ! WOW that is a phenomenal amount ohmy.png

The AEC is not about letting all citizens of neighbouring countries move around freely or come into Thailand. It's restricted to a select few occupations, nothing to do with the labouring classes.

True - I highly doubt that the AEC will ever come close to the free movement of labour model seen in Europe. On day one, the disparities in national wealth and population demographics would be just too great. Just compare Laos and Singapore. So you're quite right ... a lot of people here tend to overplay the importance of the AEC.

Just compare Montenegro, Portugal, Serbia, Greece with Switzerland... the same in Europe!
