  1. I'd say Hua Hin would be a good choice as well, Nether been to Trang but Winnie has me intrigued..with its Chiang Mai vibe.

I guess I'll expand on that then. wink.png

    <rant>

So many cities in Thailand all look alike; the same uninspiring concrete blocks of shophouses and a couple cookie-cutter temples. When you arrive in Chiang Mai however you notice pretty early on that this is a place with history and charm, which the locals take pride in and rightly so. Now, Trang isn't anywhere as big or as old or as visually remarkable as Chiang Mai, but you do get that sense of history, and the laid back vibe from the people there. Not by coincidence Trang is the only place in the far South with a rail connection. I'm not highlighting that to suggest you go by rail, but rather that also 100 or so years ago it was a place noteworthy enough to connect by train. The city itself doesn't get many tourists, which is good because in so many places in the South (esp. Phuket, Samui and the other islands) you're a walking ATM. Trang is relatively affordable, and it's nice that not everyone you meet is trying to sell you something. And the coast is not far away and that part of the Andaman coast is completely stunning (Krabi-Trang). So Trang makes a good place to base yourself, with a couple trips along the coast and to the islands. And they got funny frog-faced tuktuks. wink.png

And the postcard stuff off the coast..

The Smoky Season is an opportunity.

You've sold me Winnie, Trang is now officially on my to do list

He got me with that also. Not sure where Trang is or if it is accessible by air.

I was wondering if it was on the beach or inland like Krabi. I found the Krabi experience to be disappointing.

I have to confess to only being in Krabi once but I did enjoy it - Trang looks fantastic - any more info Winnie?

  2. Go to Suthep road opposite side to all the Hospitals just past Wat Suan Dok there are a good few shop with lots of staff and never had a bad haircut - (in my opinion lol) during the day they are not that busy so no dicking about maybe only 10 - 15 mins for the cut!

I prefer going to a dentist than a hairdresser so this is a real recommendation

  3. What better to do on a rainy day just as the burning season for 2013-2014 gets off to a start than to clean the filters on the air conditioners!

For newcomers in Thailand, particularly in the central and northern provinces, here is a suggestion for the least expensive and effective filter material for air conditioners. Made by 3M, It is called Filtrete. In Chiang Mai, it is available at HomePro stores and probably others including the shop (if it is still there) on the SE side of Wulai Road a few hundred meters from the moat. It is known as the place where Darth Vader buys his masks. Others can provide other places that sell the material.

This material comes in bundles of two packets each. One packet will basically cover three room-sized 9 - 12 BTU units, but buy one more just to have it on hand. It is a popular item late in the season when the smoke really gets bad. Depending on the intensity of the pollution and air conditioner use over time, you probably would want to put in fresh material twice a year, perhaps at the beginning and halfway through the season.

This filter material is reviewed here: http://www.filtrete.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/FiltreteNA/Filtrete/Products/~/A-C-Filter?N=4315+3294573956+3294529207&rt=rud. For more serious filters: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HEPA. There is quite a discussion earlier on in this thread or perhaps in the general thread that preceded it covering the 2012 season. Anyway, search "HEPA" to see about air filters. You'll soon see quite a variety of room air filters available in stores, if they aren't already there.

Thank you Mapguy, I went to Big C on the superhighway yesterday (one near Index) and bought them in Homepro - they are on offer just now 2 packs for the price of 1 - 199 per pack.

They are in the lane with the toilet brushes as you would logically expect.

  4. What I find interesting is that no one wore yellow shirts to support the king 15 years ago. It wasn't until his anniversary as king in 2004? that it became popular.

I also think that it is silly for foreigners to wear yellow to support the king. I respect the king, I admire the king and even love the king, but I don't think it is all that important to wear yellow shirts. No one in my family ever wore yellow in their life so why start?

The pink shirts now are the newest trend. That is another color you will never see me in.

    Hi Zeichen,

I have to disagree with you a bit, I came here about 8 years ago and loved the fact people wore yellow on a Monday to show respect to his Majesty - I feel somewhat sad that this has been hijacked to have political meaning.

I enjoyed it when the King came out of the hospital wearing a pink jacket a few years ago, hence the trend - god bless him and I hope all the political leaders can learn from him.

  5. I went to Rimping at the Airport and bought a Silverside cut which was around 650 - 750 per kilo (many cuts available) went home and let it go in the oven for hours until it was falling apart - lovely bit of beef.

I am sure you will get a decent cut there to cook your roast

"in the oven for hours until it was falling apart"....................that shouldn't happen to good roast beef. You obviously don't know the wonders of medium rare roast beef.......maybe your British??

    We forgive you.....

Thanks for your forgiveness perhaps we can meet so you can educate me smile.png

you sound like you're self educated and never learned or experienced the many ways of cooking beef.

I suppose you are an expert on what other people should eat Jack, If I had known you were such an expert I wouldn't have dared post when you are giving us your valuable opinions

  7. This is the type of tourists we don't want. They seem to assume that all Thai women walking along Walking Street are prostitutes.

I don't consider m myself a tourist, but I'd assume that most Thai girl/women in this area are prostitutes.Or are we talking about a different walking street in another country now?

You may not consider yourself a tourist but I consider you to be an idiot. Consider what you stated, every Thai women down there is a prostitute - moronic statement.

By the way even a prostitute should not be groped without consent.

  9. Keep an eye on Pearl Oil Thailand and Pearl Energy, eadquartered at Shin Tower in Bangkok, and in Singapore. Details of their leases as at 2011 here: http://www.dmf.go.th/petroleum/concession/concessionairs2009.pdf. Probably expanded since then. Very likely more to this than meets the eye.

I forgot to add Mubadala only occupy 2 floors in the buildiing - conspiricy theory is looking weak

  10. Best idea yet, get a few colorful FAKE snakes. Move them around every few days. Works for me.

I had some Thai guys put fake snakes in our workshop to get rid of the birds and their shit and it seems to work - when at home in Chiang Mai I tried to find some in the supermarkets but couldn't - where did you get them?

Also saw a Thai girl put a monkey (toy) inside room at the glass balcony door and it worked as well.

  11. ''but just advise them to stay away from the areas where protests are held as there was possibility that large scale protest could break out.''

    Yes indeed. People be warned....

These protests bring a lot of people together in the same place...

Lots of body heat there in addition to the hot weather....darn it.

Difficult already to try to keep the beer cold...

    Stay home...

And to say that my home country is part of that... Well. beer easily keeps very cold in my country....whistling.gif

. Does anyone know if there are protesters near Australian consulate as I have to go there tomorrow or Friday

They will be there waiting on you better wear a pink shirt

Houses from “Elite Properties” and “Raintree” is a little bit over my budget. But thank for that. smile.png

I think, finding house on my own would be good if it´s work. But I think I always have to pay the “Farang Price”, not same like thai peoples would paysad.png . I also cannot send my wife to talk with the owner because she don´t have experience with that.facepalm.gif

“Karnkanok” looks nice but everything is in thai language. So, not that easy to understand.blink.png
