A series of fortunate events for the 12 kids, coach and families that Vern was there at the right time, knew who to contact and was highly knowledgeable about this cave.
Seems like a no-nonsense straight-forward chap (considering his comments about Musk).
My hats off to you Mr. Unsworth and all of Thailand thanks you for your assistance.

To my understanding Dr. Harris's father death was not sudden and he was already near the end of his life?
If so then it reflects a thousand times more how selfless Dr. Harris was to choose to help others even though he could have chosen not to and stayed by his father's side.
He chose to volunteer because he knew he could save lives.
I hope he finds solace in the fact that he helped save 13 lives and that his father is now in a better place looking down at him even prouder of him then he was before.

This is a prevalent attitude among small fry reporters and media in Thailand who often feel powerful and entitled because they think they can give bad press to anyone who crosses them as a threat/retaliation.
Me thinks someone needs to be thrown deep in the cave.

"The mission was successful because we had power, the power of love"
"Mission possible for Team Thailand"
Pathetic quotes ! It was achieved because of the skill of Team World ! It was no miracle, it was skill and bravery. If left to Thais only, the kids would all have been wearing magic amulets and left in the cave. Still a backward country that believes in ghosts, magic and voodoo. Hope they have learnt a lot from this.
Yes definitely, skills, ingenuity, experience, cooperation but more importantly will, determination and bravery.
As for the ridicule of Thai cultural superstitious beliefs, well I’m sure where your from they also believe in ghosts, the omens of walking under a ladder, opening an umbrella inside, and the numbers 13 and 666 perhaps??
If becoming cynical, grumpy, and racist is part and parcel of growing old in a foreign country then shoot me now.

I wouldn't diss anybody who did not lend a helping hand as like many had said they don't have the expertise.
As for Elon Musk, he is a cutting edge tech guy who likes to use his ingenuity to create new things and in this case the mini sub isn't that ludicrous an idea and could prove useful if one of the kids becomes ill and too weak to move.
As for the PR thing, well everything Musk does could be looked at that way, but considering his background and innovative history I'll give him the benefit of the doubt of his sincereness to try to help. Heck the guy flew all the way here himself. Didn't have to.

An incredibly selfless individual with a uncommon combination of skills being both an anesthesiologist and a diver.
These kids and the rescuers are all fortunate to have him on the team.
I'm sure Thai's all over the country appreciate all the diving and rescue volunteers who have come from many countries to help and wish them a successful rescue operation and safe return home.

A wonderful example of sheer human will, determination, cooperation, bravery and ingenuity overcoming adversity.
If only we could apply this kind of mentality in helping each other when it comes to religious and ethnic differences the world would be such a better place.
I'm hoping to hear good news soon when all 13 are safely evacuated including the rescuers.

This rescue mission is difficult no matter which angle you look at it. I for one would not dare criticize any decisions or help offered as I am not an experienced cave diver, Navy Seal or rescue specialist and have no knowledge of the cave, terrain and was never actually even there. It's always easy to judge when looking at things in retrospect.
I commend everyone offering help whether it be local or international specialists and companies like PTT and Elon Musk's The Boring company. Nobody has to help. They just want to.
All I can do is send my thoughts and prayers for a miraculous rescue mission to happen and that no more lives are lost.
It looks grim but I feel everyone is trying their best. Mother Nature can be quite cruel when challenged.

Thats a big boat. It must have been big waves to sink it. Something I dont think anyone had seen there before. With several boats swamped and in trouble it is more an untimely event than any negligence. They can only go on what they have experienced in the past.
I agree. You can forecast weather conditions to a certain degree but sudden winds are always a risk when at sea.
Passenger limits are never followed here whether it is vans, buses or boats so its always tread at your own risk which is why I avoid large group tours like the plague and prefer smaller groups. If in boats I always have a habit of staying outdoors as you never know. It’s tragic but unfortunately you read about ferries and boats sinking all around the world (like in South Korea) because you are at mother nature’s will and peril.

When traveling in foreign lands on vacation we often are distracted by the GPS and switching from right to left side driving can be quite disorientating in itself.
I have always considered driving in a foreign country to be a high risk activity due to my unfamiliarity with the roads, the driving behavior of the locals and being heavily reliant on GPS so much as to follow its instructions unerringly only for it to direct me into a one way street or turn into a road that does not exist. The best I can do is be super alert and hope my vacation ends without incident.
Its very tragic and sad as they were all just starting a family with a young child only for their lives to be cut short when they were supposed to be happily enjoying a vacation together.
RIP

If there was a flash flood the chances of survival are usually pretty slim on the other hand there is a chance they exited from somewhere else and are ok .
Unfortunately cave experts have confirmed there is only one entrance and exit for this particular cave.
The addition of an ROV and thermal imaging equipment offers better chances but it all depends on the conditions with the additional rainstorms only making it more difficult but at least if they have air with water plentiful inside, they might have a chance of surviving until rescuers can reach them.

Capital punishment can be useful as a deterrent ONLY if the perpetrators believe that there is a high probability they will be pursued, caught and the due process of law and punishment handed down accordingly.
If the police still insist on lax enforcement, cherry picking high profile cases with media coverage, judicial sentences handed down based on socio-economics and life sentences given pardons etc, focusing only on the punishment without overhauling the process will only be in vain.

A reflection that time and print space on the internet are not very valuable.
Moving on.

In Thailand there are concealed carry weapon licenses (CCW) for both military and civilians which are often issued to:
-government officials who request them on the basis of security risk duties such as mayors, tambon officials etc.
-security personnel of banks (not common as they prefer you hire off duty police personnel)
-anyone who can prove their jobs require self protection at all times.
They are rarely issued to the last group mentioned and if issued will be for one specific firearm piece valid for 1 year to be extended on a case by case basis which pretty much means you will have to pay an undisclosed sum(bribe) to have it extended unless you know someone who knows someone.

Cunning or foolish depending on how you look at if he purposely targeted a senior military man's/politician's home since it is well known they tend to keep undocumented earnings in the form of stashed cash but also have the power to hunt you down.
Must not have kept abreast of the news that those earnings have been laundered to Richard Mille's, and Audemar Piguet's.

Insurance company will still go after the money from the poor guy.
"Btw, all farangs are seen as rich so expect the same treatment except payouts/bribes are usually higher."
Usual nonsense again.
I disagree. The cost of legal fees and time it takes to take the poor guy to court is usually not worth it for the insurance companies to pursue the case.
-
It's called the thai privileged attitude and it works both ways.
If you are rich and wrong you pay/bribe your way out.
If you are poor (truck driver) and wrong and versus the rich(BMW sedan) you use the privileged "poor-get-out-of-being-responsible card."
Funny thing is the cops love to pull this "he is poor let the insurance pay for it" routine and it gets the haves frustrated and end up calling their insurance companies anyways plus the cops get away with less paperwork and becomes protector/hero of the grassroots man.
Btw, all farangs are seen as rich so expect the same treatment except payouts/bribes are usually higher.

A couple tips that you may or may not already be aware of:
Please do not drive or base your driving decisions on western perspectives.
In the west a motorcycle is perceived not much differently from a car. You are one vehicle. You take up and have the right of one car space on the road. People will not drive inches away from you. People will signal you with lights like any other car when doing lane changes etc.
In Thailand you are not one vehicle. You do not take up any space as you are perceived as a mosquito. You are ever present but cars do not acknowledge you. They will cut in or do sudden lanes changes in front of you because either they don’t see you or they think you are capable of infinite avoidance maneuvers.
They will drive as close to you as they need to pass because you take up a negligible amount of space.
So best understand this mentality and stay on the left side and do not expect anyone to take notice of your presence.
Wishing you a safe and uneventful trip!

Driving motorcycles in Thailand is a death wish in itself considering the stats of people killed on the roads here.
I would urge all tourists to avoid it like the plague.
RIP to the young couple. Sad indeed.

It's all smiles to hide the sadness and humiliation of not being able to come back home.
Anyone with a big fat bank account can get a passport and visa to visit the world.

Have been reading the debate between having self responsibility in buying travel insurance, the necessity of shipping the body back versus cremation and the use of go fund me concept in this case I came to the conclusion that everyone has valid points but then again thats normal because there clearly are no rights and wrongs here, just personal choices.
Right now the father is the one burdened with the situation with the following conditions:
He has lost his 2nd child in a far away land.
I understand he’s Christian so he would like his son buried next to his daughter probably believing at least they will be together and he can visit them.
He can’t afford the costs of bringing his son’s body back (without breaking the bank) so he turns to charity through go fund me.
Differences of opinion are common in online forums like TV (considering the mix) but shouldn’t we at least try to be civil and respectful of each other’s opinions as everyone has different experiences, different values and different ways of approaching and solving problems.
Right now people have voluntarily donated 9000GBP to this distraught father.
I hope he finds closure.

Elon Musk calls British diver in Thai cave rescue a 'pedo' in baseless attack

I felt Vern was kind of harsh with what he said to Musk about “putting it where it hurts” and it wasn’t the most gentlemanly of comments but Musk’s retort is just plain juvenile especially coming from someone who has the intellect and resources to make a difference in this world but instead is throwing childish insults because his ego is butt hurt?
What we say often reflects our character and in this case Elon Musk’s ego may be the cause of his own downfall one day.
