Well, there's a trade-off.
Imbibe to moderation and be amiable company in a bar or stop drinking altogether and become an annoying prig on TV. All about priorities and to each his own.

Annoying prig! Of all the nerve. Suggest you and the OP read the above article.

Here is a thought you might consider. Instead of looking for a place to purchase alcohol why don't you look for a way to stop drinking alcoholic beverages then you wont have that problem and it will be much better for your health!

What is a TM 30 declaration?

"... “Every six weeks, I’d fork out about $250 for a cut, colour and blow-dry. ..."
Back in the day, I could get a BJ and a lay for 90 Baht in Bangkok. That included the room. 150 Baht at current exchange rates. I got a Thai wife who would cut my hair whenever needed at less than $250/6 weeks. Hell, the house and utilities were about 2,000 Baht a month.
Which day was that? I have been here since 1967 and I don't recall things as cheap as mentioned in your post.

I am not trying to get in a argument with you over FBAR. What am I missing?
Edit: Disregard. After reading the rest of the post I see I am not missing anything. As far as an IRS audit I could care less as my taxes are correctly filed each year.

Thank you -- I don't have $25K in cash sitting in a bank anywhere and if I did I certainly would not want it to be in Thailand.
Also, I am well insured and don't need cash for a medical emergency here in Thailand. I also have the no-credit-limit American Express card which is accepted at (most) all major hospitals here in Thailand -- don't leave home without it!
And as a US citizen $25K in a non-US bank account puts you on FBAR territory which is to be avoided if at all possible.
Why should FBAR territory be avoided if at all possible? It takes me about 5 minutes to file on line. Am I missing something?

I think the best solution is to have B800,000 in the bank then everyone is happy and you save $50 US embassy fee although I think the banks charge a fee for their letter too.

You can get a decent room at the Chiang Mai Gate Hotel for around B900. They have a nice pool and a pretty good buffet breakfast is included. Google the hotel for details, Wife and I have stayed there many times.

When we depart Thailand on 7 Sept. her passport will be valid until 6 March 2019, about 6 months. So she wont have any problem entering the USA?
-
My Thai wife and I will be visiting the USA on 7 September and returning on 28 October 2018. Her Thai passport expires on 6 March 2019. Will she need a new passport for this trip?

Well if you ever get to Lampang then try the pizza at Long Jim New York Pizza and you will see what the best pizza in Thailand is like. Or if you go further north to Chiang Mai stop by The Dukes for the second best pizza in Thailand.

We own our home and both cars are paid for. When you figure in both health insurance for wife and myself, auto insurance for 2 cars and all the other living expenses it cost us around B 75,000 a month. We don't try to live "cheap" but we don't piss money away either.

Grottino soi 33 naklua
It has been going for 12 years or so, Italian owner, at least 1 if not 2 Italian chefs.
Wood fired oven.
Has both inside air con area ( large ) and some tables outside which fill out quickly
Also other Italian dishes available.
I have been going there for years.
Pizza prices, from 200 to 380.
Never had a bad meal there. Always good to excellent, very consistent.
Current opening hours 3.00 PM to 12.30 AM. I don`t think they are interested in any lunch time trade
Service and food way above average.
Drinks prices are also a little above average.
It beats Pizza Big by a long shot IMO.
Do you know if they have parking or is it what you can find on the street?

Oh, yea?
Howouldya like if FBI started enforcing prostitution laws in Thailand on their American citizens? You'd be on first on their list for a lifetime achievement award.
I think that would be a great idea.

I thought I found one but I was mistaken. Nice ladies are, in my experience, only nice till they think they've got one hooked, so nice ladies are available, but not on a permanent basis.
Not true. My wife and I have been together for 30 years and she is just as nice now as she was when l met in 1987.

Just remember Love in Thailand is measured in Bath's of gold. The more gold the more love no gold no love, very easy and do not confuse it with emotions.
Maybe that was your own personal experience but certainly wasn't mine.

Stock up, stay home... sorted!
Yes, for sure stock up! I would hate to not have any alcoholic beverages on hand and no place to purchase any. What could possibly be worse?

Hi, I am quite interested in this topic and want to thank Moonseeker for the link with basic and clear information on the issue >
https://www.samuiforsale.com/family-law/forms-of-wills-under-thai-law.html
Many people refrain from making a will because they incorrectly assume it will involve lawyers/notaries and a lot of admin hassle.
But in reality you can simply manually write out the will yourself, date and sign it and ask 2 friends or people you trust to sign too (these cannot be beneficiaries to what is stipulated in the will, so your wife and son are 'ruled out').
Note: You can make up this will in two or three-fold and provide the 2 friends with one of these originals, mentioning in the text of the will that you did so.
Easy, completely legal and at no cost.
But does it also have to be translated into Thai?

Lets say you have $1,000 a month income so you get the letter from your embassy so you will still need to put approximately B 400,000 in a Thai bank. Must that B 400,000 be in the bank for 90 days before going for the visa renewal?
Another change for U.S. Citizens.

What rate are you using? At 32.6, roughly todays rate, that would be B 32,600.
