  1. PTT Global Chemical may only have to pay about Bt200 million - a relatively small compensation amount - for all damage caused by the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Thailand off Rayong, an economic expert has said.

This figure is based on an international rate that companies that cause an oil spill must pay - of US$1,200 (about Bt37,500) per litre - as compensation for all damage, according to Adis Israngkura na Ayudhaya, of the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA).

Something not right here. The international rate is $1200 per litre. We are told only 50000 litres escaped (even thought it was probably much more). But doing the math, I get a figure of ($1200x50000 = $60 million == 1800 million baht (@30B/$)).

So how do they get only 200 million baht? The kingdom's gross national income per capita should be irrelevant and not factor into the compensation as the $1200 per litre is the international rate.

Something well and truely stinks here.

    yes the beach stinks

  2. I thought I'd read a story about someone else doing this recently? Anyway it's beyond belief how much belief put into all this voodoo and fortune telling crap here.

I know of someone who knocked back a successful business yesterday because a fortune teller told then that the spirit that controlled the land wasn't happy.

    Seriously.

Why is this any more unbelievable as Christianity or any other religion ?

No proof for any of then. I do hope its against the law to have dead babies. Who knows they might have been killed for this.

  3. Thanks guys, very much appreciated. Me thinks me will be setting up a separate account & contributing monthly.

    Cheers..... Malt.

You could also consider taking out insurance with a large excess - whatever suits you. Perhaps you may be happy for a minor problem to pay 200K Baht - 300K etc so take that as an excess.

small medical issues that can be dealt with without Hospitals and in many cases with Hospitals are not very expensive

  4. To be honest - I do not really think this should be in the News at this point. I am making no comment on whether or not this guy is guilty or innocent because I have no information apart from the Police accusation reported. I believe a proper investigation should be carried out and if there are grounds he goes to court and if found guilty - punish him properly and report it in the News.

  5. Isn't this 2 derailments on the same line in 2 weeks? I think the line needs to be closed indefinitely for public safety until a full and thorough inspection of the tracks have been completed. Forget about the tourist money for a moment and put safety first. Strike 3 might be disastrous.

Yes unfortunately, last one on the 17th July and it was a bit more serious.

  6. What is it with the food? Shockingly bad ingredients? Shockingly bad cooks?

    From my post above ...

"Well, if you like a countries cuisine largely influenced by the USA, then you might find it palatable."

    .

    Cuisines influenced by the USA?

Think it's the other way around, bud.

    au contraire mon frère ...

In the States, Americans have influences from around the world with their cuisine.

But in the Phillipines there is a strong and obvious influence from America.

Given the decades that the USA ran the admin of the country ... that is only natural.

These are but my experiences from visiting there ... what are yours?

    .

I have to agree about the food, I have only spent 3 holidays in the Philippines so am no expert (Puerto Galera) I enjoyed each time but had limited food options. On the drive from Manilla to the ferry in Batangas all you pass are fast food places - seriously dozens of them, Mccdonalds, KFC, Jollibies etc.etc.etc. We were going diving there and it is fantastic but always glad to come back to Thailand for the food and infrastructure.

  7. I don't know about investment but where oh where are all the people going to come from to fill all of the houses being built? There are huge housing developments everywhere.

Sure the Thais prefer new houses to old houses but still I do not see massive areas of older houses being demolished.

Someone is investing in this area and investing in a big way.

Not only where are they going to come from but what are they going to do if they have to work?

Short of online work there is not that much open other than low paying jobs that can not afford the new construction.

It is funny before I moved here Hua Hin was in my thoughts. A friend told me get a place there and then go to Chiang Mai for furniture. I wound up living here in furnished accommodations. But they did not have the chair I wanted for my TV viewing so I went out and looked at about three or four places before settling on one that met my qualifications.

They had to ship it up from Bangkok.smile.png

Perhaps they can work in the various Hospitals, Universities, Colleges, Schools, manufacturing plants, Government positions, etc. etc - plenty opportunities around for educated people.

  8. Delays at checkin counters occur because there are issues that have to be sorted out that the agent has trouble dealing with;

    1. IT systems are slow or malfunctioning

    2. Connections to other airlines have to be keyed in and the agent can't get it worked out

    3. There is a flight problem on the route and the agent has to reroute or modify the itinerary

    4. There are additional changes to make such as charging for excess luggage or an upgrade

    5. People have buggered up their ticket or want to make a change.

    6. The agent is inefficient.

    Or your flying Thai airlines

  9. The boats leave from Taksin pier (Taksin BTS). I think it is still around 16B to get to Nontaburi. It is not a day ticket! Every time you get on the boat you have to pay so.. If you get on 8 times!

I did this last month, went up and took a look at the other "Bangkok Hilton" the cruise took about an hour each way and was great but very expensive at 15 Baht each way :0

  10. There used to be a LOT of Tai Chi going on in the mornings, in various areas. One was the park in the S.W. corner of the Old City. I don't know if they are still active.

This is still going on every morning from about 6am till 7am - I do not participate but enjoy the music and elegant movement. There appears to be 2 different groups both quite large - I would suggest going down for a walk one morning and chatting to them - there are farangs in the group.
