  1. The Versys is great for touring, my longest trip was Pattaya up to Nong Khai, then south down the east coast of Thailand, into Malaysia at Bae tong. The east coast to near Singapore and up the west coast of both Malaysia and Thailand up to the north in to Laos and up to the Chinese border, then home.

It ran like a dream, i got a stiff knee sometimes, that's all, but i think on any bike that would happen. Only one downside, that was exploring small mountainous lanes, it was too heavy to relax and enjoy at times.

    16,000 km + of fun

    Jolly good!

    # How come you got it so cheap? Up here they were all quoting 146k by the time it had all the legalities and paperwork done.

    # Check the BKK shop and their website out Bikerz Bits - have EVERYTHING for CRF's at ridiculous prices, genuine and aftermarket.

    # Go for soft bags, buy some from the States, Rocky Mountain etc, plenty to choose from, not expensive. Top boxes and hard side cases look ridiculous on a CRF.

I looked at the Rocky Mountain bags, with shipping and tax it doubled in price!

I will look at Bikerz Bits, maybe they have some hard boxes for the Rally.

USE US$$$$  ATM's feed out $$, get $290 or something so u get smaller bills (SCB charges 100 baht /withdrawal)

FLY air asia, pay 60 baht extra and get a seat closer to the front and ur off the plane to immigration to buy ur visa

DO take a trip on the Tonle sap lake out to Kampong Phluk

This is the OFFICIAL site for visa online:  https://www.evisa.gov.kh/

    Sure,

They will let you pay in Riel, it's the national currency and they are keen to promote it.

They only thing is you are carrying large bundles of Riel and many find this inconvenient with all the 000s and prefer the simplicity of USD. Riel is generally used for small and minor purchases.

    ATMs give riel or USD.

    Thanks,

I have traveled there many times but years ago. Then as in Vietnam the dollar was favoured. Last year in Vietnam for 3 months i was only quoted a dollar price a few times.

If dollar is available from an atm that solves the issue of double changing money. :)

On the current model, the tail is just a bit of plastic, which wouldn't hold a carrier. The central section is removable, giving access to bolt holes on the frame, which would - and are there for that reason. However, that section wouldn't go back on with a carrier fitted.

    Not my photo.

According to the mechanic I spoke to, that's the only option. If there's another way, I'd be grateful to hear it.

I did not know the design had changed. But looking at the photo it looks as if if you want the cover to remain you need to drill through it and seal with a rubber washer. It seems strange to have this design default.

I would ignore what the mechanic told you and ask around, every shop will tell you something different, even if Mityon owned.

Try this shop if in Pattaya..... https://www.facebook.com/motoplus88/

Turns out that, for the PCX, you have to remove part of the "duck tail", which would look bad and let water in.  I'll stick to a rucksack.

    Thanks all.

Please explain, i have had a base plate fitted for years now, not issues at all. No removing of anything and no water leaking.

Not exactly a CRF chrissables..... but I suppose we get the picture.  as an ex CRF owner, if I was to go the side bags/boxes option Id probably go the hard plastic option that givi can provide.  Why/  because they probably offer better weather protection and ae a bit more indestructable should one 'tip' over.

Not sure of prices but if you were to look at ChiangRai Saddlebags website (Who is a sponsor of ThaiVisa) you may get an indication of price.

Ive seen some bikes with big alumimium boxes and frankly they scare me somewhat.  Sure they look good but they are hard should your leg/shin or any other part of your body come into contact with them.  they are probably quite alright...its just my opinion.

Hope youre happy with whatever you decide to go with.  as an aside I had a big Givi topbox on my CRF.  It was a godsend...fullface helmet fitted easily and was great when I went grocery shopping at makro.

    Good luck

I have a Rally as well, they fit.

I was not aware givi did hard boxes for the Rally. Trying to get info from the dealers here is hard work!

I don't need to look at the prices, Alan can, i was just answering a question.

I have a top box, and tank bag too.

I think you are mixing me up with someone who is looking against someone who has already :)

  8. Hi,

I bought these from Chiang Rai Saddlebags, they go on the Rally also, i just put some padding to reduce scratching. Don't recall the price, maybe 3500 baht. They expand also by un-zipping. Here the webbing goes under the seat, but can go over if you want.

I have a top box, difficult to get on and off with it attached!

Some years back I was taking a train back to Bangkok. i was in the 3rd class sections which had no AC only open windows. I would watch the passengers eating their lunch and then throwing the garbage out the window. At one point one of the train employees walked down the aisle collecting garbage, I thought to myself, well that is much better. When he got to the end of car, he threw it out the window. This same train also had a hole in the floor of the train for a toilet. I will never walk on the train tracks in Thailand.

The trains in the UK were like that, straight onto the track. That's why there signs saying don't flush at the station.

I have not been on a train in the UK for many years, so i don't know if upgraded.

If Thai trains did not empty onto the track, would you be more inclined to stroll along them? 55555 :)

Thanks, will try that tomorrow, it's a bit damp now. I think the Ark just went past.

Now, as to why Mutton on Pattaya Tai didn't point me that way.... TIT

I bought the Rally new at Mityon, they had no idea about the base plate.

I bought the versys second hand again they had no idea, in fact told be to find one and they would fit it! I saw the manager and got it sorted.

  11. Read this....

    https://www.thegtrider.com/touring-information-overview/s-e-asian-border-crossings

I have read that small engine bikes can't cross on the bridge at Nong Khai, but i have crossed back from Laos on the bridge on my PCX. Other crossing may be ok. Although i have heard otherwise get your green book translated, very cheap.

Vietnam you can't take a Thai register bike into. If you want to tour there fly there and rent a good quality bike. Remember in the North in the mountains it gets very cold in the winter months, now is an ideal time to travel as the rice is ripening.

    My trip last year....

Oh come on he paid in very little compared to the rest of us as he legged it overseas for a better life which ended in failure, so then you expect everyone else to pay for his problems.

fake refugees, yes there are some, but even they pay tax of one sort or another, where mark sat in the sunshine and got pissed every day and now expects the UK to support him.

So many on here knock the old country but thats where they run when the S>>> hits the fan as it will for most expats here.

My comment was in a general way, not specifically him :)

I am of the opinion that all adults should take care of themselves - irrespective of nationality.

A good-for-nothing sod is a burden on the system. There are more than enough Brits milking the system.

In the UK from your first day of work you are putting in, tax, National Insurance, VAT. If they demand so much they must pay out.

What about all the good for nothing fake refugees? It is totally wrong to put them ahead of nationals.

Ask your Accountant who does your annual returns what it is - and should they deal with it for you.

I had my one in August, i was concerned what would happen. I gave my lawyer the tax letter.

My bill from him was his fee + "specific business tax" 440 Baht. Last year 576 baht!

According to him initially they were going to tax what they considered you would pay in rent for one month. So maybe they meant one months rent (for example) 20k. Tax on the 20k rather than 20k tax.

I really don't know, saw the bill and left, maybe next year it will change.
